Comedian Carol Burnett said “adolescence is just one big walking pimple.” This statement possibly summarizes, in a few words, how adolescents feel about all the biological and emotional changes that occur during this developmental period. Some adolescents may go through this period and not experience any difficulties. Others may experience sexual problems, eating disorders, and substance abuse (Williams, 2012). Because of the hormonal and physical changes some adolescents may experience some type of emotional problem, such as depression. This paper offers a broad overview of an intervention and theory regarding treatment for adolescent depression. On Sunday, October 18, 2015, a workshop, aimed at inner city adolescents, was held at the University …show more content…
The male client is from a single-parent home. His mother and father divorced when he was 13 years old. The male client and the other members obviously knew each other. Each member immediately left their respective parent and approached each other and embraced. The male client and one female member began holding hands and led the other two female members to visit booths that were set-up with free college brochures, catalogs, etc. At approximately 12:50 p.m., the parents and members began to take their seats for the presentations. Puberty is the period of development in early adolescence when hormonal and bodily changes occur. Girls usually experience puberty around the age of 11 and boys around the age of 13. The visible signs of puberty during this time are sexual maturation and increases in height and weight. Physical changes in females include a widening of the hips and smaller waistlines. Pubic and underarm hair appears and menstruation occurs. Boys begin to experience a deepening of the voice. Hair begins to grow on the face, underarms, and pubic area. At about age 13, boys begin to make sperm. During early adolescence, girls are usually taller than boys. By late adolescence, boys usually experience a growth spurt and surpass girls in height. Girls are usually unhappy with their bodies and self-image. Boys are usually more satisfied with their bodies during puberty because the muscle mass increases. It is during this period that sexual exploration and experimentation occurs. A sexual identity begins to form in the context of social, physical, and cultural factors. Leading causes of death in adolescence are accidents, homicide, and
In this paper, an experiment was performed to evaluate a small portion of people in each grade level and measure the level of risk they have for becoming depressed. Showing the trends of the amount of depression symptoms shown and the different common answers that were listed when the students took the test. There is a trend between the grades and how many kids are at a higher risk of being depressed. This essay will also show the methods that were used to collect the information and the different tools/ways used to record all the information. There will also be tables and/or graphs used to represent the data that has been collected.
Human development has interesting stages due to the changes in behaviour and growth of the body. Adolescent depression is a serious development issue which faces most households, hence requires proper attention. The occurrence of adolescent depression is most common in the modern society, though the impact of the depression has not been addressed adequately and may be significant. Many behavioural problems, for example, school dropout, drug abuse, unprotected sexual activity, suicide, self- inflicted injuries are the result of depression. Regular depression screening is important in the healthcare setting since it helps the physicians treat depression and employ recovery mechanisms for the patients.
Those that have depression also have a significantly increased risk of also developing substance abuse. A group of researchers in Oregon randomly selected 1,709 high school students, ages 14 to 18, 274 of whom had already recovered from a single period of of major depression. The students completed three psychiatric interviews over the span of the next six years. By the end of the six years, nearly half of the participants experienced depression at least once. The researchers noticed that there was a larger increase in rates of substance abuse among the students that experienced depression than in those that did not (Bower).
CASE STUDY Demetrius was a 16-year-old Greek-American male who was admitted to the adolescent inpatient unit following by a car accident. With a history of major depression, school absences, and declining grades; his depression began at the onset of puberty. The car accident was caused by he was not paying attention on the road while kept looking at his nose and acne in the rearview mirror and lost control of his car on the freeway. He had no friends and preferred to stay at home with his parents.
Most adolescents are full of optimism and represent a positive force in society, an asset now and for the future as they grow and develop into adults. When supported, they can be resilient in absorbing setbacks and overcoming problems. Adolescents are at risk of early and unwanted pregnancy, of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV and AIDS, and vulnerable to the dangers of tobacco use, alcohol and other drugs. Many are exposed to violence and fear on a daily basis. Some of the pressures adolescents are under, or the choices they make, can change the course of their young lives, or even end them.
In boys, it is the time for testicular development, and in girls, it’s the onset of menarche and breast development. When a young teen experiences these dramatic physical and emotional upheavals he gets worried. He starts to question his own identity. He isolates himself and feels the burden of loneliness.
Process of an Anger Management Group According to the intern this paper will discuss and look at the elements of an Anger Management Group. The intern will look at specifically an adolescent anger management group that takes place twice a week for an hour at her agency AMIKids Dade North. The intern noticed that there is normally only one facilitator for this particular group sometimes there is a case manager who help co-facilitate the group. The intern observed that there are many people that may have been or are involved in a support group, task group, or anger management group at her agency.
Introduction: Adolescence is an important stage in human life span. Physiologic changes associated with puberty manifest themselves in often complex and bizarre ways to which girls show different reactions to this stage. And so, it is no wonder that this developmental period is also a time of high anxiety that occasionally can lead to the all-too-common teenagers to panic and suicidal tendencies. These changes contribute to and impact their future development. This study was conducted to assess the level of pubertal anxiety among early adolescent girls with a view to develop an educational booklet.
Another words, just like when you’re a young child, mommy goes in for a haircut, and her young daughter what’s to receive the same treatment while getting her hair done too. Boys are no different either, for they want the same experience and values as their brothers, fathers; and grandfathers such as following in their footsteps while becoming just like them. “According to cognitive development theory, children use cues to evaluate the behavior of others as either gender appropriate( “good”) or gender inappropriate (“bad”) (Jones, ASID, IIDA, IDEC and Phyllis Sloan Allen, 2009, pg. 114). Meaning children adapt to the changes to which they go though (adolescence), in order to be accepted by their gender stereotypes in the social world to which they exist.
Adolescence is between 12 and 20 years of age period of rapid changes in the physical, cognitive, social-emotional development passing from childhood to adulthood stage. Girls are more likely to develop physically at an earlier age as compared to boys. Girls would have puberty at ages between 10 to 13 years old and take 2 years to fully develop. Boys would have puberty at the ages between 12 to 15 years old and similarly take 2 years to fully develop. At this stage also secondary sexual characteristics begin to develop for boys and girls.
Whereas girls have almost the opposite effect since puberty increases weight and body fat (all normal changes) that bring them farther away from the cultural
Every single body part changes during puberty. There are three transformation of puberty- the growth spurt sexual differentiation and brain maturation. For girls, puberty begins with growth of the nipples and initial pubic hair, peak growth spurt, widening of the hips, the first menstrual period (menarche), final pubic-hair pattern, and full breast development. (407) For boys, first sign of puberty is growth of the testes, initial
The nature of a human being gradually developed at this stage. This stage can be divided into two parts. One part is reflected to adolescents and another is the stage of puberty. This is the period when a human being is transformed towards adulthood from the childhood phase. Puberty is the age when an individual attains sexual maturation.
However, nutrition was proved to affect timing of puberty and the onset of puberty tends to start earlier than before (Kaplowitz, et al., 2001). Furthermore, the length of adolescence is defined by biologically maturation or socially taking obligation roles (Schlegel, 2009). Owens (2002) clarified the length of adolescence into three phrases: early adolescence, middle adolescence and late adolescence. Early adolescence is the first phrase from the age of 10 to 13, which is usually called puberty (Owens, 2002). Middle adolescence is the second period between the ages of 14 and 16, which is related to identity issue (Owens, 2002).
Puberty is described as a state of bodily changes and social changes. For instance, “breast development and menstruation in girls; voice changes in boys; increase in height, weight, and muscle mass; and sebaceous skin changes” (Mendle 2). Oftentimes it’s looked as purely physical development as opposed to both social and cognitive development. The importance of fully understanding this aspect of adolescent development is that it is “one of the most important transitions of the human life span” according to Jane Mendle’s “Beyond Pubertal Timing” article. This period of “dramatic physical and emotional changes” (Mendle 1) helps us understand why such a process is emphasized and how it “requires adequate attention to multiple domains of developmental
