Industrialization itself brought along many things both positive and negative, some of which are still affecting us as a society today. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of the harm it did to people of that time, it was actually a positive thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were economic prosperity, Efficient, serviceable inventions, and more, and better jobs. The Industrial Revolution was the urbanization of rural areas, and the development of factories and machines. These transformations allowed economic prosperity and brought along tremendous plusses, and were still seeing the success in these up-comings today. “…Industrial Revolution spread to the …show more content…
“You are surrounded ….. With an infinite number of comforts and conveniences which had no existence two or three centuries ago …. Are not only used by a few, but are within the reach of almost all men” (Document 9). During this time period in the early 1830s people had the conveniences of better, safer homes, cheaper merchandise, and a countless number of other domestic utensils. Although these might not have an immense effect on the economy, they did in-fact better living conditions and the qualities of life. One major, still active, and still extremely important example of a big factor to bettering the lives of everyday people was the construction of the railroads. An American traveler said “Railroad travel was fast. Going to San Francisco from New York City took only six day, before the railroads, the trip took months” (Document 5). The invention of the railroads all started in 1705 when Thomas Newcomen invented the first steam engine. Later on in the 1730s Scottish engineer James Watt, made improvements and innovations to the steam engine that led to its wide use in industry. “You can travel cheaply from place to place, and not only travel at less expense, but travel ten times quicker…” (Document 9). The availability of faster travel via; trains and ships, opened up new doors for agricultural …show more content…
Another big contribution to having abundant amount of job opportunities was urbanization. Small farms became corporations and people had no choice other than to move to the cities in search for employment. “Mary Paul worked in a textile factory in Lowell, Massachusetts. In an 1846 letter to her father …. The 16 year old expressed her satisfaction with her situation at Lowell” (Document 1). Mary Paul was from New Hampshire, and she traveled around the country looking for employment, she then finds a job working in a spinning room where she is very content with her living conditions. In the letter to her father she even says she would recommend any girls that want employment, to come to Lowell, and that she thinks that’s the best place for her. “I have a very good boarding place, have enough to eat … The girls are all kind and obliging” (Document 1). In this piece, the teen girl talks about the living conditions at her place of employment, her boarding area, and co-workers. She doesn’t seem to have any complaints or negative statements about where she resides, she is fed, and well taken care of. “Five people, each specializing in one of the five steps, can make ten units in the same time” (Document 4). In the late 1800s an inventor name Henry Ford, developed the first successful assembly line, in which he had five men doing the work of
During Industrialization, many big changes occurred. One major point is that products and goods became cheaper to make, and in return, cheaper for sale. Shortly after factories starting popping up in the U.S., “the production of exports outpaced import of goods, and by the late 1800s America emerged as the world’s largest industrial power” (Doc 3). Before factories, things were made by hand and took time to make. Because of the amount of time it took to produce products, people needed to sell these products at higher prices to make the business worth something.
One positive attribute that came from Industrialization was that it provided better financial opportunities. Masses of different types of mills and factories started to show up like Flax Mills and Cotton Factories. These factories had many demands such as workers. Most of them had bad effects such as health conditions, but there were many other factories, such as the textile factory in Document 3 where it was stated that “Soon the production of exports outpaced the import of goods” (Document 3). This made most companies in England very wealthy compared to other countries like France because they could sell more than they bought.
Although the industrial revolution had positive impacts such as helping the economy, it led many places to illiteracy, loss of life, and an increase in crime rate. There were many great effects of the Industrial Revolution, which helped Great Britain's economy grow more efficiently. Firstly, Great Britain was the first country to industrialize, meaning they had cheaper goods which other countries at the time were in need of leading Great Britain to mass trading. Secondly, when they made factories, they required people to work in these factories, leading to growth in the employment rate. Lastly, document 4 states that industrialization made “not only travel at less expense but travels ten times quicker than two hundred years ago”.
Second, people took on factory jobs for the money. Many people realized that their lives would be better in taking these higher paying jobs. For many, this was a tremendous gift that words couldn't begin to describe. To summarize, the people that moved to the cities were job
We also took them on many field trips- to Branch Creek Farm, for example, to see where food really comes from; to eat meals at African American-owned restaurants that were part of our sister restaurant program, to learn from successful businesspeople in their neighborhoods; and sometimes, just for fun, to go ice skating, on a picnic, or to a movie”. (Wicks, 149) Taking good care of high school students in local community isn’t a move that normal businesspeople would do. Judy was trying to develop this community, and make relationship with the people in this community. That is her way of doing business in a
By 1780’s, the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain began to further accelerate as machinery advancements allowed factories and businesses to produce more at a cheaper and faster rate. Cites such as Manchester, were greatly affected and became vast areas constructed of canals, railroads, and areas of development. Poor living and working conditions along side a dismal city were issues caused by the industrial growth of Manchester; as the course of the 19th century continued reforms were imposed to resolve these issues. Fast and cheap production produced extensive work hours for labors with quite the atrocious atmosphere. “If you visit a factory, it is easy to see that the comfort and welfare of the workers have never entered the builder's
Arguably fueled by the economic necessity of many women, the Industrial Revolution was an episode in history which can be credited for the recognition of modern cities today. Though the Industrial Revolution ushered in an era of innovative machinery, increased work production, and a society which was more interconnected than ever, the Industrial Revolution for the most part, had very limited benefits on the lives of women. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, mass-production factories were singular. However, in the late eighteenth century, a period of major industrialization blossomed, resulting in the mechanization of agriculture, textile manufacturing, and a revolution in transportation. The factory systems developed during this time period
The industrial revolution caused a massive influx of farm workers into urban cities, their farms having been modernized by the seed drill, they came looking for work. mainly unskilled and semi-skilled labor like the textile industry or coal mining industry. After, workers began to demand a higher working condition and higher living condition. People began advocating government reform on things like work hours and child labor, forming things like unions. Some supporters of more radical ideas advocated gender equality and electoral equality, saying that was vital to better life in the working class.
This creation was powered by steam engines that could travel long distances in a short period of time on their own across the country. Trains and railroads reshaped life in America by encouraging rapid immigration and travel, paving the way for western modernization and settlement, and economically growing cities
The Industrial Revolution witnessed the evolution of large urban centers, such as Boston and New York City. It changed society from agrarian to mechanical, which further moved jobs to larger cities. As every coin has two sides, there are negative sides to this. Primarily, it caused severe pollution. The environment condition was bad with smokes surrounding them.
In the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution had significant influence worldwide, causing countries to compete against each other for industrial power. The British were the first to be heavily involved in industrialization, making huge technological advancements, which made them superior in strength compared to other countries. They made use of this advantage and sought to increase their power all around the world. Japan and India’s path to industrialization were caused by Britain’s influences. Japan was forced to open its trade ports to the Western powers in the mid-19th century, and India was colonized by Britain, which made them subject to factory work and exploitation.
The industrialization of Great Britain led the world to modern technology because of all of their ample amount of natural resources and political stability. With multiple entrepreneurs looking for new factories and capital to invest in those factories, they continued to show the world they were the leaders in urbanization at that time. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of modernized machines, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were child labor, separated families, and bad quality of life.
She resists conforming to societal norms and wants to live a free spirited life with no requirements. Moreover, Mary is unwilling to follow through with her priorities and is upset about
The Industrial Revolution had a big impact in the United States. Some of impacts benefited the society, while the others harm the society. An example would be, the railroad. It had contributed many advantages; as a result this dramatically affected the economic, cultural and social lives of the people in the United States. Economically speaking, the railroad’s advantages included more directed routes, faster speed, safety, and comfort than other ways of land travel.
One very massive achievement with the steamboat was that it could go up rivers with ease and it did not rely on wind power. Travel to Pittsburgh from New Orleans was cut down from five weeks to two. In doing so people and goods could be shipped faster. In closing, shipbuilding was very important for the development of travel in the
