There have been instances where a company will ask a prospective employee if they can view their Facebook page before they hire them.(Privacy Settings Are Not Enough). Do you think they should be able to do that? Nobody should make the mistake in believing that social media background checks are merely a passing fad—they are the wave of the future and figure to become even more prominent in the years to come. "It is definitely the future," Hyman says. "In fact, with as many as 90 percent of companies doing this already, the future is very much here now."/(Not a Fad). It is not an uncommon expectation for employers, regardless of their market cap, to have active social media accounts spanning from one to four different websites. The Board has only just begun to address the many issues raised by this new mode of communication. Thus far, however, it has failed to match the speed of the evolution of social networks. During the past several years, the Board consistently found that employees engaged in protected activity when they posted negative statements about their employers on social media websites. In doing so, the board failed to acknowledge the important aspects of social media that makes it wholly distinct from the traditional workplace
The number of people fired over social media posts is rising, and many employers look closely at a job candidate's online presence before making a decision. According to a 2013 survey from CareerBuilder, which helps corporations target and attract workers found that 39% of employers dig into candidates on social sites while 43% said they had found something that made them deep-six a candidate such as posting inappropriate photos or information, or bad-mouthing a former boss. On the other hand, 19% said they found information that sold them on a candidate, such as communication skills or a professional
The Use of Social Networking Nowadays, we are living under decent technology and it has changed a lot of things: Entertainment, communication, and relationship; economy, education, and habit; medical, political and cultural etc. Social media has allowed us to interact with many more people other than we are used to before. We are living in a world where people would rather use text message with their mobile phone than face-to-face to each other, share greeting with more than hundreds of friends on the social media such as upload how they feel on Facebook, show photo Instagram, and what they are doing with Snapchat.
Professionalism Report Social media has grown so much in the past years and the way people use it is so different, “it can be a double-edged sword” (2014). Now it can help you get a job or make people not even take you in consideration for a job. Companies started using it to promote themselves and get more clients, or good reviews. According to the first article I found, “employers use it to see if you would be a good image for their company” (2014). If they see anything unprofessional they will most likely put your application to the side.
Throughout the past ten years, social media has increasingly become a phenomenon all over the world. In the United States alone, 81% of the population owns some sort of social media account (“Percentage of U.S. population”). With this increasing number, social media has reached an extremely large audience in which resulted in a melting pot of diverse discussions on daily topics. Due to this enormous audience, one must be quite cautious about what they share online. These platforms have become a useful tool that may result in real-life consequences if used in an inefficient way.
Today everyone is obsessed with social media. People are easily influenced by almost everything they come across on the internet including appearance and body image. In todays generation it is so common to be unhappy with the way you look. All this is due to societies high standards on the way we “should” look. With social media you can do many things, including pretending to be someone you are not.
Because of this, people can leave traces of their personality everywhere and for others, even recruiters to see. These samples of one’s personality become digital representations or digital reputations (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2012). Basically, the popularity of the web makes it easy for recruiters or companies hiring to find would-be employees, and it makes hiring less bias, as talent can be directly identified and easily found without going through established channels. In other words, businesses don’t have to go through friends of friends and stay in a small circle anymore, than can reach out to anyone qualified at any time and get an instant response. The efficiency of this, seeing someone’s personality and creating a dossier based on their online presence is fast and maybe a better predictor of true behaviors (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2012) and at least partially removes the need for background checks.
The world as we know it today is dynamic in nature, and technological advancements and the use of social media has facilitated the re-shaping of the way the society deals with things. In other words, we now thrive in a connected world. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Snap-chat practically drive everything in our society, and the usage continues to grow. I don’t see the reasons why everyone nowdays os so caught up in everyones elses lives. What does it take to have a little privacy, why do certain businesses like banks and certain online businesses as well need so much proof of our identity, date of birth last paycheck etc, we can only g so far in proving our identity. Sometimes it is nice to keep certain information about ourselves withheld from others facebook allows you to do this if you enable privacy settings on your profile or something but yet still facebook still knows everything about your date of bith, where you live what you are studying etc, even one day if you decide to delete your profile , facebook still keeps your copy so in fact you still actually have a facebook page in your name but it is no longer active. Facebook is a very dangerous site, people can find out so much about you ,even if your info is on private , your pictures can still be shown t the wider public, these pictures might come against you for example when you are applying for a job or wihthin your friendship group for example if you didn’t tell one of your friends aomething and they found out through facebook.
