In the world of modern film, numerous works are originally literature before they are recreated into films. Some adaptations can enhance the interpretation of its original text or in one’s opinion take away vital aspects of the story. Rod Sterling’s television program, “The Twilight Zone”, has recreated many famous literary works and became a popular in the living rooms of the 1960s. One episode recreates the short story, “The Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce. It tells the story of the man in the 1800s facing the final moments of his life before being hung on a bridge for a crime he committed. Bierce explicitly illustrates this tale through his own words in an exceptional manner. Television’s famous Rod Sterling, recreates this story and televises it for modern audiences to view physically. The film and story bring their own enhancements and restrictions towards the message of the story. They each bring unique aspects that help the audience interpret the message. This also conveys the general mood of the literary work that dwells in the occurring events that take place. The text and film create this mood by using the senses they are able to utilize. This creates a response from the audience, who uses all the given information to grasp the story’s concepts. Other factors help create a literary relationship between the audience and the characters in the story. After analyzing both works, they both delivers the idea that death is inevitable when one’s time has come. Both the film and text display the human minds fight to escape death by simulating a false reality before meeting the grim truth. Bierce and Sterling achieved delivering this idea in their own construction

According to the dictionary, humanity is “the quality or state of being humane” (Merriam-Webster). Being humane says that we should be compassionate and generous. This is how we should be treating others, yet during times of war and strife it often seems that humanity is thrown out, leaving people in a primal state. This affects not only the soldiers actively taking part in the war effort but also those seemingly innocent bystanders. In the short story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, the author portrays a semi-omniscient narrator prescribing one such innocent.
Right from the start, it is obvious that the tone of the story is dark. Narrated by Death, the novel explores various aspects
Death plays a bigger role in life than life itself. When people die, people cry, and while people cry, a clear moment of lucidity occurs. Death is what makes every moment worth living and is told through stories of books and movies with symbols both subtle and blunt. Night, for example, is an autobiographical novel recalling Eliezer’s experience through concentration camps while The Book Thief is a historical fiction film where Liesel is a bystander who participates in activities symbolizing war. History is intertwined death.
"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" begins with the capture of the protagonist Peyton Farquhar, a plantation and slave owner. Bierce paints a vivid picture of the surroundings around Farquhar as he awaits to be hanged. It then flashes back to the days leading up to the hanging. Where Farquhar was deceived by a federal spy claiming to be a confederate soldier. In the end, we see Farquhar escape from reality as he is serving his sentence to finally his demise.
The story is written in a way that makes you believe the main character is alive and free, but in reality you are reading the last wishes of a dead man. The ending definitely caught me by surprise due to author’s efforts in playing with the main character’s point of view. I think the author also performed well with descriptive words as I could paint the scenes in my head like the, “...whirled on with a velocity of advance and gyration which made him giddy and sick” and “...the abrasion of one of his hands on the gravel...” (Bierce 604). The use of this imagery also helped the author convey the illusion of fantasy and
Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” revolves around the manipulation of time through the conflict of man versus nature. Bierce uses time in his favor as he switches between the past and the present life of the main character, Peyton Farquhar, as he lives his last moments. He uses this to show how time can be “subjective and phenomenal during times of emotional distress”. (BookRags). The manipulation of time that is unnoticeable whilst reading the story strengthens the themes that are present in this work, such as man’s denial of mortality, and the conjuring of irrational situations.
The imaginary line between Reality and Illusion In many works of literature, short stories are fictional work used to elaborate on a theme but shorter than an novel. Ambrose Bierce, an american journalist and author, wrote “ An Occurrence at Owl Creek bridge to develop meaningful themes and symbols, correspondingly Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of many novels, and of the short story “ Young Goodman Brown” pursue the same idea. Both stories illustrated many topics, such as images and symbols, analysis of a fundamental issue, diction and many more, which were commonly used, however each story had a unique topic not spoken of; Loss of innocence, good vs. evil, etc… In the intention of analyzing a fundamental key issue-Reality vs Illusion,“Realism”- which takes place in both short stories, Ambrose Bierce’s “ An occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, illustrate the issue by allowing us the reader to think and picture Peyton Farquhar’s escape in our mind. “As he rose to the surface, gasping for breath, he saw that he had been a long time under water; he was perceptibly farther downstream -- nearer to

The suspense of the story shows the uncertainty of death throughout
{I can’t think of a dang introduction sentence for the life of me. Good thing this is a rough draft]. Together with four classmates in my English class, I created an anthology of five poems on the theme of death. The authors within the anthology include Bill Knott, Dusan “Charles” Simic, Donald Justice, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Kathleen Ossip. My favorite poem in the anthology is “Eyes Fastened With Pins” by Dusan “Charles” Simic, as it is well written, with the use of rhetorical devices and personal experience, to ultimately convey his belief that death is inevitable, no more or less special for anyone in particular.
To summarize this essay, there are several points that highlight differences between the two films, yet the overall context of the film remains the same. One common theme that tends to drive the force between the reasoning in why the two films have varying aspects is because they were made for slightly different audiences at different times in society. Though both versions of the movie have small portions that vary from one another, the main emphasis is the same and both versions are loved by the
Death can never be escaped no matter what. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe shows the theme of death, a suspenseful mood, and an ominous tone. Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife. Death is shown how inevitable it is with Poe’s writing and experiences combined together.
Death is usually portrayed as a heartless and cruel character, but in the story the author shows a different side of death, with compassion and human-like feelings, which is very ironic. 2. What are Death ’s feelings for each victim?
They are both old and have health complications, but their deaths are not spoken of. In the movie, they two lovers lay in a hospital bed speaking of their life full of love with one another and as they close their eyes to sleep, they both die holding each other’s hands. The endings of stories are what tie a book together, making the difference extremely
