Year after year, many young people around the world enter college with a particular degree in mind they would like to pursue. Attending college is one of the first major life transitions of many young adults. Many students who start college never complete his or her studies. By its very nature college work can be very challenging and it can be hard to keep up with academic demand but, by choosing a program that builds on your strengths, managing your time wisely and setting academic goals a successful college completion is destined.
Harris (2014) noted, “You will be more successful in college (and in your future occupation) when you focus on what you love to do and what you do best” (p.87). Year after year many students enter college with

In the same sense the issue at hand is really time management. Time management requires doing the right thing at the right time. In the text The (Office) Hours Pinder argued “I mean, he spent all that time on an assignment he had been given over a month ago, and assignment due several classes before” (p.52). Pinder’s reference to a student demonstrated poor time management. Some students wait until the night before a project is due to start it, making careless mistakes; in particular students tend to misuse time cramming before a test, trying to cover weeks’ worth of material in a few hours. Another poor sign of time management is lack of proper rest, which can result in loss of concentration during lectures. Exhaustion is the cause of some students falling asleep while studying. As Harris (2014) observed “a significant amount of students who are unsuccessful in college have spent too much time ‘having fun’ and too little time in their actual studies” (p.108). Many students think that they can get by without studying, choosing to party instead. When out partying students, can easily lose track of time, even worse, not wake up until late until late the next morning, and perhaps miss class. The after effect of drinking and hangovers can take a heavy toll on students. It makes it impossible to focus with a headache and sensitivity to light and sound. Once you commit to your personal values the next step is to set goals based on your values and plan how to reach them. Santrock and Halonen (2006) noted that “students who do not set goals and plan usually don’t excel in college” (p.14). Setting challenging goals enables many to commit to improving themselves by driving them to excel. A goal is nothing without the determination to achieve it. For successful college completion it might be helpful to set a goal of your completion date. By setting goals you take control of your life and time. Stating clearly what is to be achieved provides direction to students and makes it easier to see improvement. In order to stay motivated you must constantly reset goals even after achieving them. Creating new challenges and setting attaining goals help to keep students interested in what they are doing and
Students enroll in college every year confused on how to go about the whole college thing. They’re not sure what major to choose, what classes they should take, and how to get their money’s worth. Mark Edmundson’s article “Who are You and What are you doing here” is an article meant for incoming freshmen college students who still haven’t figured out who they are yet and what they want to do. Throughout his article Edmundson is questioning what college is all about. He persuades us that college is about fulfilling yourself.
The infamous answer to the question, “What is your primary goal for going to school?” is “to further my education, get a job, and be successful” such a cliché if I must say myself. My goal attending school is to make my family happy, as well as myself. In high school, I did not apply myself like I should have done because I was not sure if college was in my favor. Also, being the child of a single parent wanting to attend college seemed impossible, especially far from home.
There are many students in high school who have started to think about college; if it’s essential for them. Most parents encourage their children to apply. Nowadays education is very valuable to the point that it will help a student get a job in the future. A job that is well paid and provides a good living for that person. Many controversies have been set high whether college is worth it or that it is not for everyone.
Throughout the essay, Charles Murray stresses the idea that college is the wonderland of finding oneself and to find the career that one would want to follow for the rest of their lives. “College is seen as the open sesame to a good job and a desirable way for adolescents to transition to adulthood. Neither reason is as persuasive as it first appears.” Murray, C (2008) Practically spoken, this is not normally the case. College is a fair amount of work, much more work than one would normally acquire through any course of a high school or secondary school setting.
The most beneficial thing in life is to study something that interests you. When students are choosing what college to further their studies they consider: the cost, the social status of the school, and the programs the college carries. Professor Mark Edmunson gives his message on what students should consider in his article "Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?", published on August 22nd 2011 in Issue 74 in The Oxford American. This essay is about Edmundson's viewpoint on education and that it is hard to get one. But if you do something you enjoy doing and work hard at it you will become successful.
College is one of the most significant times in a person’s life. Every year high school kids will visit many different colleges so that they can be confident in their college decision. Some kids will follow in their parent’s foot steps and base their decision on where their mom or dad went, though, not all kids are fortunate to have help from their parents. Many kids nowadays may be the first in their family to take on higher education. The article, “First Generation College Students: Unprepared and Behind” by Liz Riggs explains that kids who are the first in their family to take on college are at a disadvantage compared to kids with parents who attended college.
Today more and more people are going to college. Most people go to college to build their knowledge and to study a specific field that they want to get a job in some day. College is marketed to most people as a creative place where they will learn everything they need to know to get a job and enter the “real world”. As college students right now, don’t get us wrong we do learn many things but, we have found that in many classes we take, we just focus on getting a good grade or a passing grade. At the end of the semester we walk out of some class barely learning a thing because we retain information just long enough to do good on a test or exam and then forget it all together when the class is done.
Students can also set short-term goals and long-term goals for themselves, it can be an academic, sporty, social wise. By completing their short-term goals, they can achieve the long-term goals in their
The college path is only one way to achieve certain goals among a host of
Choosing a college major is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. The effect choosing a college major has on one’s life is much like a small ripple in the middle of a vast ocean. In the students senior year it is a simple seemingly inconsequential click of a button on an online application. But by the time this once meek ripple reaches the shore of the students’ life it has already transformed into a great tidal wave that has influenced their life every step of the way.
I have always been interested in so many things. Growing up I had so many extra-curricular activities and hobbies that I often became overwhelmed with the thought that I had to follow one, true ‘passion’. I loved cooking, math, writing, dance, acting, science. It didn’t seem fair to devote myself entirely to one thing, and it’s probably why I struggled greatly when it came time to choose my college and my major.
The goal of reminder is to take the initiative to get involved in all activities in learning. Similarly, learning without the educational goals and monitoring your own progress never motivates you and may lose interest in learning. By setting a personal educational goal, it allows you to focus on learning and develop new areas of talent and interest as well. • Is self-motivated to learn and understand; not only driven by grades or external praise. I was motivated to get higher grades only rather than finding an interest in learning.
Students face various challenges throughout their college career. Thus, the problems that students have can range from balance, new lifestyle, to financial problems. Therefore, finding a balance between being a student, possibly working, and keeping up with their social life is a necessity. Similarly, others are away from home for the first time thus, they have a new responsibility with being on their own and findings ways to deal with homesickness. Likewise, being exposed to new financial situations is yet another challenge college students will need to learn how to cope with.
From time to time, refer to your plan to remind yourself of your aims and to fire your motivation. Written goals will make you feel more serious about and connected to your aims and it will also free you from having to work out every day what your goals are. This will save you time which you can then use on fulfilling your self-improvement
Everyone should set goals for themselves because they motivate people, they can increase the likelihood of success, and they allow people to feel better about themselves. My three goals that I am focusing on are about faith, academics and ballet. These three goals will help me improve a big part of my life. Goals help people into believing that they can do something important in their life. Don’t ignore your goals, make them happen.
