Luke: The book of Luke is believed to have been authored by Luke himself. He is not named specifically but there is strong evidence to support the idea that Luke was indeed the author. The book is mainly written in a historical narrative genre, and includes his experience and observance of Jesus’ life. The date that the book of Luke was written is difficult to pin down for sure. It is believed that it was written around AD60, due mainly to the belief that acts was written after Luke (Hindson, 2013, p. 374). The main theme of Luke is that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sins. As previously mentioned in the previous chapter regarding the life of Moses, sometime around 1446BC, he goes to discuss with the Pharaoh the release of the Israelites from slavery. The Pharaoh refuses to release the Israelites, consquently, God releases ten plagues onto Egypt to force the Pharaoh to let the Israelites leave Egypt. The ten plagues consisted of water into blood, frogs, lice, swarm of flies, diseased livestock, men and animals will break out with boils, thunderstorm of hail and fire, locusts, three days of darkness and death of all first-born son and daughters. The Pharaoh finally consents to the Israelites leaving Egypt allowing Moses to organize the Israelites and begin their 40 year journey back to Canaan, but the Pharaoh commands a group of his soldiers to chase after and kill all of the Israelites. Moses sees the approaching Egyptian army and with Gods assistance parts the Red Sea, leads the Israelites through the divided water, then after the Israelites are safe from
God in Exodus and in the end of Genesis is proven to adhere to his word. His promise to Abraham was that if the covenant is obeyed, Abraham’s descendants will outnumber the stars and will have the land of Canaan. In order to obey the covenant, God has to free the Israelites from the rule of the Pharaoh. God sends Moses and Aaron to convince the Pharaoh that they are messengers from God and to release the Israelites at once. The Pharaoh does not believe them, so He enacts the ten plagues on the people of Egypt, with his final plague killing the firstborn of every household.
The Ancient Egyptians thrived on the Nile river, the river which kept their civilization alive. The Nile is one of the only major rivers in the world to flow from the south to the north. The river begins in two places, the Blue Nile, which begins in the highlands of Ethiopia, and the White Nile, which begins in Lake Victoria, Kenya. Then, these rivers flow into Egypt, where its land floods from the Nile. Therefore, the Egyptian land next to the Nile was known as the Black Land, the life.
Roberts then jumps to Moses, whom God appeared to in a burning bush. God tells Moses to go to Pharaoh and tell him to release God’s people, the Israelites, who Pharaoh had enslaved. Moses obeyed, and the Lord was with him. God places ten plagues on Egypt to prove the Pharaoh that it was truly God who was demanding the release of His people. Only by God’s merciful act of salvation, the Israelites are set free and have been made God’s special people.
Egypt, positioned thirty miles on the east and west side of the Nile River, was rich in natural resources. Surrounding Egypt were miles of desert and low elevated land. The Nile had cataracts which made it very challenging for people to cross and enter into Egypt. In addition to the cataracts, the deserts surrounding Egypt separated it from neighboring civilization. Both of these factors protected the Egyptians from invasions.
In The Ten Commandments, the Middle East, represented as Egypt, is depicted as literally ancient, because the story takes place in roughly 1300 to 1200 B.C.E. It is a dusty dry desert inhabited by Hebrews and Egyptians, as well as camels and it is portrayed through stereotypical shots of the pyramids, sphinxes, and other Egyptian monuments, many of which were still being constructed, thus dating Egypt as ancient. The fact that slavery was still prevalent in Egypt also presented the region as archaic and backwards. It is also presented as a place of false religion and mysticism.
How the Egyptians Suffered: Bible as in Literature The Egyptians showed up in many parts of the Bible, including The Plagues, The Passover, and The Parting of the Red Sea. The Egyptians were punished in multiple ways and multiple times for not worshipping God, or worshipping multiple Gods at a time. The Egyptians punishment was suffering, and that included the Ten Plagues, where the Nile River was turned into blood, the Passover where all the male babies were killed if there wasn't any protection on the house, and the Parting of the Red Sea where all the Egyptians were drowned. The Egyptians suffered from not following the first Commandment out of the Ten Commandments, which is where you cannot have any Gods before God.
The Nile River is one of the most well-known and iconic rivers on Earth. Empires and many nations were built near the Nile because of the many benefits the Nile provided. The Ancient Egyptian empire lasted from about 3100 BCE to 30 BCE and many cities and farms were built around the Nile at the time. The Nile is located in Eastern Egypt, south of the Mediterranean Sea and is about 4,258 miles long.
