In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses allusions to help the reader to understand the setting, and irony to show character and develop theme. Prejudice, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is described as the “simple hell people give other people without even thinking”, and the novel powerfully portrays examples of racial and social prejudice.

A part of a quote from chapter one states, “disturbance between the North and South”. This refers to the Civil War in 1861-1865, which gives the reader an estimated time period of which the book took place in, also relating to the segregation. The full quote says, "Simon would have regarded with impotent fury the disturbance between the North and the South, as it left his descendants stripped of everything but their land…” (Pg. 4) This allusion helps you understand why Maycomb treats the black people the way they do. During the civil war, the North wanted to abolish slavery while the South, which the story takes place in, doesn 't want to treat the black people like people, after having them as slaves for so long. She uses people like the Cunninghams, Ewells, Aunt Alexandra and Tom Robinson to develop her argument. One event that shows that prejudice can affect people's decisions, is when Miss Caroline, the school teacher tried to give a quarter to Walter Cunningham because he didn’t have a lunch. “Went to her desk and opened her purse. “Here’s a quarter” she said to Walter.

During the where the story was set there were inequality issues and very prejudice opinions. Intertwined in the book she addresses the controversial topics like race and different forms of prejudice. There were several different forms of prejudice in this book.
Taking certain words from the quote such as, “My folks”, implies that racism is being taught generation after generation. The quote shows a direct link to the prejudice most of Maycomb's community has towards people of color. Cecil Jacobs furthermore states how white people discriminated against black people during the 1930’s. Bob Ewell, a witness in the testimony, and the father of Mayella Ewell, is a very racist person. In one instance, Bob describes Tom Robinson as a black, nigger, raping his Mayella.
When many children are young, they do things that aren’t right because they don’t know better. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a Southern Gothic novel by Harper Lee, a young, naive girl Scout Finch has many misconceptions about others. Because of her immature ways, she learns many lessons throughout the first five chapters that alter her perception of others. To begin, Scout receives a lesson from Calpurnia. When Walter Cunningham joins the Finch family for supper, Scout mocks him for pouring syrup all over his food; as a consequence, Calpurnia speaks to her privately and reminds her that she should not be “remark[ing] on [a guest’s] ways” as if she is superior (Lee, 33).

Scout admits she feels fine and Atticus asks her what is wrong. She tells him that her teacher, Miss Caroline, says that they cannot read together anymore because she is too advanced for her age. Atticus responds with, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it,”(Lee 39). Though Scout does not fully understand the concept of this lesson, it slowly comes to her as the book advances. She is able to make many connections using what Atticus taught her, and she truly understands the meaning of standing in another person’s shoes.

In the heated wrap up of the trial between the Ewells and Tom Robinson Trial, Atticus used the allusion to Rockefeller when saying “-there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein..."(210).
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses characterization, symbolism, and irony to express the cloud in judgment prejudice causes when examining the morals of others. Scout is able to understand more about the town folk in Maycomb County through studying her teacher’s ironic and corrupted views of life around her. Lee uses Miss Gates, Scout’s teacher, to allow Scout a chance to understand the complexity of the adult world. While teaching the class about the Holocaust, Gates expresses the injustice being done to the Jews. She teaches the children that the town does not “believe in persecuting anybody” (Lee 329) because of the U.S. democratic government.
I can tell To Kill A Mockingbird takes place during the 1930’s because of the allusions made in it. In the book, they also use words that we do not normally use in our average daily vocabulary; Some examples would be on page 36 when they use words such as “fer”, “reckon”, and “ain’t”. Back in the twentieth century, they used multiple words that we do not use as much nowadays. Furthermore, I can tell the book takes place during the 1930’s is because of an allusion made on page 46 when Jem refers to Indian-heads. Indian-heads were pennies before the Lincoln penny came about.
Allusions Music is very important in the world and not only can it be listened to for enjoyment, but also created by one as a hobby. Mockingbirds make beautiful music to listen to and a Jew’s harp is an instrument that one can use to play songs. Harper Lee uses both of these musical components in To Kill A Mockingbird with a deeper meaning to give the reader more of an understanding to what is happening. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book mainly about the coexistence of good and evil. The book stresses and emphasizes on the exploration of moral nature in humans. There are many themes in this novel including courage, innocence, racism, femininity, etc. However the most prevalent theme in the book is innocence. Not just innocence in itself but the danger and harm evil poses to the innocent.
She didn 't fully understand what was going on therefore can 't comprehend the miscarriages of justice. As she can 't fully compose adult commentary, the novel was shown in innocence. One advantage of reading this novel from Scout 's point of view is when she experiences something for the first time, so does the reader. Such as when she goes to Cal 's church and experiences the bitterness some black members have towards white members in
