Final Exam: Prompt 1 In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest by Ken Kesey he discusses the harsh reality of living in a mental institution in the 1950’s. Kesey looks at the world from Bromdens view point a schizophrenic patient who the other patients view as deaf and dumb, despite his ability to hear and understand them just fine. The patients being use to their routines, or living “in the fog” as Bromden calls it. This lead to an uneasy change when McMurphy arrives from a work farm, pretending to be mentally ill, and disrupts their whole way of life. McMurphy is a trouble maker who as soon as he arrives begins to stir up trouble with nurse Ratchet, the main nurse on the floor, from the first time he is mentioned. Although it is told from Bromdens view you see McMurphy discover and then lose himself all as quickly as he came in. …show more content…
McMurphy is dead set on bringing the patients out of the fog. He tried this the first time during group therapy forcing most of the patients to stand against nurse Ratchet so that they can watch the World Series. During this vote everybody was too scared to stand against her, but later McMurphy earned their respect by proving to be a bigger threat then nurse Ratchet.
