What lead the colonist to turn against their mother country that some loved so much? The mother country was England and they wanted the new world to stay with them because they were making a lot of money of the colonist. They were taxing the colonies where ever they could so they could take more money away from them and to try to keep them in check. There were many different taxations that were forced upon the colonies that made the angry with their mother country and they were the sugar act, currency act, stamp act, quartering act, declaratory act and the tea act. All of these acts were not forced upon the colonist at once. They were slowly applied over a few years to try to squeeze they dry of their money. All of these different acts drove …show more content…
This law was put into place because the colonist were buy of merchants so they did have to pay the high taxes on molasses. Which back fired on them because the British lower the tax on molasses because Lord “Grenvile took measures that the duty be strictly enforced. The act also listed more foreign good to be taxed including sugar, wine, coffee, cambric, and lumber”(U.S History). This drove the some of the colonist crazy because now they were being taxes on more things that they had to buy in order to survive in the new world. Once this law got put into place into place it slowed down the economy of the new world. Reason why is because the British were collecting more money and controlling where they could sell their product. This is when the tension between the colonist and the British …show more content…
Before this act the colonist were buying tea from smugglers because it was cheaper that way before the tea act. The tea act made it possible to sell tea at a much lower price. The British got a response that they didn’t think that they were going to get from the colonist. They refused to buy the tea because it would “acknowledge Britain’s right to tax the colonies” (Eric Foner). There were very few colonist that were buying tea from shipping company. This lead to the colonist to what become to know as the Boston Tea Party. This is when the colonist destroyed 300 chests of tea which have a valve of “4 million dollars today” (Eric Foner). This was the tipping point for the new world. It gave them a spark that would eventually leading them to rise against the British
The Molasses Act of 1733 came from the parliament of great Britain was something that taxed the citizens of the colonies 6 pence every time a gallon of molasses was shipped. This act was imposed to make trades with the french cheaper. This act vitally impacted the global mass trade. The Molasses was used to make rum in New England, this made it much more valuable than anything the colonies had to offer, may it be fish or anything else. Since they had the molasses the British west Indies were considered the most valuable trade partners out there.
The Tea Act was putting tax on tea sold by other companies other than the East India Company. A group of colonists wanted to make things change was the Sons of Liberty. Led by Samuel Adams and John Hancock. They had secret meetings and then took action
The British Parliament made the colonists angry by implementing a multitude of different taxes to help carry the financial burden that was going on in Britain and in the Colonies; in some aspects the British used the money to help the colonies, but Parliament often took the taxes too far. The first major act that that will be looked at is the Sugar Act of 1764. The reason that this first tax (act) was implemented was to regulate the smuggling of sugar and molasses into the colonies from the French and the West Indies, or any other non-British Caribbean sources, hence the name “Sugar” act. The act itself was a revamped version of the 1733 Molasses act. Basically, the act was set up to create a monopoly for the British plantations in the West
Though Parliament repealed all the Townshend Acts, it did not take away the taxes of tea, because the British officials knew that the tea was on high demand despite the boycotts occurring. Colonial merchants would smuggle tea without paying any duties and so the British East India Company offered a solution to the Parliament. The company held immense amounts of tea, but did not sell directly to the colonists for if they did the tea would cost less, and maybe if the tea was cheaper than less people would smuggle it, thus the Parliament issued a new act called the Tea act, an act that would allow the British India Company to directly sell the tea to colonists, but the Parliaments plan backfired and the merchants and smugglers feared that the
The colonist were forced to buy british goods, and that’s how and why the colonist started smuggling goods. 1764 of the sugar act britian started lowering the prices of molasses and sugar from being six-pence to three pence.
Due to the harsh treatment of the british to the colonists many of the colonists got upset and rebelled amongst many of the
However, Parliment saw a need to help out the British East India Company, who at the time had the largest surplus of tea on hand and needed help selling it. Parliment did not view this as a punishment to their fellow countrymen in America but as a way increasing revenue to help the British East India Company which in turn would have been beneficial to all involved [3]. Another reason colonists did not approve of the Tea Act is that the Townshend Revenue Act tea tax remained in place. This tax was one of the taxes that insulted the colonists. Since the new Tea Act began the sale of tea by representatives of the British East India Company directly to the American colonies, colonial merchants felt the act illegally granted a monopoly to the British East India Company.
However, in 1773, the East India Company noticed that there was an overproduction of tea and its prices surely would decline (“The Third Imperial Crisis”). Tea was one of the, if not the, most valuable asset to many members in Parliament. Britain was forced to impose a new Tea tax on the colonists, which was aimed to keep the price of tea high. Even this act was reasonable in the eyes of the British, but to the colonists, this was just a British way of assuring dominance considering it was now for profit rather than to pay off debts. The response to the Tea Acts was the Boston Tea Party of 1773 (“The Third Imperial Crisis”).
During the first years of the English settlements of North America the people who immigrated from England they formed colonies that with the support of the British government. The colonist didn 't pay a lot of taxes on their trading benefits to the government. Through the years, the King and the parliament started raising taxes on almost everything that the colonist was producing in the colonies. The colonists weren 't happy with the new taxation that the king was charging to the colonies, and it led the colonist to protest at British empire. There are several reasons why the colonists revolted against the British government.
The British government was not looking for the best of the people. They were only thinking about what they wanted; the government was not interested in what the people wanted so they decided to make decisions on their own, which resulted in changes that form the United States today. Because of this, they were justified in rebelling and declaring independence. One reason why the colonists decided to rebel and declare independence was because of taxation.
This was costly for the american colonist because the british sold their tea at a low rate however they would tax them as
The colonists were mistreated from the start the British forced them to pay their war debts basically and controlled them harshly this caused the colonists to rise up and take back power. These events eventually led to the American Revolution and colonists
and they too were attacked so they had to fire into the mob. Parliament passed the Tea Act, which gave the British East Indians company a complete monopoly of the American tea business meaning the colonists could only buy tea from this company. The colonists opposed this law even though it lowered the price of tea. They viewed the tea Act as merely another example
When the British ships arrived in the Boston Harbor The colonist wanted the tea shipped back to England with out payment of tax. Then the royal governor of England insisted on payment of tax. On December 16 a group of men know as the Sons of Liberty disguised there self as Indians and boarded the British ships and dumped all of the tea into the Boston harbor. After that happened parliament passed Coercive Acts. Theses act were put in to place to punish the colonist for dumping the British tea into the Boston harbor.
The colonies stopped giving their goods to England. They smuggled them and traded them in the Caribbean to make more money to benefit themselves. The people were going against England’s back. Because the colonies were not stopped, they believed they could do whatever they wanted. This led to major conflicts.
