In today’s society, the goal of eating local has blown up from across the country, or the world rather. Supporting the local movement not just benefits oneself, but the environment as well. The debate whether or not eating local is beneficial or necessary, comes down to the value of time and money. Many Americans go towards what's cheap and won’t hurt their wallet. However, they do not realize all the benefits of eating food grown and produced locally. Although eating locally can put a strain on one’s wallet, resorting to locally grown produce can put a positive impact on the world. Consuming locally grown produce comes with healthy benefits for everyone. Local produce is fresher and tastes exceptionally better(A). When buying grocery, one should believe in the “quality over quantity” rule. Yes, buying local food is expensive in terms of travel. Current initiatives being discussed in congress focus on creating programs that are economically feasible for larger-scale grocers to move to lesser economically desirable locations at federal level.3 These initiatives entail creating incentivized programs for large grocery companies as a possible solution to combat unequal access to healthy food options in urban and rural communities.3 However, instead the focus should instead shift to local businesses and convenience stores due to their ability to make changes without hurdling the complications of federal law. Providing incentives to local businesses and convenience stores to provide locally grown fruits and vegetables in their stores will yield greater access to fresh produce at an affordable cost to community members. We were asked to read two articles one was “On Buying Local” by Katherine Spriggs and the other was “What’s Eating America” by Michael Pollan. In the article “On Buying Local,” Spriggs showed a great use of logos when she stated that it was better for us to buy locally because it was better for the environment. Spriggs gives us several reasons why we should give up “a little bit of convenience” in favor of helping the environment. Farmers wouldn’t have to lose their farms to larger farms, smaller farms could be more sustainable by using natural and local resources, and there would be fewer emissions. This idea has been meeting with some opposition people worry of economic damage, but Spriggs has shown the argument and counterarguments with the proof of how the argument is flawed.
In the US, 40% of food produced, or approximately 365 million pounds of food, is wasted each day. Food waste, however, is a problem that extends beyond America, affecting billions of people as a global issue. The overwhelming amounts of food that are being discarded contribute to global warming and climate change, and prevent the massive number of hungry people from being able to eat nourishing meals. Humanity as a whole must be more mindful of the Earth and its health, as we are the source which most directly affect it. Due to the profound environmental impacts of food waste, a reduction in the amount disposed is necessary to create a more sustainable environment, and humans have a responsibility to protect the planet, even if it requires drastic changes to the current food system.

The Locavore’s Dilemma is an article written by Christophe Pelletier. In this article he explains as to why buying food exclusively inside a 100 miles radius is not a wise or sustainable choice. He says that while in the future changes to the production and transportation of food may change, limiting yourself to food within a 100 mile range is not the right way to go.
