Most ninth graders do not want to draw attention to themselves at school. This is why I even surprised myself that my freshman year I ran for treasurer of Key Club. Being Treasurer would not only mean that I was in charge of the money, but also that I would have to stand in front of an auditorium full of students and talk to them about upcoming events and dates. Just a few years earlier, I never would have had the courage to do this. I have come so far from who I used to be and it is all because of performing. Singing has been my passion ever since I was a little kid. However, when I was younger, I was always shy and never wanted to let anyone hear me sing. After school, I would spend countless hours in my bedroom belting “Part of Your World” to my stuffed animals, but I refused to let anyone, even just my parents, hear my performance. After overhearing me singing, my mom encouraged me to get involved in musical theater. Just the thought of getting up in front of anyone terrified me. One day, my theater group was holding auditions for the Ugly Duckling. When I walked on stage in front of the judges, my heart was pounding in my ears and my hands were trembling. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and delivered the monologue I had prepared. When I was finished, I felt instant relief, although I was not very optimistic about getting the part I had tried out for. However, the next week, when I came to my theater group, I looked up at the audition board and was shocked. I had been given the lead role; The Ugly Duckling.
