“Choices” Nikki Giovanni is a strong woman who expresses her emotions through the words she write. With every stanza or line that she wrote there was a significant meaning behind it. Giovanni used her words as a window to speak and inspire. This poem entitled “Choices” by Nikki Giovanni was written after her father’s death. Giovanni was very distraught by the sudden death of her father. This was an unexpected turn, as he passed away on June 8,1982, the day after his 39th birthday. This was the very same year that Giovanni decided to write this poem. She used this poem as a window to reach her readers, while letting out her deepest emotions through poetry to mourn the lost of her father. This is a double-sided piece of poetry that deals with decisions; implying that there are two conflicting sides of the story. In the passage it discusses the decisions one makes when you think you are entitled to something. These choices you have are between things you do not acknowledge. In Nikki Giovanni’s, “Choices” Giovanni shed light upon the choices we cannot control through her aggressive tone, sense of entitlement, and reality. Before all else the author comes out aggressive and solid expressing that "If I can’t do what I want to do then my job is to not do what I don’t want to …show more content…
The reality of the situation was that she had no control over her father’s death. There was nothing or no way that she could have prevented the events that took place. Although she was extremely angry with the situation at hand she learned that she had other things to be grateful for. She wanted people to know that even though something or someone has passed away you can’t stay stuck in the state of depression forever. You have to step back and look at your life because the reality is, life still moves on. You have to make the best of what you have right now by doing everything to the best of your abilities; Living life with no
In the book “Secret Life of Bee’s” by Sue Monk Kidd, it tells a story about a young girl named Lily and her childhood and what strong memories she has had that have impacted her life. In the beginning of the story it starts off by Lily introducing her father who she called T- Ray. She goes on and describes him as a cruel father who gives her no love or attention. Of course when you get no attention from your father you start to ask why you don’t get any from your mother, but Lily’s mom died December 3, 1954 when Lily was four years old. What had happened was that Lily’s mom ( Deborah ) had got herself into an argument with T- Ray and there was shoving and a gun involved.
She’s felt hardship and loss of her father’s death and because
I was interested to see how she coped with life after a child’s death. But I feel like I didn’t get a very personal account. The story read more like a written statement than an insightful and reflective interpretation of what happened. Bobbi Gilbert takes you through the series of events paragraph by paragraph, day by day, citing exactly what transpired. This way of writing removed me from the story and I never felt connected to the family the way I would have hoped.
Once Joe, her second husband, had died she knew things would be different because now she could finally breathe which is the reason for the saying, “ She sent her face to Joe’s funeral but her mind went rollicking with the springtime across the world.” The one thing that was holding her back had finally been lifted up off of her shoulders. To resume, “...she was there in the big house and sometimes it

A choice is defined as an act of selecting or making a decisions when faced with two or more possibilities. Her demise is almost tragic, after all she’s a mother avenging the loss of her son. She lives in an awful place with only her son for company. Losing her companion fuels her rage. Her actions are understandable from a certain point of view. She did what any grieving mother would do for their slain son.
The second topic is about being grateful. Giovanni acknowledges that she can’t have everything she wants in life, and that she needs to be thankful for the things that she has already. The finer things in life, are not always good for you. Giovanni says that “If I can’t have what I want… then my job is to want what I’ve got and be satisfied that at least there is something more to want.” That quote above means that, yes Giovanni does realize that there are better things that she has in life but that does not mean that those particular things will make her life any better than it already

Giovanni’s Room Love is a funny thing, it doesn’t always turn out the way we want it too and we can’t choose who we love. The main theme of James Baldwin’s story “Giovanni’s Room” is that love is difficult, scary, and not always what you expect. Although many people thrive on the love they feel for someone, David finds it to be a terrifying and confusing thing. In “Giovanni’s Room” David is reflecting on how he found love when he less expected it and was afraid, saddened, and even a little ashamed by it.
The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and the Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson were both written by women to express how they were treated in their time period. Both of these stories were criticized because they challenged the belief that a woman should not be just a docile wife. These two pieces of literature utilized symbolic imagery, repetition, and dramatic irony to convey the common theme shared that women are opressed by the standards of society. In Chopin's Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard sees the outside world through the only window in her room.
