Las Casas Paper Imagine a world where everything you read is written in the same manner; same purpose, same sentence structure, same language etc. Readers would become bored because writing would be predictable. This is why writing is unique. All writing has a purpose whether that be to entertain, inform or persuade. Writers use different forms of artistry to convey their message to audiences. Artistry can be either positive or negative depending on how it is used, and if it is justified. Bartolomé de Las Casas was a 16th century Spanish priest who wrote about the Spanish colonization of the West Indies. A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies is a letter written to the prince of Spain

In his prologue to Prince Philip, Las Casas says, "kingdoms granted and entrusted by God and His Church to the Spanish Crown so that they might be properly ruled and governed to the Faith, and tenderly nurtured to full material and spiritual prosperity" (De Las Casas 6). Las Casas is referring back to the Bulls of Donation of 1493, which states God gave the New World to the Spanish so they could spread Christianity. The words of God cannot be used as a credible source. Therefore, it is difficult to prove a point when using biblical references, because religion is based on …show more content…
He is a Catholic priest writing to the Catholic Prince of Spain. Las Casas ends the prologue by saying, "This, Your Royal Highness, is a matter on which action is both urgent and necessary if God is to continue to watch over the Crown of Catile and ensure its future well-being and prosperity, both spiritual and temporal. Amen" (De Las Casas 8). By making the prologue sound like a prayer and including God, Las Casas tries to appeal his argument to the prince. Therefore, it does not matter that Las Casas uses biblical references, because he is trying to persuade Prince Phillip and not a larger audience. On the other hand, Las Casas is not writing a history book. He does not need to prove his facts with credible sources, because A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies is his perception of the killings of natives. "The way they normally dealt with the native leaders and nobles was to tie them to a kind of griddle consisting of sticks resting on pitchforks driven into the ground and then grill them over a slow fire, with the result that they howled in agony and despair as they died a lingering death" (De Las Casas 15). Even though the way the killings were described can not be proven, Las Casas wanted to portray the feeling in which he felt during that time. In this situation, readers get a better understanding of the atmosphere than if it was written exactly how it
Bartolome de Las Casas was born in 1848 in Spain. Las Casas was a Spanish historian and dominican missionary who objected the Spanish treatment of the Natives. Las Casas is known for his famous writings which weren’t published until many years after his death. Las Casas was not like any ordinary man in his time period. He opposed to several things the Spanish had against the Natives.
Throughout the times Cabeza de Vaca’s exploring the new world, religion has developed better known, especially for the Roman Catholics during the mid 15 th cetury. Since it was the uprising religion, Cabeza de Vaca knew that he will be able to teach other about the words of God but also he can use the advantage to hold the power of a conquistador. First, Cabeza de Vaca realized that he was alone in this trip and the only person he has to rely on was himself and God so he needed to have some type of “tool” that will benefit him to get by throughout his trip. By doing so, Cabeza de Vaca knows that God will always be by his side through hardships and surviving, “There we found a large amount
The treatment of the native inhabitants varied among the three explorers. The worst treatment of the natives was seen in great detail through the perspective of De Las Casas. During his expedition in the Indies, he and his comrades killed millions of the natives to take everything and anything they wanted. He stated, “And thus they have deprived the Indians of their lives and souls, for the millions I mentioned have died without the Faith and without the benefit of the sacraments. This is a well-known and proven fact which even the tyrant Governors, themselves killers, know and admit.
Why do authors write? A seemingly simple question, but the answer would vary from person to person. Some may say it is to engage readers in epic tales, others may say books are outlets for expression. For authors like Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury, books are a brilliant way to convey ideas. They toy with elements of storytelling to present entertainment that has depth.
The Catholic Church and Latin America The Catholic Church was a great power ruling many civilizations in Europe during the period between 1492 and 1830. Therefore, the role of the Catholic Church was of utmost importance to the colonization and development of Latin America as it was a great force in Spain and Portugal. Despite the peaceful teachings of the Church, greed and a hunger for power led them to make decisions harming Latin America and Christianity, rather than thriving it. In this paper, I will show that the Catholic Church is significantly responsible for the colonization and development of Latin America through, the Christianizing mission, the Treaty of Tordesillas, and the Spanish Inquisition.
In the novella Lazaro de Tormes, Lazarillo reviews his biography for his excellency Vuestra Merced and depicts the rising of his social status while remaining in a fraudulent and pessimistic culture. He learns life lessons and bears various challenges while he serves eight masters all through the story. During the memory of his biography, Lazaro does not see religion a major factor in his life contrary to most people during the 16th century. By serving under the tutelage of numerous religious figures, he saw a plenitude of sins by men of religious positions. Religious masters who ranked high in social religious standing also ranked high their wrongdoings.
Adam Choquette Period 7 Mr. Coulter Honors English II March 3, 2016 Breaking Man’s Chains In the last chapter of Anthem, Equality reflects, “The best in me had been my sins and my transgressions”(98). He no longer holds the belief that society is simply ‘misguided’ or that they are ‘forgiving’. Instead, Prometheus embraces individuality, rejecting the concept that, “We are all in all and all in one” held by his former society (19). “I am done with this creed of corruption,” Equality declares, no longer willing to slave for his brothers (97).
Las Casas was a historian who later became a Bishop. He believed that the Indians shouldn't just be conquered but should have a chance of fighting the Europeans first. He traveled to North America in 1550. When Las Casas first came to the New World, he noticed that even though the Indians lacked art and writing, they had the the capacity to rule(pg.9). The Indians had kingdoms, cities and communities that were governed well and wisely because they followed the laws and customs of the Indians(pg.9).
Writers do their job because they want to express their ideas to make an impact on the readers. Sometimes they want to convince their audience through persuasion. They can do it using different rhetorical elements such as logos, ethos, and pathos. These are Greek words that mean logic, character, and emotion consecutively.
Before the Spanish ship that changed it all, which arrived in the “New World” in 1492, thriving organized communities of native people had centuries of history on the land. That ship, skippered by Christopher Columbus, altered the course of both Native American and European history. 1492 sparked the fire of cultural diffusion in the New World which profoundly impacted the Native American peoples and the European settlers. Prior to European contact, Native Americans lived as hunter-gatherers, living and traveling in groups of typically less than 300 people. These Native Americans spoke over 400 languages and practiced a myriad of different religions (The American Pageant).
Literature is never written – or read – for entertainment alone. There is always another purpose. Discuss in relation to two books Reading a book can be entertaining; that does not mean however, that the book is written for entertainment alone. At least one alternative purpose always exists.
Mexican society tends to be religious, that is why the elements of Catholicism can be observed in many areas of Mexican’s life. This essay will investigate the Christian motives in Mexican literature, namely, the novel by Juan Rulfo “Pedro Paramo”. In this paper I will argue that the novel “Pedro Paramo” shows a typical view of Mexican Catholicism by focusing on Mexican beliefs of purgatory and ghosts, its role and image in the novel. Investigating its influence on plot and characters and making a comparison with The Bible and Catholic Doctrine of Purgatory’s description of these terms are crucial parts of the essay. Latin American society is strictly Catholic due to historical reasons of being colonies of Catholic Spain and Portugal, therefore the influence of Catholic Church is very sensible, especially in literature.
The missionaries want to convey their religious beliefs on the pagan settlers they seek to convert. The language that characterized this interaction, including converting Spanish words related to religion into Tagalog words to facilitate not just conversion but subservience to religious leaders who are instrumental in the political subjugation of the conquered people. A key point in the book is the seemingly ironic turn of events. The missionaries were too intent on translating the religious texts and words so that they can allow the natives the opportunity to assimilate with the Spaniards (in faith, at least). They were successful in converting natives and many become devout Christians.
Literary devices are what makes up any work. Every author has to incorporate their style into their work so that they can give the reader an idea on how to feel. It is manipulation actually, they use positive and negative reinforcement in their words to affect the readers judgement. In The Inferno by Dante Alighieri uses symbolism and diction to help the reader comprehend his work.
The above definitions subtly bring us closer to the importance of creative writing as it denotes human experiences throughout the ages, enabling us to cross geographical and cultural barriers. It illustrates what is common and shared among different peoples and cultures. It also enriches our human conscience by encouraging feelings of empathy and kindness. In short, I strongly believe creative writing is the essence of being human. In addition, creative writing has long been a form of refined entertainment and fun, for both writers and readers.
