“are dreaming men haunted men” this statement is valid because most men that are dreaming are dreaming of unrealistic things or goals this results in them being haunted because this unrealistic thing or goal is replaying in their minds constantly, though this thing or goal can be realistic and this dream can be strived for by most people. Two works of literature that support this quote is of Mice & Men by john steinbeck and Hamlet by William shakespeare. The authors use of imagery and setting supports the interpretation of the quote. “are dreaming men haunted men” This quote embodies the lives of the characters in Of Mice & Men substantially, how come ? Because at the surface of the water

Two literary elements that support this quote is conflict and imagery. “She was very pretty and simple and her face was sweet and young. Now her rouged cheeks and her reddened lips made her seem alive and sleeping lightly, the curls, tiny little sausages, were spread on the hay behind her head and her lips were parted” This miniscule but powerful excerpt depicts how George and Lennie's tables turned abruptly, now that Lennie has killed Curley's wife their american dream is over in an instant. This part is the work of conflict and proves the interpretation of the quote. Steinbeck also provides details that allow the reader to see the surroundings, for instance Steinbeck states “the bunkhouse was a long, rectangular building, Inside the walls were whitewashed and the nails were unpainted… over each bunk there was nailed an apple box with the opening forward so that it made two shelves for personal belongings” These itty bitty …show more content…
“ I could a tale unfold whose lightest sword would harrow up thy soul” stated by the ghost of King Hamlet he is saying he cannot reveal the unjust that has happened to him for that it would make a person go mad, he is referring to how his brother killed him for power and the heir. It ties in with the literary element of conflict, and it is Hamlets conflict of finding a way to get revenge. Imagery is a very strong literary device that can be used to expose many different important aspects of the play. It also helps the reader or the audience, to get an image of what is going on and to give them a better understanding and more insight.Shakespeare uses two important parts from the beginning of the play to the middle, to show imagery, this imagery uses poison to describe death. One of the examples is from act one, scene five, when the king is talking to his son, Hamlet, The King is trying to explain to Hamlet that he did not die the way the country thinks he did, but in a different way. The King says, “A serpent stung me, so the whole ear of Denmark, Is by a forged process of my death.” What the king is saying is that the serpent, being looked upon as a snake, is not the one who stung him, but is a person who is treacherous. He also claims that all of Denmark does not know the truth behind
Of Mice and Men was an excellent novel about two migrant workers traveling in Southern California, trying to make enough money to fulfill their dream of attaining their own plot of land. They have trouble accomplishing this goal when Lennie, the big and clueless on of the two, consistently makes mistakes, some of them being vital. The author, John Steinbeck, uses great techniques and literary devices that build up to the climax and resolution. Throughout the story, he describes how several characters all have/had dreams or goals, but none of them truly achieved those dreams. All of these literary devices, techniques, and the entire plot lead up to my thesis statement.
How does Steinbeck present ‘places’ in the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’? In the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ Steinbeck creates his settings within California; a favoured location for many Americans in the ‘Great Depression’. It was supposed to be a destination full of wealth, work and hope – a place where hard work leads to personal dreams. Instead, it was packed with social misery and exclusion and depression, especially for the migrant workers.
No one had suspected the ending of the story and some were surprised by the death of Lennie. Some were even shocked by the person who killed Lennie, George. The novel Of Mice and Men has many tragic and heart-breaking events. The worst one had to be at the very end, the death of Lennie Small. The one and only George Milton killed Lennie with a bullet right through the back of his neck.
There are many themes throughout the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. One of those themes is the American dream. The American Dream has been I thought in everybody’s mind since America was founded and Steinbeck shows each individual dreams of the characters and how they can be achieved. Some characters dreams are naive and unrealistic, others are achievable. Steinbeck’s themes shows that the dreams in the book that are realistic come true, but the ones that aren’t don’t.
“There are no purely bad people in it. Conversely, there are no purely good people in it either. All the characters are complex mixtures of good and bad, or rather of bad results from good intentions. They are all—in their ability and in their outlook--limited. And they live in a gross and dirty world.”
John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men highlights the adventures of two best friends that stimulate modern issues such as white males dominating the world. There are many themes in the book, but one that is the most eye catching is the theme of people with differences being ostracized by society. This theme of society ostracizing different people is shown through Lennie’s disability, and Crooks’ color of skin. Lennie is a large migrant worker who is childish due to his mental disability. His best friend George, who acts like his second hand, helps him through everything in life.
We have read two books this year: ´Of mice and men´ and ´The curious incident of the dog in the night-time’. The books differ a lot, however they also share some similarities. ´ Of mice and men´ is about two men, named Lennie and George, who live in the time of the Great depression. They are looking for a job, but this isn’t easy because Lennie is mentally disabled so George needs to look after him the whole time.
The American Dream The American dream is the desire of all most all the characters in the novella Of Mice and Men. This is shown in many ways in many kinds of dreams whether it be becoming Rich and famous or just having the means to survive on their own each character has their own American dream. The first example of the american dream would be George 's dream. George wanted nothing more than to own his own farm and survive off of the land with Lennie which is shown in this quote “we’ll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we’ll just say the hell with goin’ to work, and we’ll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an’ listen to the rain comin’ down on the roof ...”
The novella ‘of Mice and Men’ was written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s. It is set in a difficult period of time when America was sunk in deep depression. However, themes of loyalty shine brightly throughout the novella. He shows that even though Americas economy is in tatters, loyalty can still be as prominent. There were also distinct themes of disloyalty, mainly between characters.
The book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck and directed by Gary Sinise has very similar themes to the movie. In both George, and Lennie are working towards the American Dream. George tells Lennie stories about a farm with cow, pigs, and chickens. In the movie he said almost the exact same thing: "We're gonna have a cow, and some pigs, and we're gonna have, maybe, maybe, a chicken. " This is their "dream" that they hope their work will eventually pay off in.
1.(setting) The definition of setting is the surrounding of where an event takes place. The novel is set during the Great Depression of the 1930s in two different places. It starts beside a stream, close to the Salinas River, a few miles south of Soledad, California (pg.1). That is where they first introduce George and Lennie. It then moves to a ranch that isolated and quiet.
While reading John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, I noticed numerous similarities to Of Mice and Men. The first one being the strong emphasis on the importance of family. In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie were basically family, seeing as how George never failed to protect Lennie, even when Lennie got into trouble. For instance, when Lennie caused a commotion in Weed, George stuck by him, helping him escape. In The Pearl, Kino struggles to provide for Juana and Coyotito.
“Hopes and dreams help people survive, even if they never become real” Well, this quote can be used to describe what the two protagonists in “Of Mice and Men” written by John Steinbeck did to survive in the world. This quote is significant to the characters in the novel, because Lennie Small and George Milton, both wanted to own a Ranch, hoping that they would own one some day, is what kept them motivated to work. On the other hand Curley's wife also had a dream, to become an actress, and become well-known in Hollywood.
The importance of dreams in Of Mice and Men is to give the character purpose and hope. The novel takes place in the 1930’s during the Great Depression, and life was hard because of the tough economic conditions at this time. Dreams play an important role in the novel Of Mice and Men, because the characters need an escape from the loneliness and poverty that is their reality, and it gives them something to work towards. The characters use the idea of the American Dream to feed their desire to have a better life. The characters face many obstacles along their journey, and each obstacle will have a direct affect on shaping how the character develops as well as if they reach their dream.
Of Mice And Men John Steinbeck’s novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ published in the 1930’s employs carefully considered narrative techniques that effectively inject sympathy within the reader. The chain of events are foreshadowed through speech, Death and Lennie Small. Curlys Wife soon becomes the instrument who destroys the dream. Steinbeck demonstrates this through various techniques including of foreshadowing, realism, symbolism, circular structure, significance of the title and setting.
