Clifton Jean Baptiste Date: October 26, 2017 Class: CRJ 425 Professor: In the documentary that we watched Darryl Hunt was a man of many things but not murder. He was a man that was miss identified and claimed he was innocent of murdering and raping Deborah Sykes. Even though he said he was innocent throughout the trial and the retrials he was still convicted of being a rapist and a murder. His life was turned around for 19 years. Life for this man was hard because there was so little that he can battle, there was a lot of mistakes in his trial. He should have never been wrongfully convicted for these crimes, the evidence was circumstantial at best in my opinion. There was not a shred of evidence that can really lead to them saying that it was Darryl hunt. He was trying to make a life with a wonderful woman that loved him who also knew he was wrongfully accused. A convicted witness was being paid to say that it was Darryl hunt that killed Deborah Sykes. From having a prostitute that had a large drug addiction and wanted to get out of being in a mental place. I think that emotion and false testimony was a big part of this guilty verdict. Having mostly white jurors did not help too. I think that the jury mostly looked at his background and what the prosecution was feeding to them and the emotional effect it had on the victim’s mother. A trial should not be consisting of having to hear that the mother wants justice and that she thinks it is really Darrell hunt to the fact that another black man said he saw Darryl Hunt committing the crime and then try to say that he did not know who Darryl Hunt was. It was shocking to hear that evidence was just someone saying I saw this person committing the crime instead of having actual proof and DNA to back all of that up. I also think that there was no type of actual detective work done by the detective on the
Everyone makes mistakes, they know what they did wrong and they learn from is. In any situation being on trial for your life is hard enough. When your on trial for your life and being charged with murder and not even know what you did wrong is even worse. Steve Harmon, a 16-year-old film student, is on trial for felony murder.
Those weren’t his only brushes with the law. It turned out the he was a prime suspect when the first bodies found and was brought in for questioning. In 1985, he was accused him of grabbing from behind and putting her in a choke-hold. While as far back as 1982 and 1983, a witness saw one of the victims, Marie M. Malvar, get into his car.
The trouble, in this case, was that the jurors didn’t know whether or not to charge him with 2nd-degree murder. As the victim was hit he, then hit his head on the concrete causing him a chance to still be alive. Days later they reported him in Lafayette hospital dead. Once Chad had died they found David Nelson in Florida in his hometown as they sent him back to Louisiana where he had done the crime according to( ). Another source claims that Mr.Nelson is going to prison for 30 years.
OJ Simpson OJ Simpson is a former National Football League running back, a actor, broadcaster and even a advertising spokesman, but those weren’t all of the things the former running back was. OJ Simpson was involved in a armed robbery, arrested for kidnapping, charged on multiple cases of assault and was also accused of committing the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. There was a huge shock when OJ Simpson was not found guilty of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. The reasons as to why OJ Simpson was not found guilty were the police and detectives not following proper procedures which led to evidence being tampered with. There was also accusations that the detective in charge who was present at all of the crime scenes was racist towards OJ Simpson and involved in changing and tampering with the evidence which made it seem like the defendant, OJ Simpson was guilty.
A white couple in Oregon had been accused of intentionally killing a young black man because he is black out side a store. Many people are charged for acts they believe were innocent , but others can plead guilty for all the wrong reasons. Johnny Cade was walking through the park on the East side of town with 14 year old, Ponyboy Curtis. As they were walking, Robert Sheldon of the Social gang, had threatened the two young men due to too much alcohol. The two boys were looking for a way to get out of this situation, but the Socials had already surrounded them along with threatening the two. Curtis was beginning to drown when Randy (another member of the Socials) was ordered to by Sheldon.
I believe that the prosecution built their case knowing that James Earl Ray had escaped from prison and they knew he hated black people. Then finding out later that he had obtained an illegal passport and other items, the prints on the rifle, plus statements given by witnesses. The clothes, the binoculars and the receipt that was left behind at the hotel, then later, the white Mustang that was abandoned in Georgia was enough evidence against Ray.
Finally, Wayne Williams took the stand and testified, which resulted in very unfavorable attention from the jury (The Atlanta, n.d.). His angry and combative demeanor on the witness stand left jury members with little sympathy (The Atlanta, n.d.). It only took the jury approximately ten hours to deliberate and reach a guilty verdict, however, if the fiber evidence was not presented I do not believe the deliberation would have been so quick and most likely would have resulted in a not guilty
Stepping in ten minutes before the trial was scheduled to start, an immense air of intimidation enveloped around me. This was my first time in a courtroom (let alone a Supreme Court), and it really moved me in an interesting way. Walking right up to the front row, I joined my classmates and clumsily removed my notepad and pen to jot down personal anecdotes during the trial. Surely enough, the judges showed up at 9:01 AM and once we paid our respects and the trial was underway. To my understanding, Terry Ellerbee was condemned to a death sentence for first degree murder in the trial courts and this was his appeal.
The Scootsboro trials were trails the happened in Scottsboro, Alabama. Nine black boys got into a fight on the train with the white boys and when they got off of the train two white women got off after them and yelled rape. The nine boys were not even on the same cart as those two women, so that means they couldn’t have raped those women. There wasn’t any evidence that they raped the women either. One of the women who yelled rape confessed that they did not even get raped and that they were just trying to save themselves from getting in trouble because they were prostitutes and they weren’t supposed to cross the border, but they did so they decided to yell rape to try and get them in trouble.
The media can be aggravating, they are constantly in someone’s business. But sometimes the media can have a positive impact on situations. In the cases of Greg Kelley and Walter McMillian the media actually had a positive impact on the results. The cases were very similar, botched investigations, little to no evidence, falsely accused, and a rally of support. When these cases were looking bleak the media stepped in and boosted the cases to the public.
He was the only person that was involved in the murders and his victims were not named on any website that I could find. Outcome He plead guilty to all the
After three days of Jackson on trial, the jury has decided that the defendant, Mr. Andrew Jackson was not guilty of crimes against humanity. The vote was very close though, Andrew won by a hair, with the votes being 5 versus 3. The jury found that even though the prosecution proved Jackson was a bad man, he did not commit the crimes against humanity. I decisively voted for the defendant’s side. I could’ve been the deciding factor on if Jackson is hanged or if he’s spared.
Impact of Diversity on the Criminal Justice System Dolores Jackson Williams Colorado Technical University How could the judge support his decisions? At this time I don’t feel the judge can support his decision concerning Mr. Catalano, for the following reasons. According to ORC§2929.11(A) states that a defendant must be sentenced in accordance with the proposed statue. It is in place to protect the public from potential future crimes, by and offender. Mr. Catalano caused physical harm to an officer of the law, which mandates he receive a mandatory prison term.
Ladies and gentleman of the jury, Jonathan Andrew Cade is not guilty of murder. Johnny Cade was just 16 when he died. A mere boy, who went through a lot in his short years of existence. Johnny lived in an abusive household, and in his family he went unnoticed and uncared for. He felt he was not really part of his family- an outcast.
