By 1774, the year leading up to the Revolutionary War, trouble was brewing in the American colonies. England’s congress had passed new laws on the colonists in America. One law they had passed was the sugar act in 1764, and then the following year the passed the stamp act, and a lot more laws. The colonists did not like the act, Great Britain had been passing all these laws because of Why did the colonists break away from English rule? the French and Indian war which ended in 1763 as seen in the following picture. (William S. Price) Most of the colonists did not want to become an independent country. They supported Britain’s laws, they even supported them after the wars they started. Others did not care and was just happy the be free. after the French and Indian War British government tried to reassert their government to have more control over the colonists. The colonists thought that they had more control over themselves. And when Britain started placing more and more taxes and laws it made the colonists really mad, it made them feel like they were being trampled on. They tried political means to get the government to let them be more autonomous. When what they had tried to do and it did not work so they decided to break away Britain rather than continuing to try to get more autonomy from the British system. This was not without opposition from many British loyalists that wanted to remain loyal to the crown. There were only about a third of the people in the country that were willing to fight for the freedom they had been wanting for so long.
