What were the main causes of the US Civil War? There are many reasons cause the US Civil War. Such as economic, society and politics, I’m inclined to think they all promote the US Civil War break out. Slavery is often considered the "cause without which" the Civil War would not have been fought. However the primary issue of the war was "states rights vs. the federal government." The Confederate states felt the federal government was too controlling and that the state should be able to act more independently (like legalizing slavery when the federal government out-lawed it). This is why they declared that they were ceceding from the union. This caused the federal government to reject their claim of independence and supress it with force. Slavery WAS an issue, but it was more about free states vs. slave states. Lincoln was firmly opposed to slavery in new states. The South wanted the new states to be slave states, otherwise the South would lose power in Congress and would be solidly outnumbered by the representatives of the free states. There are top Five Causes of the Civil War: 1. Economic and social differences between the North and the South. 2. States versus federal rights. 3. The fight between Slave and Non-Slave State Proponents. 4. Growth of the Abolition Movement. 5. The election of Abraham Lincoln. The way I look at it the first cause is very important!
