Reading “Othello the Moor of Venice” was a very interesting storyline. It bleatingly emphasizes the concept of race throughout the plot. Written by Shakespeare, thus is considered one of his best pieces of work. The story has been remastered and used in a variety of different contexts and published in movies and has inspired many plays. This play was written surrounding four characters; Othello, Desdemona, Lago, and Cassio. Out breaking a theme of jealousy, revenge, racism, and love. Othello was either an African or Arabic general for the Venetian army. He was known as Moorish and was much respected, also the husband of Desdemona. Othello had a sidekick in Cassio and Lago was more of a colleague from the army. Lago was the most unfaithful out of the other characters. Having a spicy character situation like this, is one of the many reasons the story has been continuously performed. One of my favorite remakes is the movie “O”, made in 2001 starring Mekhi Phifer. …show more content…

Everything that his fellow Vikings do seems to upset him or contradict his own views. Throughout these events Harald develops a detachment to his fellow tribesmen as his thoughts describe those of disgust and annoyance.
Since the time and place of the the play which is set in Venice, a city known to have a strong military and contract large numbers of professional foreign soldiers, it wouldn 't be a surprise for a moor like young othello to be one of them, Othello or what most people call him “the moor” is respected for his military prowess. However, because Elizabethans viewed outsiders different from themselves with fear and horror, Othello is disparaged for being a moor. When Othello was written, Venice was known for its military power and for military leaders to be leaders of the city as well; because of this, Othello’s military position makes him a well respected leader in the play. Venice was “so successful at preventing invasion or outside control (Geography of Othello)” because the city “ was known to contract large number of mercenaries (Geography of Othello)” like Othello.
Regardless of their invalidity, however, simply the belief that these divisions are warranted is enough to render them truth, having a lasting impact of the health of a society and the individuals within it. In his work Othello, Shakespeare explores this concept—focusing on the city of Venice and the prejudices against the Moor. By the end of the
He thinks Othello’s love for Desdemona is not true, that money will change his mind. Lago says that he hates the moor (the black man). Othello is a gentle natured, middle-aged, black man that Desdemona
As humans we all have been where rumors have been spread about us or where we do the opposite. They, however, all tend to do some harm to us and it can cause certain conflicts to occur during the process. Death can be the outcome of something like this because this did happen to three innocent people. They were all wrapped up in a bed of lies that ended their lives sooner than expected. Thesis statement: Othello Desdemona and Emilia ended up with unfortunate deaths because of Othello 's integrity towards Iago.
“Othello” written by William Shakespeare revolves around this protagonist who is depicted as strong and powerful. To everyone he is known as Othello or the Moor. Throughout the play, Shakespeare portrays numerous counts of jealousy and manipulation around many of the characters. It is mainly illustrated through Iago, the antagonist of the play, who manipulates other to their downfall. Othello was born a Muslim Turkish Moor. When he was older, he was “taken by the insolent foe/ And sold to slavery” (Shakespeare 698). It was likely during this time he found his way into the white-dominated Europe, where he eventually had to procure his own freedom. After this, he joined the Venetian military and ascended to the rank of General. In this position, his main war is with “the Turkish fleet.”
Othello’s Role in Venetian Society If we take the textbook definition of ethnic groups and apply it to Othello and the Venetian society it is striking that he lacks a lot of features when compared to the “regular” Venetian society: no common background nor history and no shared customs. Therefore, not only his skin color sets him apart, but also his origin from another ethnic group, opening all kinds of
Manipulation of the African Race in Othello In William Shakespeare’s Othello, racism is a principal theme that drives the plot of the entire play. An outlier in Venice, Othello the moor or African, is targeted by his ensign Iago because Cassio who seems to be unqualified, was promoted to a lieutenant before he was. Iago is driven by envy and jealousy and creates a confusing and elaborate plan to deprive Cassio of his position. Iago also shares these envious motives with Roderigo, a man lusting over Othello’s wife.
Unlike Zeus, Odin cannot shape shift but is capable of commanding animals. Two ravens serve as Odin’s eyes and ears in the mortal realm while he rules in Asgard. Odin is considered the father of the gods and is referred to as the
Thor is a God who is associated with thunder, lightning, storms, and strength. In this myth Thor is wed to a goddess Sif, who is associated with Earth. Many Germanic myths that still exist today focus on the Gods and their interactions with others. Another God that is mentioned in literature is Odin. In the Anglo-Saxon tales, Odin has knowledge throughout the worlds and supposedly hanged himself as an act of self-sacrifice.
Throughout the play, Iago, Roderigo, and Brabantio display covert or overt racism towards Othello. At the beginning of the play, Iago, Othello’s ensign, and Roderigo, a wealthy man in love with Desdemona, discuss Othello’s marriage and their hatred for Othello. During their dialogue, the first references made of Othello are “his Moorship” and “the Moor,” which is how most of the characters refer to Othello (Shakespeare 687). Rather than referring to Othello nominally, they refer to him by his ethnicity, showing their inherent racism.
