Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete that was born on July 28, 1958 and lost his right leg to cancer. After seeing the lack of funding towards cancer research, Fox started the Marathon of Hope, a journey across Canada from East to West to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, he was forced to end his marathon in Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to the cancer spreading to his lungs. While in the hospital, he saw how the other patients were suffering, many of them being very young. After doing his own research, Fox concluded that there was very little money being put towards cancer research and decided to begin the Marathon of Hope to raise money (1). Canadians quickly began hearing about Fox and his run across Canada from the media, which increased the amount of awareness about the need for more cancer research and new treatments. By the time Fox entered Ontario, the whole country was cheering for him and donating to cancer research (2).
Although Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer, he did not let that stop him from achieving his goal. Fox wanted to raise one dollar from every Canadian during his marathon. His resilience mixed with his determination allowed him to achieve this goal before passing away (3). Terry Fox is known to be a hero and a great leader worldwide. Terry Fox was born on July 28th, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba but moved to Surrey, British Columbia in 1966 but ended up settling in Port Coquitlam in 1968. Fox was just an ordinary Canadian boy who loved sports like soccer, rugby, baseball and most of all, basketball. When he was in grade 8, he wanted to try out for the basketball team whilst only being 5’0 and there were many people better than him but he was still determined to join the team.
He found several ways to serve the community but these two services should be considered as the greatest ones yet. “Kyle co-launched a nonprofit group, Fitco Cares Foundation, which supplies fitness equipment to war-wounded veterans. ”(Biography.com 2) This organization provided exercise equipment and also counseling for veterans. Chris Kyle himself had to go through this process and he saw the great potential that it had and he wanted to provide that to as many other people as he could.

In my school, a girl named Shelby died fighting cancer. Our school did everything in their power to help her family, a family that had decided to raise money to help not only themselves but other families that are fighting cancer. They started selling bracelets, shirts, and other merchandise to raise money. “Fight like a girl,” this was their title. Everyone knew of Shelby and how strong she had been.

Terry begins training for his “Marathon of Hope” which was a continental race across Canada to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society on one leg, something that has never been done before by anyone. His goal was to complete the race from east coast to west coast running 20 miles a day on one leg in hopes of raising money and awareness for cancer research. The journey was not easy on his mind or body for it was a very demanding challenge. At Terry’s halfway point he began to get sicker and had intense chest pain which brought his race to a halt. Doctors discovered the cancer had taken a turn for the worse and spread to Terry’s lungs, making him unable to finish his race.
