During the nineteenth century, Manchester,England was leading in textile manufacturing due to the cotton mill and it being the first industrialized city. The industrial growth increased the population to over 300,000 by a span of 100 years, this new increase was due to working class and immigrants. In document 1, there is a vast growth in the city of Manchester over the span of 100 years. Manchester was given representation in Parliament and the middle-class men received the vote. While the growth of industry was needed in Manchester for better development of modern society, it came with many issues.

Issues raised by the growth of Manchester are due to technological advancements, poor working conditions, and health of the citizens. Document 6 is an example as it talks about …show more content…

Manchester is described as an ugly city that has no beauty and is so filthy and foul it can turn a good man into a savage[doc 2&5].One person questions if the progress was worth the physical suffering [doc 7]. Document 11 shows a painting from The Graphic of the horrible pollution in Manchester where the peasants live.

Even though there were negative reactions there was also positive reactions. Many of the nobles agreed that the working conditions improved over the years[doc 10]. Some however, agreed that it should not matter how working conditions are because the peasants have always lived terrible lives[doc 3].Others who do not agree with the others agreed that Manchester was truly beautiful because of the tremendous growth of industry[doc 9].

Technological advancements,health conditions,and poor working conditions were all issues raised by Manchester’s growth, and people reacted in both negative and positive ways.The Industrial revolution affected everyone’s life by changing energy usage,public health,social improvements, and natural resources.
