The sound of my shaking legs pounding in harmony with my racing heart quickly overshadowed the soothing jazz radiating throughout the dentist office. As my back reclined uncomfortably in the chair, the glaring light illuminated the nervous sweat sweeping across my face. My anxiety amplified as my eyes fluttered around the room to see shiny tools and surgical masks peering down at me. My teeth were securely locked together under my sealed lips as constant laughter and awkward stares replayed in my mind. Unlike most people, my smile was pamphlet perfect if the gaping holes beside my front teeth were photoshopped out of the picture. Failed attempts to pry open my mouth motivated my dentist to explore a different approach. He stripped away his surgical mask and his sterile demeanor to explain his own memories of living with an unorthodox smile. Hearing his comparable …show more content…
Mission of Mercy Clinic, I noticed the lively arena stripped of its personality and transformed into a colorless, sterile environment. Foam fingers and cheering crowds were replaced with mouthless faces marching to the beat of whirling tools and slushing mouths spawning an allusion of a robotic, mechanistic assembly line. These sights and sounds reemerged my phobia of dentists; moreover, in the sea of white coats, I noticed an elderly man with utter fear painted his body. When I approached him, he anxiously shifted in the chair and rapidly grasped for something secure, my hand. The dentist also acknowledged his fear and removed his external barriers to reveal a friendly, smiling face. He imitated friendly conversation with the patient to disguise the intimidating environment and to coax him into relaxation and build confidence in the procedure; consequentially, the elderly man’s tense grip slowly softened in my grasp. Again, I witnessed how a sincere, personal exchange of words can generate a sense of assurance and tranquility within the
Jimenez’ smooth chocolaty brown hair glistens under the bright white light. It is hard to hear her talk because of the baby blue surgical mask that is strapped from ear to ear covering her mouth. Once she finishes the examination, she calmly strolls back to her desk to continue her paperwork. The chatter of the young women at the desk can be heard from the waiting room. They are trying to decide which scrubs to buy as they wait for new patients to check in.
In the last paragraph the author describes the current signboard that simply says “Doctor McTeague. Dental Parlors. Gas Given.”. The use of uninterested details and simple sentences shows how average and banal the doctor’s accomplishments are. Following the description of his current sign is the description of the one he aspires to have.
Cindy walked up to me ready to start. “Doctor Robbins is going to put you under okay.” I nodded. The mask was placed over my mouth and nose I was told to breath in. I breathed in and was surrounded by white fuzz.
Working with Frankie gave me a sense of the importance of a dental hygienist at a dental clinic. There are many dentists that don 't employ dental hygienists because they do their own hygiene work. However, I feel that a dental hygienist can be a valuable asset, especially when they help build a strong relationship with the patients. This way, the dentist can deal with the other important issues that may arise that require more invasive
In those hospital visits I had become accustomed to the sights and smells of a doctor’s office that instead of reminding me of pain, comforted me. I knew from then on, that the medical field was where I was called to serve.
Some people love the dentist and other are terrified or embarrassed. Everyone has a story of why it took so long, whether it was the fear, lack of money, or ashamed of their hygiene. So, it’s important to have compassion and connect with them to make them as comfortable as possible.” One thing I did not know about this field was how much patient interaction was actually involved. Before this project I was on the border of pursuing this career.
I know that some of those transfers still haunt me. One of the patients of whom I was most fond was an attorney from a famous political family. She had severe diabetes and terrible circulation, and, at one point, she developed a painful sore on her foot. Knowing the hazards of hospitals, I did everything I could to keep her from resorting to surgery”. This quote shows that the doctor cares about their patients by doing everything they can at their will.
Shadowing was a great opportunity for me. It provides students a general overview about a certain career such as working conditions and nature of work. On the 14th of November, I shadowed Dr. Azhar Bustami, a dentist on 10043 E Adamo Dr, Tampa, FL 33619. Dr. Azhar was very welcoming and supportive. She tried her best with explaining the advantages and disadvantages of working as a dentist.

In seventeen years, I have worked in both private and public health settings. My career has exposed me to many aspects of healthcare. I have developed many technical and clinical skills over the years, learned the importance of being thorough yet gentle, and engaged in problem solving of dental-medical issues and patient care. I have worked independently, obtaining a public health license and at other times as a part of a team, providing comprehensive care to patients. My work outside of the traditional office has been the most rewarding and fulfilling: working with disabled, migrant health programs, volunteering through dental outreach programs and as an ambassador with People to People International.
Thankfully, my lengthy preparations for a dental profession were not for naught though, as last year my internal flame for professional dentistry was truly alit by a local Omaha dentist. Shadowing Dr. Beninato, was shadowing experience unlike any other that I had previously witnessed. With preconceived notions and minor experience biasing me away from general dentistry, watching Dr. Beninato manipulate equipment and materials to artfully reconstruction entire sets of teeth utilizing full arch implantation supported bridges triggered a personal epiphany. There I sat watching a master of the dental art, whose occupation as a simple general dentist, unlike the restricted path of orthodontics, had enabled him to elect out of a large array of options, and become highly specialized in fields of interest uniquely his own. Additionally, complementing the ability to specialize, I would come to realize general dentistry possessed an equally important aspect that I adore, the joy and skill of working and building with ones hands, at a level woefully unmatched by the manual dexterity required of
As I was getting my assignment for the day, I was thinking “Am I going to remember what to say, or how to perform certain skills?” But, to my surprise, I was able to jump right back in. My patient was an 84 year old male, admitted with a blocked common bile duct. I was, able to talk with him, and do his assessment with no problem.

Ever since I was young, dentistry had sparked my interest for my career. Dentistry appeals to me chiefly because I had always wanted to be involved in a profession where I can help people. My love towards human biology especially human teeth also contributes to my career choice. Most importantly, I find human teeth interesting, often fascinating. Due to my compassionate nature, I have since long known that I would want to pursue dentistry as my career because I get to form relationships with my patients, work hand in hand with many people on a face to face basis.
