How Healthy is the Conodoguinet Creek? Member of Enola Community: I have conducted an experiment on whether the Conodoguinet Creek is either polluted or healthy. The Conodoguinet Creek can get polluted by livestock. The livestock could possibly use the creek as a water source or as a restroom. Eutrophication, which is excessive richness of nutrients in any form of body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen, is another reason why the creek could be polluted. Fertilizers are used in farming to provide crops with nutrients, but they also play a big role in the Eutrophication process. Phosphate and nitrates are examples of polyatomic ions. Polyatomic ions, also known as molecular ions, are charged chemical species composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded or of a metal complex that can be considered to be acting to a single unit. Phosphates and nitrates are found in fertilizers and some detergents. When rain dissolves these materials make their way into the creeks and rivers. When the surface waters are rich with these materials, they can cause algae to grow, which completes with other organisms for light and other nutrients. This has been a major contributor to the massive loss of life in the Chesapeake Bay waters. The average of phosphate tests were approximately zero and one tenth ppm (parts per million.) The lower the phosphate number, the smaller amount of pollution there is in the water. The average amount of nitrate in the water was approximately zero and nine tenths. The same scenario as the phosphate, the lower the number, the smaller amount of pollution. And the last test I conducted was the dissolved oxygen. I organized four different tests; pH paper, alkalinity tests, the number of rocks neutralizing acid, and the number of rocks that don’t neutralize acid. The average for pH paper was seven. The pH is the numeric scale used to specify the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. The pH scale measures acidity and alkalinity. the pH scale goes from zero, which is an acid reading, to fourteen, which is an alkaline reading. A stream with a great abundance of life would probably have a measurement of or near seven, which is near neutral, or the measurement may be a little higher. For a stream that is not as productive, the pH measurement may be higher or lower than seven. For the alkalinity test, the average was thirteen. An alkalinity test tells you if there are limestone, which neutralizes acid. The Eureka Stockade was a rough time for everyone. It was a time for rebellion and a time for showing who the miners’ and troopers were. In Burns Bog, there is mostly peat and therefore, the soils can survive higher acidic measures.

First, the history of Devils Lake starts in prehistoric times. According to OnMilwaukee, an online news system, historians believe that during prehistoric times Devils Lake is now what it is because of glacial activity. Years ago, Devils Lake was surrounded in huge mountain ranges but through weathering and erosion has created the breathtaking bluffs and the large body of water there is today. One popular theory scientist have about Devils Lake is that years ago the Wisconsin River flowed through the gorge but the water became trapped between the glaciers. Over time the water trapped between the two glaciers became the well known lake.
False Creek is a small cove, located in the heart of Vancouver, which separates downtown from the city. It’s current salinity is around 48,000 milligrams per liter, or 37 percent higher than the Pacific Ocean which allows only for salt-tolerant fish and birds to survive (2). The Salton Basin of Imperial Valley is one of the most biologically diverse areas in California with over 400 species and subspecies found there (2). Common mammals that can be found in the Imperial Valley are raccoons, coyotes, striped skunks, desert pocket mice, Merriam 's kangaroo rats, desert cottontails, Valley pocket gophers, and Round-tailed ground squirrels.

Have you ever seen a yellow river? Golden river, not so golden after all. In Colorado there was a mine spill in the Animas River that affect many people, animals and their land. The Animas River was polluted with with toxic chemicals that have left an environmental disaster and people can get diseases, from the water, leaving people to wonder if their way of life will ever be the same. The Animas river flowed a yellow color through several states contaminating hundreds of miles of land and the biggest indian reservation in the nation.

All living organisms contain a certain amount of pH level. pH levels are that indicate whether a substance is acidic or basic. Acidic substances are substances that have pH level less 7 and basic substances are substances that have a pH level of greater than 7. Most living cell in the environment has a pH level of 7 which are considered to be a neutral environment. To maintain this neutral environment cells must buffer the pH level so they are not too acidic or basic (Edwards et al, 2011).
The tree we sampled for this experiment was a type of oak tree. In general most oaks tree pH levels should be between 3.6 and 7.0. These trees are normally best where the summers are dry and the winters are wet. As there are a wide variety of oak trees, different oak trees adapt to many different range of temperatures. Though most oak trees range from a temperature from around 45 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
