The geography of the Southern Colonies featured rich soil. Coastal plains, forests, rivers and swamp areas were perfect for farming. The economy was heavily depended on timber, fish and, farming. Also, they were exported agricultural products to other colonies. Similarly like Middle colonies in the Southern colonies free people had religious freedom. The Southern Colonies also concentrated on agriculture. They also developed the plantations for exporting tobacco, cotton, vegetables, grain, fruit and livestock. The Southern Colonies had the largest slave population. Slaves for the most part worked on the plantations. The plantation was primarily for cotton, tobacco. The Southern plantations were huge and consisted the slave quarters.
The New England, middle, Chesapeake, and southern colonies were all colonies located in North America. For this reason many people thought that the colonies were all the same and should be viewed as a single society. This is not the case at all; they were as different as day and night and showed minimal signs of similarity. A society is people in general thought of as living together in organized communities with shared laws, traditions, and values.
The southern states included Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. These colonies were part of the original 13 that settled in the Americas. The geography included coastal plains, hilly areas and lots of forests. In addition too, the colonies were bordering the Atlantic Ocean. This allowed for two things, a food source (fish) and it also allowed implement mercantilism to happen such as trading with Europe and gaining a profit or trading in the triangular trade.
The plantations in Maryland were oversized by tobacco, and as prices dropped the plantation owners had no other choice but to have to entrust heavily upon slaves to amplify profits. As being one of the biggest exports for tobacco it really provided them with a hardship and a burden really of having to care for such many slaves. Because of this they decided to make their plantations self-sufficient. Many plantations consisted of the main house, slave quarters, a dairy,
Aristocrats, small farmers, and slaves populated the southern colonies. With the rich fertile soil - farmers growing a surplus of tobacco and rice could no longer keep indentured servants and turned to the slave trade for the high demand. Goverments were set by counties to appoint head sheriffs. No predominate religions were held in the southern colonies besides the Catholic Church in
By 1811 cotton had spread across many states including South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. During the territorial expansion there was a huge increase in the number of African American Slaves This occurred in the region spanning from the Atlantic coast to Texas. 75 percent of the south’s slave population consisted of agricultural laborers. Tobacco was an important crop in the 1800’sespecially in states like Virginia, Maryland and Kentucky.
The United States before the civil war was “divided” into 2 sections. The North and the South, the conflict leading up to the civil war was the lack of unity. This is called “sectionalism”, which means that you only have interest in your own “section”. How can we compare and contrast the North and the South?
The differences in the economy in the three different regions of the thirteen colonies were determined by both the people who went there and the environment. The environment limited how the economy was based because an agricultural economy needs good ground for growing, so without good soil, the economy would have to be based on industry. In the New England colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), the economy was dependent on their industries, not their agriculture. The Middle Colonies (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware) were equally dependent on industry as they were on agriculture. The Southern Colonies (Maryland, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia) depended on selling their
Great observation, I’m surprised you chose the Virginia colony because of their location of being in the south and through my reading and research; I found the south to be a cruel place for a slave. The southern colonies had extreme tough slave code laws as the Northern colonies were more lenient. I stated in my discussion, in the south, the slave population was outweighing the north and as it was stated in the text, slavery that developed in the southern colonies became almost standard (Reich, 2011, p. 124). The state of Virginia pride was tobacco and they need workers to work their plantations and even though Indenture servants existed during this period, they were viewed as being more of financial burdens the African American slaves.
White settlers from Virginia and the Carolinas, began to force original Native Americans further west and they moved in and established plantations in the now freed regions. The South was filled with the production of cotton, and it was controlled by plantation agriculture. As the cotton-based economy rose so did slavery, as slaves were needed to work on the plantations.
Religion in the Southern colonies wasn’t as big of a deal like it was in the Middle, and Northern colonies. The main religion in the south was, Anglican. The economy in the south was like no other. The South has warm weather and a good amount of rainfall. The two main crops included: tobacco and rice.
The southern colony and New England Colony had many differences. The New England colony was based more in manufacturing while the southern colony was about agriculture as far as their economy. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.
Specific characteristics of slavery and the slave trade in the English colonies were that plantation agriculture demanded a large labor pool, increasing slavery, and that the slaves specifically working on plantations in the Southern colonies and Caribbean were treated especially harshly. Large plantations located in the Southern colonies were focused primarily on tobacco because of the climate and large economic demand. The slaves that worked on these plantations were treated terribly because the plantation owners only cared about their crops and money; however, the slaves in the Caribbean were treated worse. Here, the plantations focused primarily on sugar cane because of the climate and large economic demand, and slavery was seen as especially
In the southern colonies the main people that inhabited the area were Catholics and protestants. The southern colonies ended up becoming excessively dependent on a plantation company that required slavery. Slavery was not a great solution to the labor problem but because a large portion or people owned a lot slaves and since that ownership was viewed as their wealth they were loathed to give up those slaves without financial compensation. Slavery was allowed in New England but very few people owned slaves. The Northern Colonies decided to take the weakling way out.
In the Middle Colonies, there was fertile soil and part of it was hilly and part of it was flat. There were some ‘mountains’, wide valleys, and fast rivers. In the Southern Colonies, like the Middle Colonies, the land there was fertile. It was very humid there. Their summers were very warm and rainy, and in the winters, it was a mild climate so it did not get very cold.
The thirteen colonies consisted of British colonies along the east coast of North America. Each of the thirteen colonies had similar ideas on laws and politics. Each of them were also controlled by Protestant English-speakers. Each of the Colonies developed its own system under an appointed royal governor. The British government operated its Colonies under a policy of mercantilism in which the central government administered its possessions for the economic benefit of the mother country.
