Thomas Hobbes was born on 5 April 1588 in Wiltshire, England. Hobbes’s mother is little known, and his father, also called Thomas Hobbes, was a somewhat disreputable local clergyman. Hobbes left Malmesbury in 1602 or 1603, in order to study at Magdalen Hall, Oxford. After receiving his degree at Oxford he became the tutor for William Cavendish. For almost all of Hobbes adult life he worked for the aristocratic Cavendish family. According to Tom Sorell, the Professor of Politics and Philosophy at Warwick University, “Hobbes served the family and their associates as translator, traveling companion, keeper of accounts, business representative, political adviser, and scientific collaborator”(Sorell).
