Dred Scott vs. Sanford case was the biggest mistake in U.S history, hands down. It is listed as the first case of the top ten worst Supreme Court decisions. Dred scotts case was the most significant because after his, no other case had ruined the reputation of the court quite as bad. You can bet that southerners were thrilled with the outcome. There was a massive abolitionist campaign to help dred Scott and his family. Many southerners twisted it and said they were anti-southerners, making them enemies of a greater union. The dred Scott case was seen by many southern slave owners and people who supported slavery as a crucial model. Giving them some legal standing to be able to say that the supreme law had not only upheld the law of slavery, but also by basically crushing the Missouri compromise. The dred Scott case resembled an eye opener to northerners who could tolerate slavery as long as it stayed in the south. Many northerners remained quiet, but the thought of slavery protruding into the free states was too terrifying for them to ignore. Northerners who hadn’t said anything before now realized they had to before it was too late, furthering the contribution to the civil war. It was only four years after the courts decision that the civil war had started. Ultimately, as awful as the outcome was for Dred Scott and his family, good things came out of it. Dred and his family did eventually get to be free, thanks to Peter Blow. The growing support for nullification was quite obvious during the days of the Jackson Administration, as events such as the Webster-Hayne Debate, Tariff of 1832, Order of Nullification, and Worcester v. Georgia all made the tension grow between the North and the South. To understand this conflict and tension one must first know what made the North and South so different. The North was an industrial powerhouse, full of bustling cities, and all kinds of cultures and peoples, on the other hand was the South. The South was seen as unadvanced and prehistoric to the Northerners, as the South relied heavily on the growth of cotton to fuel their economy, giving them their name , “King Cotton”. The main difference between the two were their economies.

Sandford would go down in history as one of the courts most erroneous rulings. There have been many famous court trials throughout history. The Dred Scott v. Stanford Court Case of 1857, also known as the “Dred scott case”, was one of these historic court trials. This court case led to the United states supreme Court decision on the US labor law and constitutional law. It revolved around the matter of Negroes whose ancestors that were imported into the United States, and were put into slavery. The Supreme ruled that whether enslaved or free, Blacks could not be an American citizen, could not sue in federal court, and the federal government had no power to regulate slavery in the federal territories acquired.

Dred Scott Case was a decision/case that fought for his freedom. Dred Scott was born into slavery, so he didn’t really have a chance to live free. Dred Scott had two different masters, Peter Blow then John Emerson. After the death of his first master, Peter Blow, Dred Scott tried to gain his freedom from a doctor but had gotten turned down because he has African Blood line and then was sold to to his other master, John Emerson. Because he was turned down he had decided to take his case to the Supreme Court.

The Dred Scott v. Sandford case had the greatest impact on Race Relations in America because it created a legitimate definition of the citizenship. Scott, a former slave, stated that because of his occupancy in a free state, he is a free man. The other side argued that Scott was still a slave and according to the fifth amendment, no person (master) can be deprived of their property. The initial impact of the case was in favor of the slave owner but this decision was overturned by the adoption of the thirteenth and fourteenth amendment.
