Book Review:
The Education of Little Tree
This story is about how a boy is raised by Cherokee grandparents in late nineteen twenties, during the Great Depression. This boy, called Little Tree by his grandparents, begins to live with his Cherokee grandmother and Scottish-Cherokee grandfather due to his parents’ death when he is five years old. This boy is actually the author, Forrest Carter (1925 - 19779), and the story is categorized as the autobiographical novel based on his own experience.
The Appalachian mountains of Tennessee, where Little Tree and grandparents live, is located further away from the settlement, and they keep the Cherokee Indian lifestyle although they accept some of the white people’s life style. Grandpa makes scottish whiskey and sells it secretly because of the alcohol prohibition during this time. They grow corn for whiskey and some for them to eat, plant beans, peas, and potatoes, gather acorns and nuts, pick berries, fish catfish and bass, hunt animals for food and clothes, and believe in the Indian’s way of thinking. The reason of why The Education of Little Tree is assigned to read for this class is that we should know each family and culture are unique and important for children’s development. As a teacher, we should know that each child comes from different family and background, and it might be very different from ours, however, we should not judge and treat children unfairly due to the cultural differences. This book reminds us that there are families and cultures whose beliefs are different from other majority of people in this country, but these cultures need to be respected by us and be treated same as other majority beliefs. In this story, the unique and minor culture would be the Indian’s and the majority one would be the white settlers’ belief,
The book explains vividly the slaughtering tragedy where the American and the Indians are killing each other without mercy. In this book, the author gives a clear thesis of the events that happen. He develops the story well from the point where the families from Arkansas move through the Utah territory during the Utah War conflict. They arrive at Salt Lake City and eventually stopping to rest at mountain meadows where they are attacked by the militia leaders.
Rykhus 3 The Moccasin Trail I read the book ” The Moccasin Trail”, this book is mostly about a man named Jim Heath. Jim is a man who shortly after leaving his family behind to go be himself was severely attacked by a grizzly bear. Shortly after the attack a group of Crow Indians found Jim who was half alive and took him to their Tribe and took care of him until he was better. A father’s influence on his son affects the boy the man will someday become. In the novel, The Light in the Forest, writer Conrad Richter tells the story of True Son, a white boy kidnapped and raised as a Native American for eleven years then returned to his white family, as he searches for his place in the world. True Son’s three fathers, Cuyloga, Harry Butler, and The Sun, greatly impact True Son’s identity. Each influencing True Son directly and indirectly during his course of hardships and new experiences. To begin, Cuyloga, a respected and beloved Native American chief, influences True Son’s personality and beliefs for eleven formative years.
The narrative offers an account which can be used to describe the particularly puritan society based on the ideals of Christianity and the European culture. It offers a female perspective of the Native Americans who showed no respect to the other religious groups. The narrator makes serious observation about her captors noting the cultural differences as well as expectations from one another in the society. However, prejudice is evident throughout the text which makes the narratives unreliable in their details besides being written after the event had already happened which means that the narrator had was free to alter the events to create an account that favored her. Nonetheless, the narrative remains factually and historically useful in providing the insights into the tactics used by the Native Americans
The perpetuation of the Lakota people reveals the American religious experiences through the stratification of social inequality through the eyes of Lame Deer. Lame Deer provides a personal narrative that landscapes native religion through social injustice inflicted on the Sioux nation. His stories provide a personal interpretation of what it is to be Native American or Indian living in the white man's world. Lame Deer Seeker of Visions, provides the context of religion from the journey of the Medicine Man. Being Indian embodies myth, ritual, and symbolism of religious tradition as a way of cultural and individual identity.
In Sherman Alexie’s short stories (and poems), there usually three central themes that the story rotates. In this paper, I will be exploring how he (Alexie) explores the themes losing culture, a cycle of regret, and using drugs (mainly alcohol) to escape. In Indian Education, the short story, Alexie seems to show that whenever young Victor tries to express himself through his culture, he is punished. Take the section “First Grade” for example. In first grade, Junior (the main character and narrator) says that “The little warrior in me roared to life that day..” and makes comparisons to traditional Native American warriors, such as describing the brusies on the other boy’s face as “war paint” or how Junior chants “it’s a good day to die”, which is phrase typically associated with Crazy Horse, who was a Native American chief.
In Thomas King 's autobiographical novel, The Truth About Stories takes a narrative approach in telling the story of the Native American, as well as Thomas King 's. The stories within the book root from the obstacles that the Thomas King had to face during his years in high school and his post-university life. These stories are told in a matter that uses rhetorical devices such as personal anecdotes & comparisons. "You 'll Never Believe What Happened" Is Always a Great Way to Start is about the importance, potential, and dangers of stories, specifically those of creation stories and how they can shape a culture, with the aim to share King 's urgency for social change with his readers King 's informal tone, lighthearted jokes, and effort to make his writing follow the style of native oral tradition as closely as possible, all help the reader understand the type of narrative he believes would be most beneficial for the foundation of a society. His unique style allows for the use of personal anecdotes and requires that he breaks the proverbial fourth wall to communicate with the reader directly, to create the conversational feel of the oral tradition.
In his book the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie portrays a teenage boy, Arnold Spirit (junior) living in white man’s world, and he must struggle to overcome racism and stereotypes if he must achieve his dreams. In the book, Junior faces a myriad of misfortunes at his former school in ‘the rez’ (reservation), which occurs as he struggles to escape from racial and stereotypical expectations about Indians. For Junior he must weigh between accepting what is expected of him as an Indian or fight against those forces and proof his peers and teachers wrong. Therefore, from the time Junior is in school at reservation up to the time he decides to attend a neighboring school in Rearden, we see a teenager who is facing tough consequences for attempting to go against the racial stereotypes.
On the calm set day of November 1,1730, everything for the Cherokee tribe seemed ordinary and the least bit unusual. History is what we learn in school about the past, about people’s culture, their way of life, their beliefs, their fight and their dreams. However, history is not an absolute truth. In fact, every story has more than one version. The History of the native American in the United States still one of the most controversial subjects in history, not only because of all the ambiguity filled in the story, but also and more importantly because the it was written by only one side. Indeed, it was written by the winners, the invaders, and the dominants.
Indians are not worth a lot socially and to the people. According to Wesley's father, he simply " held them in low regard"(34). He could treat the Indians like treating another human, with generosity, kindness, and respect. Although he didn’t change his thoughts of the Indians, "they were ignorant, lazy, superstition and irresponsible"(34). Racism took part in this story.
The book I chose to read this quarter is “Woods Runner” by Gary Paulsen. I will be analyzing the thoughts and actions of Samuel Smith, a 13 year old boy whose parents were taken by the British and Iroquois. Samuel Smith’s actions, reactions, and reasoning for his actions and thoughts throughout the story are fueled by fear of loss. Samuel is with either just himself, or Annie and Coop throughout most of the book. This is because his parents were taken by the British and the Iroquois indians.
In the final account with Anne Wampy William Apess uses “quotes” from her to show that even Native Americans late in age can become devoted Christians. Throughout The Experience of Five Christian Indians William Apess uses intellectual and rhetorical sovereignty as well as characterization to show that Native Americans are people who can think for themselves and represent themselves anyway they see fit. “The Experience of Anne Wampy” was the last entry in William Apess’ The Experience of Five Christian Indians and I argue that it was the most compelling argument of the five throughout the work. “The Experience of Anne Wampy” is very different from the other four accounts in the book, instead of being converted at a very early age or relatively early age like the other four, Anne Wampy was not converted until she was seventy years old. Also, instead of changing her English to a better written form Apess decided to leave it as is, this
“Schoolteacher’s nephew represents a dismissal by whites of the dehumanizing qualities of slavery”. When Sethe is raped, schoolteacher observed how her body is exploited. The scars on Sethe’s back are so many that they resemble the trunk of a tree with its branches. Sethe bear scars on her back because she was whipped due to her try of escape. Amy Denver, a white girl that helped Sethe when she was running away from Sweet Home, calls the tree a chokecherry tree.
