“Oh! I’m so glad to be home!” Unlike Andrew and his dad, in the story “Fly Away Home,” by Eve Bunting. A kid named, Andrew and his dad have to live in the airport. Andrew has a very hard life because one, he has no home. Two, he has no friends. Finally, he doesn’t have an education. One reason why Andrew has a very hard life is obviously he has no home! After he lost his mom, him and his dad lost their home and have to live in the airport. For example, him and his dad can never find a home, an apartment or anything. Finally, Andrew and his dad have no money! His dad works as a janitor on the weekends, Andrew saves his money and does not waste it. Yet, they still have no money, the rent for apartments are too high like they stated in
Andrew Clarke is the athletic one in the group. He wrestles because this is what his dad wants, however this is not what he wants to do. Andrews’s dad does not want him to be a ‘loser’, he does not tolerate losers in his family. Andrew is basically living for his father, and his father is living through him. After smoking pot with the group he admits his father pressured him to wrestle, this is something he doesn’t want to do, but he doesn’t say how he really feels because he doesn’t want to upset his father.
The Vietnam war was a scarring experience for many American soldiers. As a soldier they faced the jungle and its wilds. Many fell to victim to guerilla tactics implemented by the vietcong. These soldiers were both poorly equipped and trained for a fight in the jungles of Vietnam. Hugh realizes that even if the people of the higher class are given the knowledge that he and some other lower class people have the potential to have a way better life, they do not care enough to assist them. They have to switch terminals and wake up and sleep in different places. Luckily, his father has a job, but he doesn’t make enough money to rent an apartment, which he is always looking to do. But Andrew has hope of getting out of there because if one small bird could find just the right time to leave, so can Andrew. Fly Away Home and Baseball Saved Us are both stories of patience and learning to find the right time to escape from a bad situation though the stories end up doing so differently.
Sherman Alexie uses indirect characterization and antihero literary devices in order to portray the differences between a father and a dad, and what a true dad should be, in the book “Flight”. This book is about a teenager named Zits who lost his parents at a young age and started traveling down a violent path. Then when he was about to commit a serious crime he started to time travel through different people’s bodies teaching him how to be more compassionate towards others. Alexie encourages the readers to be caring towards others and know that all life is sacred no matter who they are or what they’ve done. This is shown towards the end of the book when Zits thinks about what he has learned after his journey.
