Watson and the investigators take to solve the murder. The main theme of the book is deception. Deception is carried out throughout the novel up until the end. For example Birdy Edwards also known as John Douglas, was a Pinkerton agent who posed as a Scrower. Douglas took down the Sccrowers from the inside gaining their trust through deception until he could eventually take them to justice and disband them. Another main plot point of the novel that features deception is the murder of John Douglas. Originally it was believed that John Douglas had been murdered in his manor and was never to be seen alive again. This was not the case Douglas had killed his assailant and changed the clothes of the attempted murderer with his own. Deceiving the authorities and his wife until Holmes solved the curious
After the Mormons left the Vegas area in 1857, the next significant chapter opens in 1865. It was then that Octavius Decatur Gass purchased the Mormon fort and converted it into a ranch. Gass was a Scotch-Irishman and hailed from Ohio. Gass was thinking at the time that this ranch would be a good stopping point for gold diggers and other people coming through the valley area. With the help of friends he started work on restoring the foundation of the fort to convert it into a working ranch.
The female black widow eats her male counterpart after mating and Lavinia Fisher is her own version of the infamous black widow spider. Legend has it she is the first female serial killer in history; her and her husband both locked away in the crummy, dark old city jail located right here in Charleston. Some believe she was convicted of murder but her execution was necessary. The notorious case of Lavinia Fisher, and the rundown jail where her spirit is said to still reside, interest me because of its deep seeded mystery and its effect on Charlestonians and tourist alike.
Dennis Rader better known as the “BTK Killer” or the “BTK Strangler” terrorized the Wichita Kansas area from 1974 to 1991 by binding, torturing and killing (hence “BTK”) at least 10 victims in that period. For nearly two decades, Rader wasn’t even suspected until nearly fifteen years after his final victim was murdered. In 2005, well after the BTK case became an unsolved cold case with no leads whatsoever, Rader was suddenly a prime suspect. What made him became something of a suspect was because he began taunting the police, by initiating a series of communications with the media.
Overcoming loss is a life-changing cycle, however some characters in the book Dandelion Wine showed extreme courage. Not everyone shows the moral capacity that Douglas had. He experienced more losses at the age of 12, then grown ups usually have had. Experiencing loss can be a life changing process, but Douglas showed the strength needed to overcome the issues he faced. John Huff, Colonel Freeleigh, and Great Grandma Spaulding are the three people that affected him the most.
The Devil in the White City portrays the Chicago World’s Fair as a significant event that set itself in America’s history books as one of its greatest achievements. Though the Fair itself was a sensation alone, with all its dazzling features and worldwide attention, the Fair was not the only significant even happening in Chicago at the time. This event however involved murders hidden by the shining brilliance of the Fair. The murderer in question, arguably America’s first notable serial killer, was H. H. Holmes. Through the use of descriptive imagery, the juxtaposition between him and the World’s Fair, and the one self-defining allusion of Holmes, Erik Larson provides the reasons why Holmes truly is the Devil of the White City.

Deception is used by many characters, as well as agencies, to help with confusing and hiding information from others for a higher purpose. In le Carré’s novel, the art of deception is not forgotten or ignored by the spies and other people involved in the plot. On the contrary, it is highly used to the point where the end justifies the means. It doesn’t matter how the agencies or the characters get to their own personal goals, as long as they achieve them, through a morally acceptable way or not. A great example of this is the deception used on Liz to get her to come to court where Leamas is on trial.
In “Bones”, the forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, also known as Bones, has many similarities to the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is an intelligent human machine who is detached from society with the exception of his occupation. Although Sherlock Holmes does have a family, he isolates himself from them. In both the books and television shows, Sherlock Holmes is represented as the best of his kind. Not to mention he loves and feeds on the intellect and excitement of a new case.
The novel climaxes as Fowler finds out Pyle is involved in serious espionage efforts, working to establish General Thé as an American backed Third Force in the war. Pyle is immune to the violence and sees it as necessary for the cause, but Fowler is disgusted by it and frequently says that he hates war. The story is told outside of chronological order, and the reader gathers facts here and there. In the end, Fowler reveals that he had arranged for Pyle to be killed by a Communist leader, after finding out that Pyle
"The Dying Detective" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and "An Invitation to Murder" by Josh Pachter are mystery stories in which numerous elements can be compared and contrasted. Firstly, both stories include examples of situational irony. In "The Dying Detective", it is expected that Sherlock Holmes is ill, in need of a cure; In contrast, he was not actually dying. The characters in "An Invitation to Murder" expect Mrs. Abbott to physically kill her husband, yet he dies because he needed medication to support his condition.
The captivating and mysterious story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, starred Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson. Along with these two famous detectives, the other main characters were Helen Stoner and her stepfather, Dr. Roylott. The thrilling and suspenseful conundrum of the tale took place at Stoke Moran- the Roylott Manor- in April 1883. The mystery began with Helen Stoner arriving at Baker Street, the residence of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; she informed them of her sister’s peculiar death and of her stepfather’s cruel behavior.
In reading the Douglas Narrative, I found that a lot of the themes and topics that we discussed in class came to the forefront. First, I recognize the relationship between Douglas and his mother. Separated at birth, he is denied the presence and affection that a child is supposed to receive in the shaping years. Douglas is aware that his father is rumored to be his master, Captain Anthony, which makes him a tragic mulatto. Tragic Mulatto is a person of mixed raced, typically mixed with black and white.
Most of the characters tell the truth in the book but there is absolutely no way to know the entire truth. The people’s true identity in the novel Murder on the Orient Express are all covered with their lies and deceitfulness. Murder on the Orient Express supports the cliche because it describes some of the situations that go on throughout the novel really well. “Be yourself.”
Sherlock Holmes, with his witty personality and attention to details, is, perhaps, one of the most well-known crime solvers today. The Hound of the Baskervilles, by A. Conan Doyle, uses mystery, secrets, and hidden horrors to create a dominating presence in the mystery genre. Mystery is one surefire way to gain an audience’s attention. The hound, a supernatural element hunting a family for generations, hooks readers with the desire to figure out the truth. With a mystery as the basis of the story, smaller mysteries appear as the appearance of the hound is researched.
