Others seek power for their own self-serving needs. Self-serving can be defines as selfish, or a need that will not help anyone other than one’s own self. Most of the literature written in England during the 18th century is romance literature. During this period of time, the emphasis on emotions was great. Many characters in literature felt realistic emotions, such as, feeling selfish, angry, jealous, and revengeful. Gawain from Le Morte d’Arthur, encourages King Arthur, his friend, to dislike Sir Lancelot, Arthur replies by saying, “Sir Gawain, I will do as you advise, although reluctantly, for Sir Launcelot’s terms are generous and he is still dear to me. I beg you make a reply to him on my behalf” (Malory, 228). Gawain needed to be the power in the …show more content…
Some people do not want power, for example, Frodo in the Lord of the Rings, but power finds them. This statement is proved when Gandalf gives the ring to Frodo and explains the power of it, and Frodo responds by saying, “but why not destroy it, as you say should have been done long ago?” (Tolkien, 34). To counter this statement, anyone can deny power if power comes to them coincidently. People do not seek power, they prefer to be weak and therefore, people do seek power because everyone needs …show more content…
All humans have the same natural rights, people should just enjoy their lives well they have time, as said in carpe diem poetry. The carpe diem poem titled To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time, by Robert Herrick, states, “Then be not coy, but use your time” (Herrick, 464). One should not sacrifice his or her happiness to achieve power, however, this statement is not valid because it is utterly a lie to say that one is satisfied being powerless or being ruled by somebody. Everyone needs power to be
Power is an important part of the world and how it runs, but those who possess it do not always see it this way. Power is an extremely abstract idea. One can find many different variations of the word when asking for a definition person to person. The dictionary simply puts it as, “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others…” which is a common theme that could be found between most people’s definitions of the word. We conceive power as a person’s ability to have others listen to him, and, most importantly agree with him.
In the story, it is evident that Gawain thinks he is the least of King Arthur’s knights although he his is nephew along with one of Camelot’s most noble knights. This character trait of Gawain being modest is most revealed when the Green Knight shows up for the first time wanting King Arthur to behead him, and Gawain states, “I am the weakest of your warriors and the feeblest of wit; loss of my life would be at least lamented” (354-355). When Gawain finishes this speech in these lines, all of the rest of the knights agree that Gawain should do it incase something goes awry.
Throughout history, power has been one of the most desirable, yet, difficult to obtain traits that a person can hold. Possessing power gives a certain advantage to the holder over all others. When a person obtains power, that person has the ability to carry out an action or has the capacity to direct or influence the behavior of others or a course of events. Power can be interpreted into many different meanings. Power can be described as mental, as in, a very intelligent person has the power to influence others and events with their thoughts and ideas, or, power could be described as something physical, as in, a person has the power to lift, move, or fight someone or something, influencing the thoughts of others by their own actions.
Arthur’s teachings and customs had made his knights serve him with honor. In the beginning of the medieval romance, Gawain has accepted the task from the Green Knight for Arthur and Camelot. Although he has blood ties with Arthur and has a high status among the knights at the Round Table, Gawain reveals that he is the weakest among Arthur’s knights. He accepts because he is devoted to Arthur and has great respect for him. Arthur
Everyone, at one point in their lives has wanted power more than anything. Those who do get it have to make the decision whether they want to use it for good or evil. Power can turn a person into something they never dreamed they would become because it starts to take over their lives and people do not know what to do with so much power. There are many examples of power in the play Macbeth and every person that got it used it in very different ways. This caused many changes in people from turning from good to evil or evil to good.
How does one acquire power? Well according to multiple sources, it really isn’t that difficult. Follow a few simple steps and you are on your way to becoming the most powerful person in the world. But why do we want power, and what makes it attractive? Why as human beings, are we so focused on ruling over others and getting what we want when we want it?
In the play Oedipus The King by Sophacles the main character, Oedipus, is a stubborn king and struggles to learn about his past and that nothing good comes out of it. As a baby, it is prophesied that he will kill his father and sleep with his mother. For this reason, Oedipus left his home when he was older and traveled over the mountains to escape the prophecy. The play starts in a town called Thebes, where a plague is threatening to destroy the city, crops, people, and cattle. Oedipus, their new king, is asked if he can help save the city since he has done it before.
Gawain showed acts of courageousness as King Arthur’s court was visited by the uninvited Green Knight and decided to complete the task which was a blow for a blow in one year’s time. Gawain used tremendous amounts of courtesy when he was the only one to volunteer out of King Arthur’s court to agree to the task given by the Green Knight. We know this because Gawain exclaims, “Such a foolish affair is unfitting for a king, so; being first to come forward,
Alexandre Dumas once said, “Hatred is blind; rage carries you away; and he who pours out vengeance runs the risk of tasing a bitter draught.” In the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex, written by Sophocles, Oedipus saves the city of Thebes from the Sphinx by solving its riddle. He becomes ruler of the kingdom, but reigns with a blind fury which ends up badly for him. Oedipus responds poorly when he is put into difficult situations and lashes out in anger. Showing that Oedipus is unfit to rule the people of Thebes and is ineffective as their leader.
It can be seen as a trend throughout history that stories reflect a society’s culture and values. One of the most memorable and inspirational civilization that made a substantial contribution to literature was Greece. Sophocles, a renowned Greek playwright, is beloved for his dramatic and action-filled plays that effectively satisfied the ancient audience. In Sophocles’ tragic play, Oedipus the King, the main character, Oedipus finds difficulty proclaiming his purpose against the fate bestowed upon him by the gods. Alongside his struggling, the values and cultural aspects of the Greeks emerge, reflecting their views on society during that time period at which the play was produced.
Over the course of a lifetime, humans experience many different types of emotions. They come about by your thoughts. Happiness, excitement and joy are caused by an increase in serotonin levels, and by thoughts of what one considers to be pleasant. Anxiousness, depression and guilt are also emotions humans experience, but they are caused by a drop in serotonin levels. Rage and anger are also among some of the most common emotions that affect humans.
Pride often leads to someone’s downfall - this idea has been developed from the playwright “Oedipus the king” through Rey’s interactive oral presentation. He discussed that Oedipus’ excessive pride over his knowledge due to solving riddles allows him to not listen to others including the respected Prophet , his dear relative Kreon - he seldom pays heed to them and decides to pursue further for searching the predecessor’s murderer . His own path opens up hidden , dark truth about his life. From the presentation it has been evident that Oedipus was not smart enough to realize that the path he set for himself, will eventually bring nothing but pain.
Several facets of the manner which Odysseus employs in his efforts to achieve his goal of reclaiming his power in Ithaca would be commended by Machiavelli. Judging the success of a prince by only considering the outcome of their actions is a theory Machiavelli poses on page 86 of The Prince. This particular passage at the top of the page explicates that it is not prudent to judge a prince on the means by which they came about their success; one is only to judge the ultimate result. Here, Machiavelli makes the argument that a prince must do whatever is necessary to secure and maintain power. This principle is prevalent in examining some of the actions of Odysseus on his journey to regaining his power.
Power does give us access and priority to what we want, however it is not under our control, it is accorded by others. Wealth is a means to an end, a means to acquire products that make us feel good. Yet, what makes us feel good and is satisfying our desires the true
Oedipus the King is one of the most ironic plays ever written.
