In E. Lockhart’s book, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks, Frankie demonstrates the attributes of an ethical leader. An ethical leader is someone who values the rights of those around him/her, and strives to demonstrate leadership through moral deeds. Frankie is 15 years old, and attends Alabaster Prep Academy. She obtains those characteristics, and creates change in her community. Frankie leads the Bassets, a group of patriarchal secret society in Alabaster, to change the state of the cafeteria’s current vegetable offerings. She names this project, the canned beet rebellion. “Alabaster’s current vegetable offerings are canned and/or anemic. In fact, they are limp and grodie and not a proper salad bar.”(P271). Not all members could agree with the ideas and many thought that the jokes were dumb or pointless. Frankie took action and organizes this project. “In addition, each member of the loyal order received a private e-mail detailing his particular mission.”(P239). For each member of the Basset Hounds, Frankie took the time and effort to organize each participant’s actions in the task for an effective change in her community. Frankie’s message about the vegetable states in the cafeteria had gotten through from the community to the sponsor, Ms. Kargman. The sponsor realizes her mistake, and the needs of the student body. “And she was pleased to make a donation to fund the building of a larger salad bar in the caf, and committed to stocking it with fresh vegetables for the remainder of the school year”(P279).
