The shrimp case study was the most eye opening exercise in the class because we were able to experience the process of creating a non-governmental organization. In an era of social movements and a push for change, the case study really made it clear that trying to make change and create a non-governmental group, whether it be a top-down approach or a bottom-up approach is difficult. Our goal as a shrimp justice NGO was to create transparency in the shrimp industry, but all the different stakeholders the methods of attaining transparency varied within interest groups. Starting with the last day of discussion in the closing statements someone in the Costco sustainability group questioned what we meant by social media, really changing the conversation. In my group, the environmental and labor activist Darien mentioned that we should the video with a link to allow people to click and learn more about the topic. Interactive media will allow the audience to create their own understanding of the issue and be truly involved with the information presented to them. Social media campaigns can create a push for policy change but cannot be the only way to create change which is why we mentioned policy change a lot at the beginning of the shrimp case stud. As the case study continued it came to realize that implementing policy will not do much because as a United States organization we have no jurisdiction in Taiwan. Through discussion, I came to the realization that it is easy to believe a law will truly change a whole system, but as we read the people who are enslaved and caught by the government are taken to jail. The system which manipulates the consumer to believe that workers are not exploited or enslaved are arrested when they are illegal immigrants that were sold into slavery. Reading more on the topic I realized there will always be a way to exploit workers, which is why policy change or social media cannot be the only way to implement change. Multiple methods for change are needed in the system that has been incorporated in everyone’s lives even if they do not
Due the human nature, the pursuits of liberty, justice, and happiness have always been major concerns of humans throughout the history regardless of the way individuals connected and organized. Before phones or emails were even invented, the underprivileged individuals or groups congregated through “close ties”. In the recent years, individuals with “weak ties” adopt a different approach on similar activism with the help of various social media. Although these events are meant for similar intentions, their different communication methods induce an enormous distinction on their impacts, says Malcolm Gladwell in “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted”. He depicts that the movements by people bonding with “strong-ties”(Gladwell 405) tend to impact the society with substantial advancement through “high-risk activism”.
Brine Shrimps tend to hatch in specific environmental conditions, such as high and low salt concentrations in water, weather and temperature. As one of the environmental conditions in which Brine Shrimp eggs hatch is water salinity and so, in this assignment, we were given 4 different salinity levels of water, which were 0%, 3%, 6% and 9%. As a result of the experiment, we noted that after 24 hours only one egg hatched at 3% salinity level and none at 0%, 6% and 9% levels. The second day, which was after 48 hours, there were 0 shrimps that hatched in 0% and 9% salinity levels, whereas at 3%, 7 out of 46(15.3%) eggs hatched and 6 out of 49(11%) at 6% levels. The idea of change is to make development, or advance toward a better future; however, to create change, society tend to fall under bloodshed. The American Revolution was a step to freedom, but the cause for independence has killed thousands of innocent lives. The result was seen again in the Civil War when the abolishment of slavery ended in destruction. The Revolution and Civil War might differ for whom they’re fighting for, but are similar with their use of violent. Understanding that violent is never the answer, Cesar Chavez, a labor union organizer and civil rights leader, seek a better approach to create change.

As previously discussed, previous policies that have been enacted, such as “reasonable suspicion” has led to the growth and acceptance of stop-and-frisk. As a result of policies such as these, mass incarceration is an incredibly profitable area of our society. However, history in general has prepared our economy for such policies. Slavery was used to keep plantations running with no cost to plantation owners. When slaves began to fight back, physical cruelty was used to keep them working for little to no compensation.
Lobsters caged in the Noonan’s restaurant symbolizes Stacy’s struggle with the intense feelings of fear and being trapped. She thinks about lobsters and their view of world around them: “It probably looks like an alien planet out here…so you don’t even know what the story’s a bout, who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy…Or maybe, instead of an actual place or thing, to a lobster it looks only an idea out here. That scared her.” (Banks 23-34).

Throughout history there has been many different movements and revolts that changed society for the better ,but in the process hurt many people mentally and physically and caused several devastating fatalities .Although at the end of most movements and revolts the desired outcome is granted , there were still many obstacles and points of struggle. In different parts of the world there are different laws and obligations and because citizens find them outrageous it will cause them to show acts of disobedience until the most fair and agreeable outcome is obtained. Luckily for us there are legislators who help instill the most justified laws so that the people in our society will remain satisfied and peace will brush through our neighborhoods. Civic engagement is an important topic as there seems to be a conflict between advocates of civic engagement in higher learning and those who oppose the addition of civic engagement in schools and universities. Since youth are active in their local communities more than ever and they shape the future of their respective societies, this essay will argue that civic engagement is critical and widely beneficial for students’ development (Cantor, 1995). Civic engagement is defined as the “individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern” (Carpini, 2001). Civic engagement can take many forms, from volunteering as an individual to organizational involvement to participating in elections. It encompasses the efforts to directly tackle an issue, collaborating with others in a group to solve a problem or cooperating with the establishments of representative democracy.
