The life of J. R. R. Tolkien
J. R. R. Tolkien was a very interesting man. By looking at the Hobbit, one can see that J. R. R. Tolkien Included these themes World War II, heroism, race, and ancient epic literature which is important because he lived these themes as he lived his life as a boy to a man and loved what he did. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa to Mabel and Arthur Tolkien. Tolkien’s father died when he was only 4 years old but that didn’t stop Tolkien (www.bio.com). His mother took quite an initiative in Tolkien’s Development. After a few years Mabel died of diabetes mellitus type 1. After her death he attended King Edward’s School and formed a secret

The Hobbit and lord of the rings were an attempt to construct a body of myth. Their success caught him off guard. He spent years rejecting, criticizing and shredding adaptations of his work that he didn’t believe captured its epic scope and noble purpose. He was also utterly skeptical of most LOTR fans. He thought these people didn’t appreciate his writings and work (mentalfloss.com). He retired in 1973 and started his career in 1959. During this time, he received his greatest fame. He became so famous he and his wife had to move to the upper-class (collegecrunch.com). In Tolkien’s the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins lives a quiet, peace life in his comfortable hole at Bag End. Bilbo is a hobbit which is small people with furry feet. He lives near the busting village of Hobbiton. When Gandalf arrived everything changed for Bilbo. He was sent on a quest with thirteen dwarves to get there treasure back. Bilbo’s role in this quest is the burglar. Shortly after the group set out three hungry trolls capture all of them. Gandalf tricks the trolls to stay outside so the sun turned them in to stone. Gandalf and the lord Thorin take magic swords while Bilbo takes his own …show more content…
They find shelter in a cave during a snowstorm. A group of goblins in the cave capture them as prisoners. Gandalf saves them and leads the dwarves to a passage out of the mountain and they accidentally leave Bilbo behind. Wandering the tunnels Bilbo finds a ring and decided to take it. He then encounters Gollum who lives in a pool in the caverns. Gollum wants to eat Bilbo but Bilbo said they should have a contest of riddles. Bilbo wins of course and Gollum disappears to fetch his magic ring which turns the wearer to invisible. Bilbo uses the ring to escape from Gollum. Bilbo and the dwarves final are back together and are chased by evil wolves known as Wargs. Bilbo and his comrades are helped to safety by one of the landers from lake wood. The company enters the dark forest of mirkwood, and making matters worse, Gandalf abandons them to see to some other urgent business. After slaying spiders, Bilbo names his sword sting. After they escape from the spiders they are captured again by wood elves. Bilbo uses his ring to help the company escape from the
The first character I want to talk about is Mr. Bilbo Baggins because in my view he is the character that went thorough the most change in compare to any other character that we read about so far. Mr. Bilbo Baggins is the main character/hero in the book and we can analyze and critique his journey from “Joseph Campbell: Hero with a Thousand Faces, 1949.” In the beginning of the book, Mr. Bilbo Baggins is living in Bag End, a hobbit community, like every other hobbit he is comfortable and content. He loves his food, his pipe, and his snug little hole. This here, Bag End, is the ordinary world and this where Mr. Bilbo Baggins lives in, but there is more to Mr. Bilbo Baggins than what meets the eye.
After defeating the orcs, winning the war and burying Thorin, he has successfully became a hero or a herolike person in the special world during the times that he was with the dwarves, which is the road back in the heroic journey. When Bilbo finally was preparing to go back to his lovely hobbit hole, the dwarves were so sad and unwilling to leave Bilbo back to the peaceful land of his. When Bailbo finally gets back the hobbiton, the other hobbits was so shock that he is still alive, because he was not there for over a year, so the other hobbits assumed that he’s
Take them away to dark holes full of snakes, and never let them see the light again!” (Tolkien 64). The fight led to several goblins including the Great Goblin to their deaths. Everyone managed to escape except Bilbo, who falls and blacks out while getting a piggyback ride from
They run Into the Goblins while making their way to the Dwarves kingdom. The Goblins cause havoc when they enter the mountains, they chase Bilbo and the Dwarves the group gets separated and that's how Bilbo initially meets Gollum. The great goblin is always chasing them he says in a song "Bones will be shattered, necks will be wrung! You'll be beaten and battered, from racks you'll be hung! You will die down here and never be found, down in the deep of Goblin Town!"
Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and Winkler believe after the hero’s departure, they are faced with a trial or many trails to overcome when they finally meet their biggest enemy, “The hero undergoes a series of trials often on a perilous journey.” (Campbell) Bilbo’s first trial is after Bilbo escapes from Gollum which he is reunited with the dwarves and are surrounded by Wargs but after it seems all hope is lost, eagles swoop down and save the adventures before it is too late. In Mirkwood, the dwarves and Bilbo are starving when they get captured by spiders, and Bilbo has to save them, “Bilbo saw that the moment had come when he must do something. ”(Tolkien 64) Bilbo escapes by himself and then finds the dwarves trapped and defenseless against a mob of spiders which Bilbo has to defeat by calling them names, and angering them until Bilbo has unraveled the dwarves.
Bilbo feels perplexed, but treats them like guests anyway. When Bilbo could not take it anymore, and asked why they are here, Gandalf replied that they need a burglar to help the dwarves to reclaim their land. Bilbo disagreed at first,
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole… it was a hobbit-hole, and that meant comfort.” ( Tolkien 3) The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien, takes place in many locations amongst Middle Earth. Our main character is a creature called Bilbo Baggins, he is a stranger in the group of 13 Dwarves.
Bilbo is confronted by Gollum in the goblin caves. Bilbo wielded a dagger which he “thrusted [it] infront of him” (Tolkien 34). Gollum lacked weapons giving Bilbo the greater advantage but because Bilbo sympathized with Gollum, he decided to spare Gollum’s life and negotiating peace with the enemy rather than engaging in violence. Rather than killing Gollum, Bilbo embraces the irregular heroic quality of empathy. Bilbo develops a sense of affinity for the dwarves and their quest after seeing their “fierce and jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves'' (Tolkien 8), which drives his aspirations to aid them rather than seeking glory for himself.
Tolkien, is about a hobbit (A small mythical creature with very large feet) who goes on an unexpected journey with Thorin Oakenshield, a wizard (Gandalf), and 12 dwarves (Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Oin, Gloin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur) excluding Thorin. This novel was written in third person limited, meaning that the narrator is telling the story only being able to see the thoughts of one character. Throughout the novel they are constantly being pressured and must push on no matter what. Bilbo Baggins (the hobbit) goes on this journey with Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the lost kingdom of the dwarves, or the Kingdom Under the Mountain, the mountain itself is named the Lonely Mountain. The band of dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf travel there to reclaim their lost treasure because there is a whole spew of wealth guarded by a greedy dragon, Smaug.
Bilbo escapes being captured by killing the spider that was attacking him. Bilbo kills the spider with a sword and says, “I will give you a name, and I shall call you Sting” (154). With Sting and his ring, Bilbo sets off to save his friends. Bilbo slips on his ring when he became close to the spiders. He decides to try and lure them away from where they had the dwarves hanging from a tree branch.
The company faces many challenges while Gandalf aids them. Eventually, Bilbo becomes forced to take charge and lead the company to the mountain. The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
Throughout the journey, the dwarves and Bilbo were assisted by elves and men, who both sought compensation for their aid. When Thorin refuses to pay any compensation, Bilbo assumes responsibility and escapes in order to negotiate with the elves and men. At first, Thorin chastises Bilbo for his actions, but soon forgives him. “There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure.
