One of the biggest issues today in football is brain injuries. We all know about concussions, but there is another type of injury, one that happens long term called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. CTE occours after having several traumatic brain injuries, like concussions. The life span of a person who is affected with CTE is only about fifty-one years. However they are doing extensive research on how to better football helmets to reduce brain injuries. The newest football helmet on the market is the riddell axiom. It is designed not repell what is hitting it, but to absorb it. Keeping your brain from not moving as much in your skull. They are also making rule changes to protect football players aswell. They are changing rules on kickoffs in the nfl to where you do not get a run up on kickoffs. So that there are not as many big collisions which can cause injuries. You can also get ejected out of a game for targeting in college. Targeting is when you purposely lower your head or shoulder another players helmets which is a leading cause of concussions in football. So if you threaten to eject someone for that then they will shy away from doing
CTE and Brain injuries have been a factor that leads to Mike Webster’s health deterioration. The causes of brain injury resulted from a strong impact, causing the brain to collide against the skull. With this happening, the blood vessels stretch out, damaging the cranial nerves. Football is known as a watched sport, therefore, in order to continue, one must have solutions towards the issue while not altering the game. Having safety helmets with paddings can help lessen the impact, bouncing the energy away from the head during a head-on collision.
For example, better protective head gear and rules against head butting would allow less permanent damage and head-on-head contact. These changes could make the sport much safer for players, including young children that are being put in danger by playing football. The dangers of football concealed by the NFL were detrimental to the lives of many players, young and old, and their loved ones.
“Although football helmet safety technology has drastically improved since the days of leather helmets, today's helmet safety standards may not be informed by current understanding of concussion risks... The standard also does not distinguish between helmets designed for professional, high school and younger football players, and the "one size fits all" approach may not be appropriate for younger athletes who are not as big and strong as professional players,” Says the U.S senate documents. When the rules for football have changed you can have fun watching or playing the games without people
The debate about whether kids should play tackle football focuses on whether it is safe or not, as well as the benefits. There are many benefits to football, and is safer than some sports. Minors should be able to play tackle football because the equipment is getting safer with stricter rules on tackling, they can get scholarships more easily, and they can get better coordination and teamwork.
Furthermore, the regulatory gear the players have to wear has been improved over the years. When football first started the only protection on their heads was a wool stocking cap(NFL,1). This helmet provided very little protection. Another significant factor from when football first began is that the players were not as big and strong and the games were most likely just played for fun and not for competition. Now players have helmets made of hard plastic with padding.
Youth Tackle Football Why the interest in youth football lately? Youth football has been getting a bad rep lately because of concerned parents. Parents of football players are concerned for their child’s safety while playing tackle football. Plenty of cities and towns are banning youth football, because of concussions.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive, declinatory disease of the brain found in people, often athletes, with a history of repetitive brain trauma, including symptomatic concussions as well as asymptomatic sub concussive blows to the head. CTE spreads over a period of years or decades as a result of trauma to the head. The brain of someone who suffers from CTE gradually will deteriorate and over time lose mass. Symptoms of CTE include loss of memory, impulsive or erratic behavior, impaired judgment, depression, aggression, difficulty with balance, and dementia. Mike Webster, Hall of Famer for the Pittsburg Steelers, was the first football player to be diagnosed with CTE, and died of the disease in 2002.

Youth football should be put to an end. If a young adult knows the potential consequences of the game and still chooses to play, then they at least made the decision on their own terms as opposed to an eight or nine year old child whose father signed them up for youth
Have you ever wanted to live an active and healthy life, as well as an improvement in grades? I believe youth sports will help all of those problems and many more. With more and more young people playing football, the risk of players becoming disabled is becoming greater and greater. Depression, behavior that is erratic, headaches, and Alzheimer's disease (which does lead to death) are just some of the long-term effects of football. As a result, children should not play football due to its deadly effects. Another reason is you are probably thinking, "My child is safe; they always have a helmet on when playing football." Guess again, because no particular type of helmet
After multiple players have been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), it was the NFL’s main focus to turn an eye to football helmet designs. In 2019, the NFL launched its Helmet Challenge, which would award grants to innovators who developed helmets that outperformed the current helmets on the field in protecting players from head injuries. July, 2021 the league spent months and months subjecting helmets to a variety of abuses in the lab to see how well the football helmets held up. In just the year of 2021, between the preseason and the regular season, the NFL saw 187 concussions happen. But the three winners of the Helmet Challenge are hoping to change that.

Tackling in Youth Football Should be Banned Imagine a nine year old boy who loves laughing. He is energetic, and it seems like he is always doing something. He is getting ready for the big football game later one afternoon. He has been waiting for this day for two weeks; it is finally here.
Tackle football may seem all fun and games, however, the threat of injury is out there, with athletes participating in tackle football risk 3 times the percentage of a serious injury than other sports. Even though this threat is present, tackle football itself is too much ingrained in the PSAL system and pro league, and change is not always welcomed even if there are some problems. However, the public must be educated about the dangers of tackle football so that concussion related injuries will be lowered. Recently someone in the high school that I attend, Abner Kahan, petitioned for the option of flag football to be available as an official PSAL sport for those who attend Stuyvesant.
