The ability to look beyond the horizon of the unfamiliar is a quality people strive for every day. Whether it’s spending time with a significant other, hanging out with friends, or anything else, movies are one of the most versatile forms of entertainment that can satisfy everyone’s unique preferences. Amongst movies, the most popular genres include comedy, action, dramas, and countless more. In 1957, Mike Nichols released The Graduate, a romantic comedy that would remain popular even fifty years after its release. Although the movie is renowned for its engaging plot and distinctive comedic elements, The Graduate tells a story about college graduate Benjamin Braddock’s affair with Mrs. Robinson, a close family friend and the prevalent theme of discovering one’s identity.
Students enroll in college every year confused on how to go about the whole college thing. They’re not sure what major to choose, what classes they should take, and how to get their money’s worth. Mark Edmundson’s article “Who are You and What are you doing here” is an article meant for incoming freshmen college students who still haven’t figured out who they are yet and what they want to do. Can people be fully mature? Many teeangers and adults think they are mature and can control many things. Here are two literary works that show how people are not fully mature as they thought. A short story “Crystal Stars Have Begun to Shine” by Martha Brooks and a poem “12 years old” by Kim Stockwood deal with the maturity of people.
First, Talbot uses diction to connect with the audience emotionally as well as to create imagery to draw in the reader into her argument. To connect with her reader emotionally, Talbot says it is “obvious” who the best students in class are and “ambitious” ones are “numerous and determined” (225). Talbot uses diction to set the tone that her argument is not serious since the title for valedictorian may actually be just a title. Using word choice that suggests students are amazing and ‘ambitious’, Talbot flatters her audience of students and indicates that the American education system is creating many profound students. Targeting her educational audience, Talbot infers the unimportance of the valedictorian title with flattery, and, in return, she connects with the students, teachers, and Board members to defuse the argument between each other.
Loneliness is an experience most individuals have, whether they live in crowded cities or on empty farms. The feeling of loneliness makes individuals desperate for a connection and forces them to make extreme decisions. In “The Painted Door”, by Sinclair Ross, the author suggests that the conflict between temptation and loneliness leads to tragedy. Sinclair Ross expresses this idea through different techniques, including symbolism, to show the effects loneliness and temptation have on the transformation of the protagonist, Ann. Ann goes through an internal struggle where she must fight the temptations caused by loneliness in order to rescue her marriage.
Liberal arts teach students how to adapt to the constant change seen in their surroundings. This idea correlates with the broad-based knowledge learned from the liberal arts. In this society, students are constantly struggling with stress. The students in this generation have more anxiety, and higher stress levels than previous generations. Alexandra Robbins, the author of “The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids,” developed student’s stress as the theme throughout the book to put emphasis on how the rigor levels of schools increased causing students to overachieve. Yet while overachieving school goals, it led to student’s stress trying to juggle school and life at the same time while trying to get into a prestigious university. Julie, the school’s superstar who does it all, undergoes under the same stress everyone has.

The motif of loneliness is explored throughout John Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice and Men, not only through the main characters, but the secondary characters as well. Of Mice and Men has many examples of discrimination. Some of the best examples are racism and sexism, which is why two of the characters are shown to be lonely. Crooks, the stable hand, is black, which makes all the others on the ranch want to have nothing to do with him. Similarly, Candy is outed since he is an old cripple.
