A recent article by “Il Corriere della Sera” stated that the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa saw the arrival of over 40,000 migrants from Tunisia and Libya, all seeking refuge for a better life in Europe. Although the majority of the Italian population believe that immigration affects the Italian economy, the level of delinquency rises given the lack of immigrants’ work, and the country undergoes political conflicts, I strongly believe that immigrants should be legally allowed in Italy since they are victims of political persecution, the country would have a cultural enrichment, and there would be labour for many areas where there is shortage, improving the Italian economy. There are many reasons that incentivize immigrants to abandon their native country, like the desire to improve their lives and the lives of their family, the desire for freedom, the ambition of being able to do something more, and most of all to escape from poverty, an oppressive …show more content…
The majority of these immigrants reach the shores of Lampedusa by any available means of transport, trying to be hidden from everyone and everything, and often risking to die during the "journey of hope”. I think it would be convenient to accept men and women escaping from poverty, misery, war and persecution, in search of a better future for themselves and their children. People who want to come to Italy to work legally and to get involved in our society, respecting its laws and culture. Italy posses many shelters, however the Italian government do not have the appropriate laws to address this problem. I think that if we work with intelligence and humanity, we will be able to solve this issue, and immigrants will have a better
The mid-19th century saw an unprecedented wave of immigrants coming into the country. At its peak, Ellis Island, the main processing station for immigrants, handled an astounding 5,000 people every day. Because of the language and culture barriers faced by each group of people, they often settled amongst themselves. Very quickly, country-specific neighborhoods began popping up throughout New York and the surrounding area. This helped to alleviate the stresses with moving to a new country; however, most immigrants came to the United States penniless and lived in low-income housing as their jobs rarely supported themselves let alone their families.
It is made evident that immigration would indeed best be addressed at its source, by making conditions better in a potential migrants’ homeland in order to stop their motivations to leave entirely. Organizations such as Heifer International and the Grameen Foundation work to help improve the quality of life within foreign countries by supplying direct aid to people in need. For example, Heifer International provides educational training to the impoverished in other nations to show them how to make better lives for themselves and handle their finances wisely. A key feature all these organization share is their focus on improving the quality of life for others within their own countries and showing them that migration is not the only option and that they can flourish within their own
When considering Italy after its formation as nation-state in the late 19th century, it has never been required to change by other countries. However, throughout the entire history Italian territory has faced many invasion and battles which have influenced it. But unfortunately, this country has also been involved in cruel events for the purpose of conquering new lands. Some of the most recent terrible actions done by this country were the conquest of African colonies during the Fascism. Indeed, the purpose of these mission in Africa were to destroy other countries such as Libya and Eritrea in order to provide benefits to Italians.
The fear of loss of job opportunities because of a higher rate of new incoming immigrants has lead to people indulge in vile behaviors to protect one’s personal welfare, releasing hysteria among the people. Many citizens with the same heritage as many immigrants that come to this country refuse to even accept their own people, for they are afraid that these might take away their economic stability. This fear of losing your job is one very predominant in modern society, because people are worried of how their financial status will drop. People worry about being financially stable because money plays a very important role in enabling humans to fulfill their basic and selfish needs. It can be seen how many of these people who have already lost their jobs will do anything to obtain a new one.
The opening scene of the film The Godfather starts with a man talking to the godfather he says, “I believe in America, America has made my fortune.” Immigrants of the United States can relate to such statement because America has a reputation of having great opportunities for prosperity. Consequently, immigrants from other countries come to America looking for a better experience than in their own countries. As a result the United States has served as the place for opportunities for various distinctive ethnic groups, immigrants, like the Godfather and his family who are Italian immigrants have settled down in United States but yet they have kept their culture intact. The godfather is the head of his family, and he is a powerful and well-rounded
The Immigration Act of 1924 sparked conversations surrounding whiteness that complemented nativist practices towards Italian immigrants. During and after WWI, the sweeping immigration of Italians was met with white backlash surrounding their ethnic and national backgrounds, with many whites branding Italians as swarthy, illiterate, and ragpickers.” Furthermore, fiction novels of the early twentieth century portrayed Italians as distinctly non-white. While the Immigration Act was well received by white nativists behind such xenophobic actions, heavily biased mathematical engineering behind the quota system inadvertently spurred the consolidation of an Italian ethnic identity through geo-national pride. While the Immigration Act of 1924, influenced

“Italian immigration hit a peak in the 1800’s totaling an astounding four million.” A great majority of these immigrants came from southern Italy. Political and economic oppressions dwindled resources for the southern Italian. Running out of opportunities many immigrated to America. Within America many faced similar struggles to that of home.
The “American dream” is a phrase that can have many meanings to different people, but the American Dream is the dream that people in the U.S wishes it comes true. An immigrant, an alien, comes to this country searching for that dream. The American Dream is basically a legend about success, about overcoming obstacles, and is about living that victorious life we all wish to have. Me being an Immigrant I know how important is for someone who comes from a different background, a place with a different language, and a country with a different culture to actually become somebody in this country. We immigrants have to work twice as hard as a regular born-U.S citizen.
To My Parents I am an immigrant. The word that Donald Trump hates. The set of people that receives many blames for crimes or mischief. But after all, thats me. I am like any other person who gets blamed, I am an immigrant.
For example, Nazario writes how Enrique has made the difficult decision to leave, “Enrique feels shame for what he has done to his family and what he is doing to Maria Isabel, who might be pregnant. Maria Isabel pleads him to stay”(42). Enrique wants a better life for himself and his family, he “feels shame” for what he has done. But feels trapped because of drugs and poverty, so to escape these problems and help his family, he decides he has to leave. In contrast to the narrative that immigrants want to take from Americans, many people who immigrate are desperate to get out of a dangerous environment.
Should people be allowed to immigrate? This multifaceted question exemplifies the contemporary news cycle. Hence, it raises the question regarding the rise of such highly debated and opposing views on such a matter. The theories of Karl Marx and subsequently, Frantz Fanon can be applied to such a perplexing phenomena to gain a more comprehensive understanding. It is empirically provable that people have migrated for thousands of years, however the matter has become immensely contested in the contemporary political and social sphere.
In Economic and Social Impact of Immigrants Stephen Moore is arguing that immigrants and refugees contribute positively to the American Economy. He conveys this through the use of surveys, data, and facts from multiple sources. In the second paragraph he took a 1986 survey that concluded that a lot of foreigners achieved success in this country in difficult positions such as engineering and entrepreneurship. Two separate studies’ discussed in the sixth and seventh paragraphs dispel common beliefs that immigrants take jobs away from natural born citizens. The studies concluded that the exact opposite of popular opinion, immigrants in fact benefitted the economy for employers, employees, and the US economic position.
The main goal of nationalism is to create a unified state with a single cultural identity. Before the age of nationalism, Italy and Germany did not exist but were made up of several smaller provinces and territories. The feelings of nationalism allowed Otto von Bismarck to unify Germany and Cavour to unify Italy, each into a single nation to join the rest of the great European powers. Nationalism in France and Russia was different as they were both already singular unified countries. The nationalistic goals for these countries was usually centered around gaining more freedom for the people.
The European refugee crisis is undoubtedly a massive problem, but with every problem, there is a
