When going down the road some diesel trucks go by blowing black smoke, well this is because it is tuned to use a fuel rich mixture. Also it does not use Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Diesel is a chemical product (“Diesel Exhaust Fluid Product Specification Sheet.” Graincofs, ). Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is an exhaust limiting fluid, one drawback of using it is having to pay for it, but the pros outway the cons. It has started to be used recently. Since it is new it has become very controversial. The fluid has good intentions but like in most cases there are people who think it is needed. DEF typically weighs nine pounds per gallon (“Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Q&A.” Cummins Filtration). In most cases many people have no idea what DEF is made up of. …show more content…

“In 2010 diesel vehicles were required to use DEF” (“Diesel Exhaust Fluid,” Renner Petroleum). Vehicles that do not use DEF produce a chemical nitrogen oxide (NOx). After DEF is injected into the exhaust and the nitrogen oxide has made it to the end of the exhaust it has now become just nitrogen and water vapor, which is harmless. By this system being used it makes the air a lot cleaner and easier to breathe. DEF is a very pure solution (“Diesel Exhaust Fluid,” Coleman Oil). The DEF is made to be used right before the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system. Diesel Exhaust Fluid is made up of generally safe chemicals. These chemicals include urea and water. “The mixture contains sixty-seven point five percent urea” (“Frequently Asked Questions”). “Also it contains thirty-two point five percent water” (“Frequently Asked Questions”). Urea is a form of nitrogen mainly used in agricultural practices until the production of Diesel Exhaust …show more content…

It is typically around twelve dollars for a two and a half gallon jug of Diesel Exhaust Fluid. This can be referred to as opportunity cost. The twelve dollars someone spent on DEF could have been spent on something else like, like essentials or some other nonessentials. The more money someone spends on DEF or fuel, the less money someone will have in their wallet. There are many pros of using Diesel Exhaust Fluid or buying a vehicle with one or multiple of the four nitrogen oxide reducing systems. One of the pros is that Diesel Exhaust Fluid is used very efficiently. For example one gallon of Diesel Exhaust Fluid is used every two hundred miles. DEF is sold in four different size containers most places. For trucks that have Diesel Exhaust Fluid systems they are required to use DEF so it is definitely a pro that it is efficiently used. Also since the efficiency of Diesel Exhaust Fluid is this high it is likely that it will get a lot higher in the
