The American dream, a promise of prosperity in exchange for an honest day's work. This revered land, attracting idealists with hope and opportunity; a haven from persecution and impoverishment. Violations of human integrity have been an insidious truth surrounding immigrants; often their own naivety used as ammunition to rob the ambitions they once held so closely. In 1970 there was an estimated 9.6 million immigrants in the United States. Forty-three years later in 2013 that number spiked to a whopping 41.3 million immigrants . However, these statistics do not tell the story of immigration. People do.

The Amnesty International report, "Jailed Without Justice: Immigration Detention in the USA," noted a variety of concerns over due process and the conditions of detention; one being people in immigration custody don't have the same guarantees as criminal detainees to challenge their detention before a court, make a phone call or obtain legal representation. Or detainees can be transferred from one facility to another, sometimes in another state, with no notice given to their families or attorneys. Two-thirds of people in federal immigration custody are housed in state or county detention facilities, usually alongside criminal detainees, even though violations of immigration law are considered administrative, not criminal, and asylum seekers have committed no violation. Immigrants are subject to excessive use of restraints such as handcuffs, waist chains and leg restraints . Myriads of people face adversity due to the necessity to provide for their families. The continuance to treat immigrants less as fellow human beings and more as parasites will divide America from the rest of the …show more content…
When Jurgis came to America after his friend Jokubus told him that hard work and success pay off in the end. Jurgis realizes this is not the truth in Chapter 2 . Another example being when Jurgis and Ona are looking into purchasing a beautiful house. The realtor lies, telling them the houses sell fast and they need to buy as soon as possible. And, of course, to the immigrants who make up 13 percent of the US population, it is a place where they were given a chance to live the dream. The American Dream. The dream composed of ideals which make America the great country it is today: democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity, and equality. The ideals rooted into our nation’s soul because like James Truslow Adams said in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth”.
Every person has a story. A story that is more complex than what we believe to be. A story that does not only have a beginning, middle, and end but as well has obstacles, achievements, and characters that have to face everything that life throws at them. However, some people are quick to judge and stereotype people based on their appearance and their diminutive amount of knowledge rather than listening. If people listened, they would understand the history and lives of the immigrants that call the United States their home.
The American Dream was what immigrants thought that America was all about by either hearing stories or just heard about it. Sadly, for them the American Dream was just a dream, The pavement was not paved in gold, and they thought everyone was a nice. More importantly they thought it meant that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success through
There are a lot of controversies when it comes to the topic of immigration. Specifically illegal immigration. However, I rarely ever hear anyone talk about the different treatment certain ethnic groups get compared to others. For instance, Latin American immigrants are far more discriminated against in comparison to any other immigrant group. When it comes to Latino Immigrants, they are often considered unwanted and are seen as a threat to American society, which leads to discrimination and negative treatment.
Mexico, a country known for its rich culture, delicious food, live music, exciting dance and beautiful language, offers many world-famous tourist destinations such as Punta Cana, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta. Despite Mexico's cultural identity, the circumstances of Mexican immigrants in the United States have become a controversy, often portrayed in a negative light as drug traffickers who allegedly steal jobs from American citizens. According to It is a common misconception that these immigrants are taking away the jobs that Americans compete for, when in fact they are usually difficult, stressful jobs that most Americans do not do, doing hard manual labor for little pay. This trend has continued since the early 20th century, when Mexican immigrants

Unfortunately, for some, it could mean wealth, status,or power whereas for others it could mean companionship, good morals, love, and amity. According to our Declaration of Independence, it entitles every man and woman the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The American Dream is something all immigrants dream of achieving when arriving to the United States. But what exactly is the
Immigration has always been a major part of American history. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people travel to the United States in search of a better life. Of the 1.49 million immigrants who traveled to the United States in 2016, 150,400 immigrants were from Mexico. There have also been many people from Mexico who have immigrated illegally to America, with 5.6 million Mexican unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2015 and 2016. The large scale of immigration, both legal and illegal, has brought up issues such as national security and the U.S. economy.
Every individual has their own perspective in a Latino due to how they are viewed by others. Most stereotypes come from social media and largely by the famous latinos which has a big impact on how various mistake the overall view of Latinos. Plenty of Latinos are American citizens who actually become successful. All Latinos are different in many ways for example, not all look alike, some do not even speak spanish, many are accused of selling drugs, and Latinos do not always party every weekend.

Stereotypes often lead to prejudice, meaning that one acts a certain way due to the fixed beliefs they have toward a certain group of individuals.
citizen, but unlike U.S. citizens, migrants must suffer from being placed in detention. The issue being raised here is that even though there are many aspects that merge the two together, there can be an overlap at times that has negative impacts. In criminal law, defendants have multiple rights that they are entitled to, but this isn’t the case for migrants. Migrants that are being held in detention awaiting their trials must defend themselves because, even though they are being treated as criminals, the rights of a criminal don’t pass over to them. The article written on crimmigration conveys that “Noncitizens in immigration proceedings do not enjoy the protections of the Eighth Amendment against cruel and unusual punishment.
The American Dream is an opportunity in which a determined person can have exceptional success through dedication and hard work, achieving equality, freedom, and personal goals. As immigrants, my grandparents followed this beacon of hope, and had this one thing in mind: a better life. Coming from
Other common stereotypes that have been used negatively to describe Native Americans are the following ones: All Indigenous people are alcoholics; Native Americans are lazy or all Native Americans live in reservations; just a few to mention. Native Americans have also been seen as “nomads”. The reason of this perception is, some of the Euro-Americans believed that Indians wandered aimlessly as hunters and gatherers. The consequence of this perception, was that Europeans occupied the space with the excuse of Indians did not used the lands for any productive purpose. But what people does not know is the following “All Indians, even the Labrador hunters, the tribes of the Buffalo-covered plains, and the Eskimos, lived in villages.
No matter who you are or where you have come from, you have undoubtedly heard of the American Dream. The idea that no matter who you are or where you have come from, you can do whatever it is you desire in America. What was once one the main driving forces for immigrants to flock to the new world, has slowly changed over the years, but still holds its value in the eyes of those who are looking for a promising new place to live. The American dream might not hold the same awe inspiring sound that it once did, but for many generations before ours it was a beacon of hope that helped build the foundation that the United States was built on. And, still, today the American dream might not be as achievable as it once was, but it is still an important
