The Mac vs PC adds developed in 2006 were a four year add campaign introduced by Apple to address the common issue that the average consumer faces. Which is better, Mac or PC? The answer, you guessed it, Mac. These adds are filled with rhetoric that ‘brainwash’ the viewer into considering an Apple computer over a PC and in many cases it was the most successful that they’ve ever had. The rhetorical devices were key, in the add there is a major build on ethos, pathos and logos using facts and celebrities to really persuade the viewer. Firstly as a play on logic the apple adds work to exploit the faults on a PC (represented by John Hodgman), each add has a different play on a different problem and each time Mac (played by Justin Long) comes with the solution proving mac is better over and over again. For example, one of the adds …show more content…
Its a decision that Apple has already made for the average consumer with their Mac vs PC ads using their plays on logos. Although the adds are mainly logic based, other rhetoric like ethos and pathos are widely shown. The advertisements support their argument using pathos with visuals that relate the consumer with the Mac more than the PC. To accomplish this, they use a contrast of visuals between the Mac and the PC, for the actors they use a young, laid back actor with a casual outfit (jeans, t-shirt and a hoodie) like Justin Long to play Mac and an older, less attractive actor wearing a suit to play PC, instantly bringing the viewer’s attention to Mac. In many adds they have other actors and actresses play roles in the commercial, Mac usually has female friends while PC only have men. Again this is another play on pathos because the large male population using a PC are attracted to these beautiful women, building
You've likely seen celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels putting people through rigorous workouts to lose weight but when it comes to shedding pounds, Michaels says diet is more important than exercise. In fact, she says it's critical. "You can eat your way through any amount of exercise. There are those great little factoids online that put this in perspective. For example, 1 small fries is equivalent to 30 minutes on the treadmill.
Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
In “What We Are to Advertisers” and “Men’s Men and Women’s Women” both Twitchell and Craig reveal how advertisers utilize stereotypes to manipulate and persuade consumers into purchasing their products. Companies label their audience and advertise to them accordingly. Using reliable sources such as Stanford Research Institute, companies are able to use the data to their advantage to help market their products to a specific demographic. Craig and Twitchell give examples of this ploy in action by revealing how companies use “positioning” to advertise the same product to two demographics to earn more profit. Craig delves more into the advertisers ' plan by exposing the science behind commercials.
For my final project of the semester, Project 4, I decided to revise my rhetorical analysis of project 2. I took your comments and feedback very solemnly, to avail further my inditement. I understood the feedback consummately, and optically discerned precisely what I needed to do. The main thing I wanted to fixate on was understanding that the paper was filled with many conceptions, and constructing it down to precise conceptions, and expounding them exhaustively. I abstracted some conceptions that I believe that weren’t apart of the process of explicating the argument or how it works.

A major theme in A&P is personal freedom. Throughout the story Updike uses metaphor for all elements in the story to implies the theme. At the beginning of the story, Sammy uses sarcastic tone to describe the customers as “sheep” and “houseslaves” which implies he is different from them in mindset. The way how Sammy talks about others shows his intellectual mind. He is not same as Stokesie who wants to be a manager one day.
In all the ads three things have remained constant: ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is basically the credibility of a speaker, so naturally Carl's Jr. has employed 4 celebrities in their commercials for just that. To build up the viewer's belief in their product, Carl’s Jr. piggy-backed off of the admiration of well-known women celebrities thus establishing a base for the rest of their ad. Cue the overly-sexual eating of their burgers and it is clear they are utilizing pathos or the audience's emotions of lust and hunger.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Into the Electronic Millennium by Sven Birkerts, written in 1991, is an informative essay that goes into depth about how society is becoming dependent on electronics as a way of communication. New generations will encounter drastic changes as a result of the switch from printed words to electronic media. Birkerts’ intent is to inform his audience about the dangers that electronics will bring to future generations. He thinks that seeking information through printed words are becoming a rarity for younger people. He also claims that since people are dependent on electronics now, people do not have a mind of their own.
