A Case Analysis of the Scott Sisters Jamie and Gladys Scott, infamously known as the Scott Sisters, were convicted for organizing an armed robbery of two African American men in Mississippi after three male alleged accomplices testified against them in exchange for a plea bargain. The armed robbery netted a grand total of eleven dollars, and there were no reported injuries during the attack. The Scott sisters were found guilty and were sentenced to “two consecutive life sentences” for armed robbery (Austin & Irwin, 2012). The sisters asked two African American men, named Johnny Hayes and Mitchell Duckworth, if they could give them a ride because they were stranded due to their car being out of gas. The two men consented and proceeded to give the sisters a ride to their destination. Before arriving at their desired destination, they stopped a local club known as the Cow Pasture because the sisters needed to use the restroom. After the sisters exited the car, they walked over two the blue Oldsmobile and had a conversation with the three male occupants of the vehicle known as the Patrick boys. After a few minutes, they returned to the vehicle and Gladys asked Haynes for permission to drive, and He consented. Jamie later became sick, and Haynes instructed Gladys to pull the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road. Then the Oldsmobile stopped directly behind them. The sisters stepped outside of the vehicle and one of the males from the vehicle pointed a shot gun and instructed Hayes and Duckworth to step outside of the vehicle and get on the ground. Sandford would go down in history as one of the courts most erroneous rulings. This verdict called into question a slaves rights in free states, popular sovereignty and the legality of the Missouri Compromise. Dred Scott had won a previous court battle over his former master John Sandford claiming that he had assaulted his wife and children and that he should in fact be a free man because he had been moved to Illinois and Wisconsin for a time. Could Atticus have won Atticus could not have won the case for Tom Robinson. Atticus tried to win the case but the Ewells won because the court favored whites. The case Atticus and Tom were in they couldn’t have won and Tom would have still went to jail even if he won the case. The United States criminal justice system is diminishing millions of lives every day. Ironically, the amount of inequalities that the criminal justice system portrays goes against the term ‘justice’. There is a 33% chance that a black male will end up in jail in his lifetime, while white males have a 6% chance. There are 4,749 black males incarcerated while there are only 703 white males. Prisons receive revenue of 1.65 billion dollars per year which makes them willing to incarcerate anyone that they can (“Enduring Myth of Black Criminality”).
To summarize this article, Tawana Brawley was an innocent 15-year-old girl that viciously been gang raped by six man one described as a cop. Her fragile body was found smeared with manure. Tawana later became a symbol, representing the unequal Justice for African Americans. Her story received many attention and was given lifelong donations that would benefit her in the future, but justice was never fought for this blameless girl. Nevertheless, When Rev. Al Sharpton, Alton Maddox Jr., and C. Vernon Mason took on her case that would be the beginning of the end to finding justice for Tawana.
Injustice The Scottsboro Case shed light on the racial practices expressed in law that made a great impact on the legal system today. The actual victims of the Case did not receive a fair trial due to the color of their skin. The ones who played the victims planned the crime, and their stories made no sense. But like many of the trials during the time it wasn’t based on the actual evidence that was found,or even the defendants ' stories.
