Recently the public school districts began enforcing a stricter meal policy, however it doesn’t go far
Nicholas Confessore, the author of ”How School Lunch Became the Latest Political Battleground”, displays the challenges of transitioning from the old rules to the new rules as part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign. It is clear to all parties that childhood obesity is rising at a dangerous rate in America and school lunches are believed to be the necessary first change. Unfortunately, the multiple different parties that are involved in making the changes do not see eye-to-eye. The School Nutrition Association is one of the groups pushing back against the new government policies. Since the SNA is comprised mostly of lunch ladies, they believe the current meals are the healthiest meal most students receive in a given day.
In Free for All: Fixing School Food in America, Janet Poppendieck points out in the very beginning of the book, that school food isn’t healthy at all and most aren’t helping break the chain of overcoming these issues. She starts off by explaining her visits to various schools and her hands-on experience into the world of school lunches. Poppendieck explains how nutrition-deficient meals came to dominate America's schools and discusses the problems in the national school lunch/breakfast programs. Even how those in charge of creating these menus overlook what is really being given to these children for lunch/breakfast just because they can label it as a fruit or a vegetable. She shows how many key figures are looking for reimbursement from the free, reduced, or full priced meals because they can claim some federal dollars, and make sure that kids at least taking three out of five items offered to them; this is what congress called “offer versus serve”.
Describe structural racial inequity. Why is it important to consider a structural perspective? How does this relate to the sociological imagination? Structural racial inequity is the concept that people of color have lived and continue to live in the most under-resourced communities as a result of the intersection between numerous policies and institutions.
Look back at what you ate at school and ask yourself if it is healthy. Is there healthy alternatives to school lunch? Is there a variety of choices to choose from? Are there any vegetarian choices for the students? These are just some of the basic questions you would ask yourself when thinking about the risks of school lunches.
In the year 2010, President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama created the “Hunger-Free Kids Act” of 2010, which has created problems among students. In the year 2012, Michelle Obama also created the “Let’s Move Campaign” in order to reduce childhood obesity, and to give students access to healthy food in their school lunches. The “Hunger-Free Kids Act” means that no student should go hungry, and the “Let’s Move Campaign” makes the lunches healthier. Unfortunately, due to the quality and quantity of the meals that the students now receive, more kids are refusing to eat school lunches, and remain hungry during school hours. Not only does this outrage students, it also infuriates parents, teachers and staff as well.
It is spending money that we don’t have for a lunch with fruits and vegetables that we just throw away (4)”, students do not want just spend their money on food that is not even the half of the food they used to get in the previous lunch program, counting the price the lunches are higher and students are not happy with it. In addition, some students are choosing to get junk food, because the new federal lunch program do not appetize them “it was kind of ironic that we are downsizing the amount of food to cut down on obesity but kids are going and getting junk food to fill their hunger (6)”, so even if the federal is trying to involve the students to eat healthy, students would always pick the option more accessible for them, and that will fill their
Are School Lunches Really Healthy For You? Imagine going to school and thinking, oh boy what am I going to have for lunch today? And all of the sudden you see something you don’t like, so you don’t eat it and then your stomach starts to growl.
I believe that the lunch menu at schools should not change to a more healthier lunch. In fact, it would most likely cause a lot of issues between parents and the school board. Students would not like the fact that all their favorite foods are gone. Also, students would start packing their own lunches at home and bringing their packed lunch to school. Some kids might just go without eating all together.
We are interested in studying if lunch type — hot or cold— affects a student’s block four grade. We want to perform this study because we want to know if a homemade lunch versus a school cafeteria lunch will affect a student’s ability to perform well in school. Many students believe that the cafeteria lunch is not sufficient enough to meet their personal needs. For example, the cafeteria lunch may not cook pasta the way they prefer or may not serve a dish they really love. Thus, many students opt to bring a homemade lunch which allows them the freedom to choose what to eat and how to prepare their lunch.
Briana Woolard Kevin Barham English 111 February 12, 2018 Healthier School Lunch Program Schools are now executing a healthier lunch program. Michelle Obama implemented the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2012. Dre. Axe wrote and article in May of 2017 about the pros and cons of the program.
“But her school lunch control regulations, which were passed in the name of healthy eating have been an utter failure” (Gonchar). The Healthy and Hunger- Free Kids Act was supposed to gives kids a better school lunch, yet it has failed. The ultimate result was that kids are not eating their lunches and money is being put to waste. “It’s great that schools are trying to make school lunches better, they’re not doing a very good job about it, starving kids at school isn’t exactly a way to get kid’s obesity down” (Arit John). Even though school are trying to make improvements the steps they are taking are actually worsening the situation.
To begin with, the taste alone of school lunches is beyond unsatisfactory. The meals provided by public schools are not appetizing. There exists a tangible disconnect between the enticing, nutritious meals advertised on the school board’s menus and what the students actually receive—pathetic portions and lukewarm meals slapped onto a tray. Children’s complaints about school lunches are often seen as trite. However, while common, they are not any less accurate.
In some schools some principals superintendents have made a decision to opt out of the Healthy choice foods and make there own semi-healthy foods that kids like. To reduce waste and bring back students who have opted to pack a lunch or go off campus for fast food, his districts cafeterias have installed stir-fry stations with abundant vegetables so students can have meals made to order. and he’s added spice bars so kids can even the bland. In schools some principals and administrators are starting to take action.
At our school lunch, you have two options to chose from. Our school everyday has a different menu for the students to chose from. There 's normally a choice A, a choice B, and sometimes a choice C. Choice A and Choice B normally are the opposite of each other. For example, every Monday is pizza day, and Choice A is cheese pizza and Choice B is Pepperoni pizza. I 'd say that there 's only one day that there isn 't a choice C, but the other days we have Choice C which is normally yogurt, cheese cubes, and bread.
