In the story “To Kill a MockingBird” by Harper Lee. An enormous amount of Literary devices were used to cleverly convey the underlying meaning of what is being said. I have chosen to analyze the allusion of Rockefeller. In the heated wrap up of the trial between the Ewells and Tom Robinson Trial, Atticus used the allusion to Rockefeller when saying “-there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein..."(210).
The theme of this novel is "Not everything is the way you predict it is". I believe this thematic statement suits the story because throughout the book there are lots of surprises, and most situations don't go the way people predict they will. For example, Aunt Alexandra was first seen as mean, according to her attitude towards Scout. At the end of the book Aunt Alexandra hands Scout her overalls, as mentioned in the story, "the garments she most despised." Because she always wanted Scout to be a lady and wear dresses.
An important allusion in To Kill A Mockingbird is the phrase from The Declaration of independence, “all men are created equal. Atticus reminds the court of these basic principles when he is defending Tom Robinson. His exact word are “Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal”. The reason I think Atticus said this is to remind the people of Maycomb what Jefferson wanted to remind the people in England, that every men on Earth should be treated equally because they were all created equal. It is important that Atticus says this because it will remind the jury and everyone that everyone including Tom Robinson should be treated equal in the justice system and everywhere else.
Scout proves that adversity strengthens an individual by taking difficult events and giving them a positive outcome, resulting in her becoming a mature adolescent. From the beginning to the end of the novel, Scout blossoms from an innocent young child to a sophisticated young lady. She undergoes situations that she would not have known how to handle when she was younger. Learning to walk away from minor as well as major things has helped Scout take on the adversities she faced in a positive way. Scout demonstrates that when an individual endures hardship, it’s possible to have a constructive outcome and transition into a stronger and maturer being.
Throughout the Book To Kill A Mockingbird the author, Harper Lee explores the topic of Adversity through the eyes of many different characters which later helps shape their identity. Adversity is a thing that one encounters at least once in their life, despite it causing them hardships while completing a task they are able to gain knowledge through the experience. By using the perspectives of different characters, especially through the protagonist Scout. Lee explores how individuals overcome hardships in their life such as being judged by others based on societal perspective, as well as how guardians influence children's perspectives on the world, and lastly gender discrimination.
“What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.” - Friedrich Nietzsche. Is that true? Does adversity really change people for the better? Going through tough situations can give individuals a new kind of strength, emotional strength, which lends them a chance to grow and mature.
To Kill A Mockingbird Literary Analysis Throughout To Kill A MockingBird, by Harper Lee there are many acts of courage. This is shown in Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Boo Radley. Atticus shows the most courage in the book but all three of these characters show true courage in some way, shape, or form. Boo Radley showed a lot of courage, but he was not in the storyline as much as Atticus. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, courage is defined as standing up for people and doing what’s right.
In the book ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ written by Harper Lee, the concept of fear is presented and based on stereotypes. Maycomb County lives are mainly based upon stereotypes and fiction stories. Besides, being scared of Boo Radley was all because of what the children have heard from others about the Radley’s past and present. Furthermore fear is what we find in books because people will believe everything they see and read about.
How is the racial problem of the southern states of USA in the 1930s portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird? INTRO In the 1930s the Southern states of America suffered from a strong discrimination and racial hatred towards colored people. They had no rights, no respect and were not allowed to go places white people went. In other words they were segregated from the rest of the society.
The novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” was written in 1960 by Harper Lee in the point of view of a young innocent girl named Scout. One of the main messages that Lee has (need a new word than – indicated or set out) is racism, it plays an important role which strongly impacts many character’s lives unfairly and changes the relationship between two. Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” shows that it is wrong to hurt someone who does no harm to you, for example, black people are innocent but no way did they have as many rights as white people did. Black people lived hard lives because society was judgemental, irrational and most importantly, racist. As Scout and Jem grow older they learn to cope, take responsibility and are introduced to new aspects of life, one of which is racism.
Essay In the novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, there are many important messages shown throughout the book. However the primary focus was set on racial prejudice that existed in the 1930s-1940’s in the fictional town of Maycomb County. The racism in the novel was very much a reality in 1930s-1940s America. A very good example of the racial prejudice that existed was in the courtroom during Tom Robinson’s trial, an innocent Negro man held against his will for a crime he did not commit.
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society, she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
Using common goals, the characters in “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee and people today all take advantage of others through dishonest methods, which is why the novel is still prevalent in today’s society. Throughout time, lies and manipulation have both been used to forge the pathway for injustice and control. Used both by modern day parents and the people of Maycomb County, lies are often bred to force results. After being informed that the knothole in the tree was cemented by Nathan Radley because it was “sick and dying”, Atticus tells Jem “That tree’s as healthy as you are, Jem” (Lee 63). Upon the realization of Mr. Radley’s lie, Jem is left crying.
