Christopher Columbus Hero or Villain ? Christopher Columbus is a Villain. On some accounts he can be a Hero. But on many other accounts he's a vicious Villain. Yes he discovered America ; Yes we have a holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. But here are some reasons to why he's a evil man. Christopher Columbus mutilated and enslaved native people that he encountered on the Island soon to be called America. He encountered many different Natives when he Started to explore the new land he discovered. There were 60,000 people living on this island. Some of the Natives didn't even have weapons or even heard of that word before. So it was very easy for Christopher Columbus to take advantage …show more content…
Instead of finding the Indies he finds the “New World” and creates a settlement of his own and starts to do terrible things. This can be taken as Christopher Columbus being greedy and self righteous than being an explorer for Spain. Christopher Columbus should be considered as a pirate instead of an explorer. Christopher is more of a pirate than explorer is that he became the ruler of the new land he found and was very unfair to the natives and his people. Furthermore, Christopher Columbus was a very greedy man that only wanted to be rich and famous. He later got arrested for his greed and immorality and taken back to Spain. Christopher Columbus day is insulting to many American Indians and many native-born Americans. Many Americans oppose Christopher Columbus day. Columbus’ expeditions set in motion the worldwide transfer of people, plants, animals, diseases, and cultures that greatly affected nearly every society on the planet. The Exchange also brought new diseases to both hemispheres, though the effects were greatest in the Americas. Smallpox from the Old World wiped out millions of the Native American population to mere fractions of their original
The Natives were killed by the European diseases, and after enduring this they were then forced into European law through the Economedia system. Without his discovery, this may have been avoided or handled in a more careful way. Also, Christopher Columbus had many accounts of rape, as well as murder. He wasn’t the only man committing either of these atrocities, but his fame brings these faults
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a recognition of a national holiday. Columbus is not worthy of a national holiday because he threatened and killed people. For example he claimed the indians land as his own. Also he murdered the indians and forced them into hard labor. Also to test how sharp his swords were he cut pieces of of the indians.
Columbus never really discovered America, in 1492, the Native Americans
I believe Christopher Columbus is a villain. I think he is a villain, because he forced the Native Americans out of their homelands while bringing other pilgrims and diseases back with him. Columbus discovered the Americas by accident, but he wasn't the first one to discovered it. Although, he took all of the credit which, was very greedy of him. King Ferdinand and Queen Elizabeth funded Christopher Columbus’ voyages only because Columbus promised them land, riches, and spices.
Many people heard of Christopher Columbus, mainly because we celebrate his holiday the second Monday of October every year, but is he the man we praise for finding the “New World” we believe he is? Many people debate if the national holiday is even appropriate to celebrate. Mostly, because how cruel and harsh he behaved, but many people don't know this side of this story. Students get taught about Columbus foundings and voyages but very rarely on how he treated the Natives or what he did to be able to be known as being the first man to find the Americas. Columbus treated people horribly and should not be rewarded for his horrible behavior.
Even though many people believe that christopher columbus was a hero I have found in my opinion that I believe he was a villain. I believe this because in the 4th document in the article about Christopher Columbus it was said that many people and indians were killed after his arrival and before his arrival there were many more people there than after his arrival. The people were killed from war, slavery and working in mines for Columbus. One other reason that I believe he was a villain is because if I was those people who were ruled by Columbus I would have stood up for not just me but everyone who was being mistreated by Columbus.
Despite the fact that it is over 500 years after Christopher Columbus came to the Americas in 1492, there is still a major debate about whether he should be celebrated or condemned, according to Bryan Brown from Upfront Magazine. Columbus was the explorer who brought the Europeans to the Americas, which overall impacted world history in severe measures. Columbus was the explorer who started interaction between the Americas and Europe, also known as the Columbian Exchange. When Columbus arrived, he traded with the Native Americans, but also did many things to benefit the Europeans that harmed and killed the Natives. Furthermore, unlike what many people think, Columbus wasn’t even the first European to discover the Americas; the Vikings came hundreds of years earlier.
Columbus day Columbus day is a day that we think of Christopher Columbus for “finding” america. Yet he really did not find america the native Americans did not Columbus. Columbus day is really just a way to get out of school for a day. Columbus is a man that did a lot of bad things to the native Americans all for just the money. I think that we should not have Columbus day because he really did not do anything for this country except kill a lot of native Americans which was really bad.
America’s citizens are often very patriotic and love to celebrate those that have helped make their great nation, Columbus, supposedly, being one of these people. However, it is quite astonishing that Columbus Day is even celebrated as a patriotic holiday, considering all of the terrible things he did to the indigenous people of the New World. Citizens all over America express many different beliefs about the world, but the vast majority have a universal belief that murder and cruelty are wrong, so why celebrate a man who practically specialized in unnecessary, unprovoked cruelty. Many know the arrival of Europeans on American soil was terrible for the Native Americans, but few know the role Columbus himself played in the cruelty indigenous people
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. Many italian americans are proud of Christopher Columbus because of his italian background.
Fist off Christopher Columbus will be remembered as both a villain and also be remembered as a good person, so he will be remembered as both. What I will be telling you about throughout these paragraphs is that C.C. is good and bad. I think that Christopher Columbus is both good and bad because he has a lot of reasons on why he is bad and a lot of reasons why he is a good guy. What do you think it is.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
Bartolome de las Casas is used by Zinn for many of the sources of the cruelty against the natives, but even Zinn admits that "his figures are exaggerations"(). However, Zinn still puts Bartolome under much less criticism than Columbus even though the priest did his share in being cruel to natives; this was most likely because he wanted to make the point that Columbus should not be so heroized. Overall, the monarchy of Europe is truly to blame for sending the greediest men with orders only to extract wealth from the New World. Whether or not America should celebrate Columbus Day is a highly debatable topic, but it should not really be celebrated or called after a relatively cruel man. Columbus just happened to be in charge of the right ship with a gamble that turned out to make him extremely successful, but he did not have anything, besides good seamanship to make him any more exciting than the average
Even worse, they beheaded children, for their own amusement. What did Columbus do? Nothing. As a leader, he never stopped his men from committing these crimes, but instead watched as the hundreds of thousands of natives committed suicide, yet, people still glorify his name. A person who can watch the murder of millions without stopping it should not have a holiday that praises his good moments and hides
