According to the Henslin (2014), deviance is the violation of norms, rules or expectations. In Sociology the perception that others have about the act is what makes something deviant. In June, 2015 two women engaged in a physical altercation in the aisle of a Walmart store. This altercation included the six year old son of one of the women. The incident started with a verbal disagreement between a woman driving a scooter and a Walmart employee. A second women interceded and the event escalated to a physical fight between the two women. This was all caught on video by one of the witnesses (Hurley, 2015). Social norms are predictable behaviors; women fighting, children engaging in both physical and verbal assault and people allowing such behaviors to continue are considered deviant acts in American society. …show more content…
The immediate audience consisted of men and women who were both Caucasian and people of color. At first the witnesses laughed and joked about the incident. A male witness stated, “This is an example of white-trash at its’ finest.” Eventually the witnesses started calling out to the women asking them to stop.

On 01/27/16, Lakirah told the reporter that she was whipped by her stepfather the night before and her mother before school today. According to the reporter, Mr. Bryant found a second cell phone Lakirah used to contact her biological father. The reporter stated Mr. Bryant told the child to pull her pants down and begin to beat her with a cow skin leather strap and his fist. The reporter stated Lakirah was hit in the eye with her stepfather’s fist and her left eye is swollen. Per the reporter, Lakirah tussled trying to get away from Mr. Bryant because it hurt and this is when he hit her with his fist.
For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.

For example, in 1968 a couple participated in an armed robbery of a cab driver. After being caught in New York, the police sent the girl back to California and labeled as a runaway, while the court charged the boy with armed robbery. In the past women were mostly seen as an innocent and weak person. Now, for the justice system to treat men and women equally, schools have enabled a no tolerance rule. This rule states that children who are charged with crimes that are usually fixed with psychological help were now handled in court.
On Wednesday May 13, 2014 a 6 year old kindergarten, Ian, was grabbed by his teacher. Not only was he picked up, but Ian’s mother states that there was a bruise on the back of his head. Video evidence shows the young kindergartner trapped between a wall and a furious teacher. We are not quite sure what Barb WIlliam’s motive was. Possibly the mental stress and the pressure the end of the school year, or possibly the fact that it was the middle of the week.

Deviance can be defined as behavior that violates social expectations and norms. Deviance can be something small like dressing like a hippy or in gothic clothing, or something big like robbing a bank. Each society has laws and rules to keep one from committing deviant acts. Colin Kaepernick is going against NFL policies, going against his duty as an American citizen, and finally, he is disrespecting the men and women who fought and died for this country. I believe Colin Kaepernick is being deviant when kneeling to the flag.
