Baz Luhrmann’s films are known their ability to make a watcher feel as if they are part of the show. Between his use of camera angles, shots and the use of a narrator, it’s no wonder he is able to keep viewers on the edge of their seat. But how does Baz Luhrmann pull off this spectacular feat of his? This is probably explained best by referring to Baz Luhrmann’s films and how he himself has evolved as a director. This is best done by comparing two of his films, namely, Romeo and Juliette and The Great Gatsby. Although both these films have a large variety of common factors, such as the spectacular parties, the use of music and symbolism, it is how these techniques are executed that show us how he has evolved as a director. This helps to invoke the powerful feelings of death into the audience and in both Gatsby and Moulin Rouge, these scenes are followed by the writer character in the films explaining how they feel about the character’s deaths and how they cope with them. These scenes are accompanied by intense music scores to help convey the feelings of shock and trauma of how such great beings such as Satin and Gatsby are just as susceptible to death as anyone else. In the movie Nightjohn directed by Charles Burnett their were many differences than the book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen. The differences are minimal and sometimes would not even be noticed. Most movies would be very boring if they would be the same as the book. In the book all the characters are different than they are in the movie. One character is Mrs.Waller the wife of Clel Waller.

The monster Gatsby may have thought that he could escape from his sins, stealing my wife and then throwing her away like garbage, but God saw everything, and he could not run forever. His inconsiderate actions have angered our Father, who did not approve of such a manipulative man with revolting hauteur. Gatsby lived like a king in his castle, protected by his wealth, and oblivious to the consequences of his actions.

Fritz Lang’s M is a combination of a social film and a murder mystery—directed in 1931, in the midst of the Nazi movement’s takeover of German goverment, the film chronicles the public’s congregation to catch an infamous serial killer. Beckert, the child murder himself is presented to the audience several times throughout the film; he is shown to be involved with a constant internal struggle between allowing the darkest parts of his mind to overcome him and remaining sane. However, this film is, in some respects, making a statement less about murder and more about society at the time in which the film was released. More specifically, the film warns against and even mocks the competency and ability of the police to perform their jobs. There is a scene within the film involving an organization of beggars with the common goal of catching the child murderer.

The final scene uses a lot of close up shots to capture the emotions of Romeo and Juliet, we see a lot of anguish and hopelessness in Romeo’s face when he sees Juliet dead, and we see joy in her face when she first opens her eyes and sees Romeo, but that quickly morphs into shock and heartbreak when she sees him dying. The use of close up shots was very effective because it allowed the audience to really feel the emotions portrayed in the scene. A long shot was used in the inside of the church to capture all the interior details of the church. After they are both dead, an overhead shot is used to show them lying next to each other to symbolise their eternal love and peace in each other. In the Great Gatsby, we see a long panning shot of his house, and the lake to show how abandoned it looks.
Furthermore, the shot styles between the films are reflective of each other. The extreme close-ups, slow moving camera, and mis-en-scene are impactful in creating atmosphere.
