In the Bible and Virgil’s The Aeneid, the pursuit of honor and glory is complex, and it does not come without serious consequences and hardships. However, while Jesus and Aeneas both strive to achieve a certain goal due to divine intervention and both overcome certain adversities, their underlying motives and their ultimate outcomes are starkly different. Although it would appear that neither Jesus nor Aeneas would be motivated by personal fame or glory—as they were sent on godly missions, this is not the case in The Aeneid. Seemingly, both men are simply following the wishes of the divine. Jesus has been sent down to Earth by the Lord to “save his people from their sins” [Matthew 1: 21]. His entire life is devoted to spreading the word of God, and he is ultimately crucified so that all have the opportunity to live in the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is constantly giving thanks to the Lord and reminding those around him that the miracles that are being performed are done so out of God’s grace. After his encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus says, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work” [John 4:34]. Through reminders like this, it is obvious that Jesus truly only wants to share God’s love with the world. He is not at all corrupted by a greed for power or any personal reward. On the other hand, although superficially Aeneas is also following divine orders, he is truly seeking personal gain. The journey that Aeneas takes in book six shows that the ancient cultures of the Greeks, Trojans, and Romans had a concept or understanding of the afterlife that influenced their moral decisions and values. They believed much like Christians that the good would be rewarded and the evil would be punished. This essay will discuse the similarities and differences in Roman and Greek heroes by anylysing the primary and secondary sources they feuture in respectively. The main character, Aeneas, constantly faces conflict from both humans and gods. Aeneas is a Trojan hero and prince who embodies pietas, driven by duty, honor, and devotion, which makes him an example of an ideal Roman citizen. Aeneas was called by the gods and determined to be a successful founder of Rome, but he faced complications along the journey. In each conflict along the way, Aeneas dealt with fighting and violence and could not find peace until the end.
The continual decrease in birth rates was an alarming indicator of a decreasing elite class and of the depravity and adultery that plagued the Roman upper classes. Augustus believed that Rome’s long- term survival required adult citizens to produce more children but he did not want to deem this task up to individual conscience (wiki). These new laws which played a central role in the roman family unit for the next three centuries, absorbed and elevated the traditional power of the father figure in a Roman household. Hospitality is defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. In the Aeneid, plenty of acts of hospitality and inhospitable actions are both shown through out the novel. Aeneas and his trojan soldiers run in to both hospitable characters and inhospitable characters causing great excitement, as well as very tough hardship. Hospitality through out this novel is important because it not only provides a safe and welcoming environment to those who are stuck and left wondering if they have the option to continue traveling, but provides a friendship between complete strangers, freeing them to act and behave in a positive way. Even though there are multiple acts of great hospitality shown, some inhospitable actions by specific characters cause some major difficulties and challenges for the Trojan soldiers.

The virtue of piety was a defining characteristic in Roman life, Romans carried out their everyday lives in accordance of the ideas of pietas which is one’s duty to their family, God, and people; these Roman values are displayed in Virgil’s The Aeneid through the actions of the character Aeneas, and challenged further in the Gospel of Matthew by Jesus Christ. The word “pietas” is a Latin word that means dutifulness, and refers to the balanced duty to a person’s family, gods, and people in Roman culture. The Romans believed that for these duties to be upheld then it must be implemented in one’s everyday life, and this belief of the Romans separated them from other ancient societies. In books two and four of the Aeneid by Virgil, the Trojans and Aeneas do exactly the same. Through the epic of book II , Aeneas goes on to explaining the war between the Trojans and the Greeks. Book IV focuses on Queen Dido and her deep love for Aeneas and the importance of god 's word to Aeneas, which is problematic for for Dido. Virgil proves how in the Roman culture the Romans put god in front of themselves and what they believe.
He has little care for his comrades, with the exception of Patroclus. Contrasting this, Aeneas is a placid and disciplined warrior. In the Aeneid, Aeneas is a venerable leader and a benevolent Roman. Homer’s did not idolize Achilles by turning a blind eye to his very human flaws, his actions have clear consequences. The raw, emotional depiction of Achilles is almost the polar opposite of the sober Aeneas.
Homers characters seemed to be more interested in their honor and reputation far more than the characters in the Aeneid. Aeneid characters represent themselves as being more connected with human emotions than the ones in the Iliad, including Achilles most of all. This all shows how the Aeneid is more romantic and caring than the Iliad, causing the culture expectations for a hero more meaningful. Another reason why the Roman ideal hero is more meaningful than the Greeks ideal hero is because of the obstacles and problems the characters had to face.
