The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a well-established safety net against hunger and need. SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible low-income Americans by helping these individuals meet their monthly budgetary requirements for nutritious food. Access to food-related programs like SNAP is vital to the overall well being and independence of many families. However, there are many strategies for leveraging SNAP as a public health program and redesigning it to meet 21st century nutrition challenges.
A nutritional policy change in SNAP must occur to improve nutritional health and prevent obesity in SNAP participants. Recently, the conditions of poverty, hunger and food insecurity have been associated with obesity and chronic disease. A dramatic rise in obesity rates is linked to changes in the food environment and increased caloric intake. Foods high in sugar, fat and refined starches are more widely available and affordable than that of organic, nutrient-rich foods. Therefore, it is recommended to increase public support for programs that incentivize the purchase of nutrient-dense foods in grocery stores. Many participants do not choose fruits and whole grains because it is not calorie-dense and energetically sustainable for a full workday. During my experience as a SNAP participant, I shopped at Whole Foods, an American supermarket that campaigns for the health and wellness of its shoppers. However, many of the organic, gluten free and GMO free products leaped in price compared to that of the products at Safeway. Nicholas Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer prizewinning books and “Prudence or Cruelty” was feature in the New York Times in 2013. In “Prudence or Cruelty” it discuss the potential of ridding our society of food stamps to help boost our economy. Children everyday wonder when, not what, their next meal will be. As sad as it sounds, but “5 percent of American households have very low food security” (Kristof 172). This basically means the household can run out of food whenever, and this usually leads to a parent not eating to make sure their kids have enough to eat.
I enjoyed the topic of the Annotation 1 worksheet, because I personally disagreed with the stance of the author. The Article argues that disallowing welfare users to spend their food stamp money on sugary drinks would allow users to lead healthier lives, but I do not think that the situation is that black and white. According to the article, “They would still receive every penny of support they now get, meaning they would have as much, if not more, to spend on nutritious food” (Farley). I believe that health can be a social construct, and what might be healthy to one person might not be healthy to another, and banning sugary drinks, does not mean that welfare users will go further in the act and make healthier decisions about everything purchased.

When they are at the grocery store, often times families are just trying to stretch their money as much as possible and get the most for what little budget they may have. Since fresh fruits, veggies, and protein are generally more expensive than their canned equivalents, they are usually passed up, except at the beginning of the month, when families receive food stamps. These canned substitutes are much higher in preservatives such as sodium and sugar. Other cheaper, quick meals are purchased such as Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Ramen Noodles, and canned tuna are chosen in their place. Food stamps are also known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) . People who are on food stamps will receive a vision card to pay for their groceries. People who are elderly, unemployed, employees but have low income, and disabled people can receive food stamps. The state prefers vision card users to purchase healthy foods and there are a list of food items you can buy with them available. If more than one person lives in the home, the SNAP office will need to see everyones income so that a monthly payment can be made and thats how they determine if you are eligible.
Introduction The United States of America implements many programs to aid its citizens in need. When thinking of world hunger, the first thing coming up to my mind is the economy. But it has got more than that in itself. Making a decision on switching factories of this world to whole organic productive ones is a big step which doesn’t only require money, but also a lot of psychologically backing. No one should have to choose. Eating healthy should not be a privilege only exclusive to the upscale.
While it is important that government support for school meals reduces economic hardship, increased efforts to also improve the nutrition among low-income children are still needed in the program. These efforts should be coupled with a broader focus on reducing empty calorie consumption and incentivizing healthy eating among low-income children. Often times, many lower income students will forego a healthier snack for a bag of chips and a soda. The school has a hand in perpetuation this issue by using funds for bulk goods that typically turn out to be snack foods or high calorie breakfast items.

The debate whether or not eating local is beneficial or necessary, comes down to the value of time and money. Many Americans go towards what's cheap and won’t hurt their wallet.
