Strength And Courage In Bilbo's The Hobbit

The book The Hobbit tells the story of an anxious little hobbit, who, throughout the story, progresses to be a hero and a leader who shows bravery and strength and earns the respect of his comrades. There are two prominent themes in this story, one being that bravery comes in all shapes and sizes, and two is that it’s good to try new things. Bilbo’s confidence and strength stem at the beginning of the story in his hobbit hole, and to the end when he and the dwarves defeat the mighty dragon Smaug. Bilbo is just a little hobbit and even says it himself. Because of this many people don’t expect much from him. Despite this, Bilbo shows great character development, bravery, and strength. One of the more prominent times that Bilbo shows newfound strength and bravery is when, on page 156, he fights off a giant spider himself. “Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, mad a great difference to Mr Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder”. This shows a major character change in Bilbo, because of the fact that even he realizes it. Often times characters don’t realize a change when something major happens to them, but Bilbo did. This theme is also shown when Bilbo has to show inner strength instead of physical strength. On page 273, when Bilbo turns over the Arkenstone to Bard, he shows a lot of inner strength. “Then Bilbo, not without a shudder, not without a glance of longing, handed the marvelous stone to Bard”.
