Summary Of The Hobbit

The novel, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien takes place in Tolkien’s entirely fictional world of Middle-earth. Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit that lives in his hobbit hole at Bag End, and is content with life just staying at home eating and smoking tobacco. One day his comfort is shattered when he is visited by Gandalf, a wizard of many tales, who convinces him to go on an adventure with thirteen dwarves to reclaim their treasure from Smaug the Magnificient. Smaug is a dragon who destroyed the kingdom of the King under the Mountain and his people and stole their treasure. Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thrain II and grandson of Thror who was the King under the Mountain aims to retrieve this treasure back with the help of twelve other dwarves and Bilbo as

In the mountains, the group takes shelter from a storm in a cave. All except Gandalf are ambushed by goblins who take them captive to their underground cavern. The wizard, Gandalf rescues them and leads them out the mountain, but accidently leaves Bilbo behind.

It is then that Bilbo discovers the magic ring which can render him practically invisible. He is able to beat the Gollum who lives in the cavern in a contest of riddles by asking “What have I got in my pocket?” and uses the power of the ring to not be eaten by Gollum and escape the cavern. He is reunited with the dwarves and Gandalf. They are pursued by evil wolves called Wargs but are saved by a group of eagles and Beorn, a creature who can change his shape from man to bear.

It is here that Gandalf leaves their company so he may tend to other business. They begin their travel through the forest of Mirkwood, but are ambushed in their sleep by giant spiders but Bilbo manages to help them all escape with the use of the magic ring. Shortly after escape the unlucky dwarves are captured by elves and taken as prisoners to their stronghold. Bilbo steals a golden cup, to prove to Thorin his treasure is there. This makes Smaug very angry, and in his rage, plans to burn down the Lake Town. But Bard, an experienced archer, with knowledge of Smaug’s weak spot, pierces Smaug’s heart with an arrow - killing Smaug. However Smaug destroys Lake Town.

In search of compensation for their aid and losses, the humans of Lake Town and elves march to the Lonely Mountain for a share in the treasure but are denied by Thorin and they end up besieging the Front Gate. Bilbo attempts to make peace by joining the humans but fails. At this moment, an army of goblins and Wargs storm the mountain, and this forces the humans, elves and dwarves to join together to defeat a common enemy. They almost lose, but the arrival of Beorn and the eagles secures the win.

After the battle, all peace between the different parties is restored and Bilbo and Gandalf return to Bag End, where Bilbo continues to live today. He is no longer recognized by the respectable hobbit community because of his adventure.
