Andrew Jackson had a strong negative impact on the United States during his presidency. Jackson’s first taste of power was in 1796 when he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives, which shortly led to his seat in the U.S Senate from Tennessee. When this position did not satisfy Jackson he ran for president against John Quincy Adams in 1824, which he lost. Four years later, Jackson ran once again for president except he had a successful outcome. During his presidency Jackson had four main principles, white man’s suffrage, the Spoils System, Indian Removal and Opposing the National Bank. Ironically, these principles had a large impact on why people, to this day, view Jackson as one of the worst presidents of the United States. …show more content…
He would refer to them in inhumane ways and forced them to move from their tribes just so he could benefit from their land. Jackson commented “... and perhaps cause them gradually, under the protection of the government and through the influence of good counsel, to cast off their savage habits and become an interesting, civilized, and Christian community” (Document 5). The Indians are being portrayed as aggressive animals when Jackson refers to their “savage habits.” Jackson not only made negative remarks about the Indians, but he also allowed soldiers to make the removal of Indians brutal, while knowing there was no way the Indians could defend themselves. Soldiers would not allow Indians to gather any belongings when they were picked up, not even another change of clothing. The Indians were ordered to march to Ross’s Landing no matter their conditions or age (Document 6). In addition to walking in all conditions, the soldiers held guns at the Indians while they marched. Another example of Jackson being a dictator was the creation of the Spoils System. When Jackson first became president he decided the people already in office were not the right fit. He saw some of these people, who had been
Andrew Jackson was not like other president before him. He also had different outlook from other presidents, that made him very different unique from others. Two things that were separated around that time were that he reached out to the common people to belive in him that his also like them not unlike other president before him and not approving of the Bank of United States. He was different from the other presidents because he was friendly and he connected with the common people, in the election of the 1824 he won by the peoples vote not the votes of the government. After he won the election he started the spoil system, where he removed the civil servants and replaced them with his friend and gave more people jobs.
Jackson believed the Native Americans were “barbarians” (Tindall and Shi 429). The Jacksonian Democrats stood for equality, yet they thought they were better than the Creeks, Choctaws, Cherokees, and other Indian tribes. The Indians were manipulated with bribery and alcohol (Tindall and Shi 429). This deceit lead to some tribes resisting, but these rebellions were soon quelled. Many Native Americans, especially the Cherokee, died because of the Jacksonian government’s view on different people groups and their callous and manipulative actions.
Another thing that Jackson did during his authoritarian rule he used the spoils system and replaced many of his advisers with friends. The spoils system was choosing only people you knew and putting them into governing positions. This was very bad for the nation as this would not help the nation for the better, and would hurt them more than anything. (TCI 14)3 You may have thought that Jackson being so Assertive and Authoritarian helps him to be such a great leader, but his using things such as military force and forgetting the checks and balances doesn’t help him and made him more of a tyrant than a president. For these reasons, this is another reason why Andrew Jackson was a very horrible
He thought that many people were entitled and that “spoils belong to victors”. Jackson was ignorant of people below his wealthyness. In Spoils System 2, it states that Jackson does not have a strong feeling about the public officers, and that they should be removed immediately. It says that Jackson wanted to replace the public officials with people that will gain experience. People that have never been experienced with this kind of stuff before.
Andrew Jackson, the first president from a western state, impacted American society due to his strong values, ideas, and personality. In regards to Democracy, Andrew Jackson had a huge role in transforming it. For one, Andrew Jackson had the goal of protecting the poor from the “tyranny of wealth and power”, and wanted to give other white men equal status no matter of their wealth or background (434). This had a major effect in politics since it gave more opportunities for the less wealthy to become involved. Jackson’s campaign involved turning the government into the “rule of the people”, although by people, he meant the addition of white men from lower classes (435).
Jackson enforced a Indian removal act to fund the removal of tribes. With this act, Jackson wanted the Indians moved from American territory into Indian Territory.
In keeping with the principle, Jackson tried to abolish the College Electors (those who choose the president) by Constitutional amendment.” This quote shows President Jackson’s heroism in fighting for the people to have the power to elect their president directly. Many people would disagree and say Andrew Jackson is a villain, he did do things that were frowned upon. Probably the most negative thing is the Indian Removal Act.
The founders of the United States did their best to create a government that would not allow erroneous decisions to greatly harm the nation. They set a percent of presidents being politically sound and well-known; their beliefs for how the nation should be handled were essential to their campaign. President Andrew Jackson, however, did not follow this system, instead winning primarily by his personality and popularity amongst the common American. While his actions in office often appeared to be for the people, most had a hidden selfish side to them that he easily covered up. With the election of 1828, Jackson radically changed American politics, focusing them more on public appearance and personal character than on intelligence and political views, making personality just as, if not more important than the actual politics of a political term.
Andrew Jackson presidency focused a lot on small government and pleasing the common man. He attempted to shut down national banks to make government smaller. Jackson also enforces things like the Indian Removal Policy, which strengthened the bond between Jackson and the common man. Jackson was the first and only president to make the country debt too. All of these impacted are government today very much as well as other governments around the world.
In conclusion, there is much evidence to support the idea that Andrew Jackson was a tyrant and vastly abused his power in presidency. Jackson was a cruel ruler for his actions, some including the Indian Removal Act, his overuse of vetoing, and his temper and personality. Overall he was just not right for the position of a political
Andrew Jackson was a bad president because he only cared about what he liked and disliked. He disliked the Natives not moving so he moved them by force and in the process killed many. He did not like what the National Bank represented so he destroyed it thereby sending the country into a depression. He liked putting his friends in power so he did even if they were out of touch with the common man. Ironically Andrew Jackson was known as a supporter of the common man but actually he was one of the most insensitive presidents in American
President Andrew Jackson had a strong view on the American economy. He mistrusted many policies and in his time in office drastically changed them to suit his views and ideals. After winning the 1828 election against John Quincy Adams and the 1832 election against Henry Clay, Jackson’s time in office was unquestioned. In his administration, Jackson’s economic policies led to the Panic of 1837 and transformed the American banking system. Jackson’s view on economy lead him to instate acts that significantly transformed the system of American economy such as the abolition of the second Bank of the United States.
One of the biggest thing that Jackson had done as a president was in 1832. Jackson vetoed a bill that would renew the second bank charter early. Jackson stated “I will kill it!”. He said this because he didn’t like the bank at all and he believed that it made the rich richer and the poor poorer. He said in his veto message “It is easy to conceive that great evils to our country and its institutions might flow from such a concentration of power in the hands of a few men irresponsible to the people.”
First, he was known for implementing the Spoils System, a method in which the President chooses government officials based on their support towards him. Citizens despised the Spoils System because the trusted government officials were fired, while untrustworthy men took over. One political cartoon depicts Jackson on a stand with a plaque that reads “To the victors belong the spoils.” The words describe a scenario where Jackson and his supporters get to run the government because they won the election. It was clear that citizens of America were not happy with the Spoils System, as it contributed to a flawed government.
While Andrew Jacksons presidency was mostly positive, on the contrary others believe that there were negative aspects during his time as president. Some things that his critics believe were negative was that he destroyed the United States national bank and then portrayed him as a king in political cartoons. Furthermore, they called him “King Andrew the First.” Finally, the last negative effect of Andrew Jacksons presidency was when he begun the removal of Native Americans from east of the Appalachian Mountains. First, one of the things that Andrew Jackson’s critics believed was negative was the removal of the United States national bank.
