Social media, one of the great tool for sharing information, are used for various purposes in health like educational and promotional activities, communication of research findings and crisis readiness communication. In addition, online conference and webinar for health purpose, e-procurement of health commodities and telemedicine are some domains where we use social media. Social media is a new phenomenon that did not exist 20 years ago. The idea of connecting with people through the computer has evolved quickly from nonexistence to a part many people’s daily lives. The use of social media has linked people from around the globe. People are able to exchange ideas living thousand of miles apart and several countries away. Healthcare professionals and organizations view social media as an avenue to facilitate patient engagement and improve the delivery of patient-centered care (Adams 293).
To begin with, social media may result in physical health problems such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes, and eye problems, some of which are leading causes of death. One serious negative effect of social media Emiratis should be concerned about is obesity, which is a major physical health problem. A study found that the more time people spend on social media the less time they spend on physical activity (Men’s Fitness, n.d) . This was a research that was conducted by 350 college students that were surveyed about physical activity and social media (Men’s Fitness, n.d). Time is a limited resource and people should divide there time wisely.
Since 2017, there are 2.46 billion social media users. Many people use social media to follow their friends, and some people use social media to brighten others’ day. After reading one of the article,” Student examines negative effects of social media on teens” by Aurelie Krakowsky, which discusses the harmful side of social media, and talks about how it affects kids. After reading the other article“The Upside of Selfies: Social media isn’t all bad for kids”, by Kelly Wallace (CNN), which shows that social media can be beneficial to teens,and how it helps them. After reading the two articles, it has been concluded that social media can be harmful; but, there is more evidence to support that social media can be beneficial.
Social Media has had a big influence on the world since it first made an appearance. It helps open doors that people never knew were there. It can signify trends and create and conceal content, help you feel less alone and more confidence in yourself you’ve never shown before, and it can help find people in a crisis with a bi-directional flow of information. Social media is an amazing tool preferred by many because it is easy to use, it allows people to share their experiences, and in emergency situations, it can help responders communicate with the public and among themselves. With the advent and rapid development of the Internet, children and teenagers spend more time on computers and some negative effect of the Internet occurs, such as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying has become a serious problem among youth and children all over the world. With the data of 80 studies of different countries, it is estimated that the on average more than 15% of children and youth have been the victims of cyber bullying (Schultze-Krumbholz et al 148). The situation in the United States is also serious. A study among 84 adolescents in 2007 reveals that about 49% of them reported that they were cyber bullied (Stewart and Fritsch 80).
In the last twenty years, technology and social media have taken over the globe. Technology has enabled people to connect with each other; they can connect through email, text, or social networking sites. Since this phenomenon of being easily connected has occurred a significant amount of controversy has sparked. The advancement of technology has opened up a new gateway of making fun of people. To put an end to the growing epidemic of cyberbullying the society should implement the effects and seriousness the effects can have on a person. Cyberbullying can have long-term physiological effects on its victims. In order to lessen the effects of bullying; schools should have a bullying class as a required course that educates all students about the ramification of cyberbullying. Schools should enforce a bullying course at every grade level beginning with middle school into high school to educate the children on the seriousness of this epidemic.
